Statement on the Geocities closure

We're well aware that Geocities and all the micronational websites thereon are soon to be lost. So thanks to Spangle mostly, the Foundation is aiming to save ALL the sites directly relating to the nation projects under our protection, those related to the Apollo Sector community, and other micronational sites that are going to be lost (in that order of priority). This is going to be achieved by ascertaining a comprehensive list of websites to be prioritised and unleashing either/both -wget and a spider Spangle's developing to download all relevant data to Spangle's servers.

To help with this process, anyone who has links to any rather obscure sites could come forward. For example, as Ryan did here.

Once all the sites are downloaded, I hope for two things to happen. Firstly, a Museum site to be maintained on Spangle's server which people can browse through and so view past times etc., just like they can now only on one site without geocities' annoying ads. Secondly, an archive file to be uploaded which I will encourage everyone to download for the sake of creating community-wide backups. That way, if Spangle's server goes down, his computer dies and my computer dies, the information won't be lost.

This is possibly the Apollo Foundation's most important mission to date, and we won't fail. Preserving history is what we're all about.

I hope Ryan hasn't forgotten http://www.geocities.com/evilsnapple/ - it would be somewhat... weird if he had :p

... oh, Magus Sylvae is Iain, not Ryan? That explains it then...

I hadn't heard about the closure, so thanks for the heads-up. Oddly they haven't bothered to inform me about this.

These are what's on my accounts, but any help downloading what you can would be good.

ok, Vilhelm gave me a priority list, now here:
http://dr-spangle.is-a-geek.com/Apollo-sites/sites.txt

and they are downloaded to
http://dr-spangle.is-a-geek.com/Apollo-sites/
you can go there and click through or paste the geocities URL on the end of that link.

e.g.
http://dr-spangle.is-a-geek.com/Apollo- ... sonian_22/

Lac Glacei seems to be missing pages - haven't checked to see if they're missing from the original site.

Does this downloading process of yours capture any of the files outside of the web pages? e.g. Several of these sites have archive subdirectories with additional mn material. Just add /archives to most of the urls.

Ryan: Yes I do need to check over the sites, there are indications that the program might have been accessing the pages too quick and therefore being told to bugger off by yahoo :P
It only finds pages via links on the pages, so if there are no links to it, it can't find them
