Re: 2013 Rugby League World Cup finals
It was set up to be the biggest game of the group stage, as last year's runners-up Mercury took on the team they defeated in the semi-final, Hamland. Strong defence was to be the key, and it was evident that both teams knew that, as the first breakthrough didn't come for 25 minutes, Luke Hamilton getting his first international try. Hamland levelled shortly before half time. Mercury had an early chance in the second half, as the kickoff bounced dead, giving them a goal line drop out. Alan Clark fell over the right side of the goal line as he was tackled, putting his side back in the lead, with Cooper's successful conversion making it 12-6. They increased the lead with half an hour to go, thanks to Michael Donelly's chip kick falling into the arms of Anthony Mason who slid in for Mercury's third try. Hamland got back into the game through Davos Miller's try, but Mercury rounded off a commanding victory with two tries from Daniel Brown in the last 10 minutes.
Hamland 12-30 Mercury
Tries:
25' - Hamilton
37' - Teadoir
42' - Clark
51' - Donelly
64' - Miller
70' - Brown
77' - Brown

In the final game of the round, Taeland took on Zandarijn, with both sides looking to get their first win of the tournament. The game was littered with handling errors, and proved not to be as competitive as was hoped. The only score of the first half was an unconverted try for Adriaan Jerba. With the weather deteriorating in the second half, the roof was closed, but the rain still caused a few more errors. Zandarijn had a try ruled out by the video referee due to an earlier knock on, but soon made it 8-0 with Tom Haemmel's try in the corner. Taeland never really had any possession near the Zandt line, but a break from Fred McMahon was halted just 15 metres out. Iar Newell was frustrated to see his kick run dead in Taeland's only real period of pressure. There was just a minute and a half left on the clock when Taeland finally made it onto the scoresheet, Mik Davorsen claiming his second try of the tournament. Deiv Mys opted not to take the conversion attempt, and instead restart play, with Taeland desperate to win the game. They made it as far down field as the 20 metre line, but Mys' kick was diffused by Rutgerus Stijnen to secure victory for Zandarijn.
Taeland 4-8 Zandarijn
Tries:
19' - Jerba
55' - Haemmel
79' - Davorsen

Re: 2013 Rugby League World Cup finals
North Antartica had a scare from Safiria in their final group match, but managed to do enough to secure their place in the final four. Samuel Krow's high tackle just 7 minutes in gave referee John Mayfield no choice but to show the first red card of the competition, giving the Napians an uphill task from the start. Safiria took the lead through Terra Ifrit, but North Antarctica were able to move two points in front, with West Connely's converted try. Safiria managed to put another two unanswered scores on the board to go into half time with a 10-point lead.
The Napians found a way back into the game, with Joseph Rodriguez racing through to meet Peter Milios' kick, but the Safirians restored their advantage 11 minutes later. With the Safirians needing one more try to move ahead of North Antarctica and qualify in their place, the Napian defence held strong, forcing a crucial handling error with just two minutes left on the clock. Safiria finally had their first ever win, but it was not enough to see them into the semi-finals.

In the day's other group match, Birgeshir took on Craitland, with both sides still in with a chance of making it to the semi-finals. As was expected, the Craitish players experience showed, and with four unanswered tries in the first half, and five more in the second half, Birgeshir were sent home licking their wounds.North Antarctica 12-22 Safiria

Re: 2013 Rugby League World Cup finals
Well NAPI are still a work in progress at the minute, so a semi-final appearance is not bad at all!
As for Birgeshir, you just didn't get much chance to play, as Craitland did everything they wanted to do right.

Re: 2013 Rugby League World Cup finals
*played Sunday*
The winner of this game was to advance to the semi-finals, with both Hamland and Zandarijn sitting on two points after the second group game. Hamland took control of the game, and were 20-0 up after 20 minutes. Zandarijn pulled a score back, but Hamland ran in two more tries before the break to go in at 30-6. Tom Haemmel ran the length of the field to bring Zandarijn back within 3 converted tries. Hendryck Tebbe's effort was ruled out by the video referee for offside at the kick. Hamland's 40/20 attempt sailed out on the full, giving Zandarijn possession, 35 metres from the line, and they capitalised, with Filip Olsson going in just to the right of the posts. In the end, there was to be no comeback, as Hamland ran in three more tries before the end, to book their semi-final place.
With Mercury's place in the semi-final already sealed, and Taeland already eliminated, Mercury just needed to win to seal first place. They looked to be well on the way when Michael Donelly crashed over the line just two minutes in. Not much later, it was 12-0, with Alan Clark finding a gap in the corner. Taeland decreased the deficit thanks to Marion Ulrich's try, but Mercury answered with three confident tries. Another try each before the break made the score 36-10. Mercury opened the second half well, but it was Taeland that were first on the scoresheet thanks to Iar Newell, but just 15 minutes later, Mercury’s 20 point lead had been extended to a 42 point lead, with Lee Parkinson getting his second and third tries. By this point, the result was a forgone conclusion, but Taeland still piled on the pressure, and with 10 minutes to go, added another try to their tally, Yulrik Daars touching down in the corner, but Mercury pressed further and added another two converted tries to complete a resounding victory.
