Re: Simplified Economic Model (SEM)
I agree with you on this point, insofar as macronational economic systems don't work on the micronational level. That said, Hamland has developed an economic system which is strictly micronational, with no modern macronational analogue (as far as I am aware), which bypasses the problem you describe by essentially placing the impetus on government to spend money, rather than on individual citizens within the country. In Hamland, and Passio-Corum, government bodies trade simulated goods and and invest in projects on behalf of the nation's citizens, users and NPC's alike. This way, the nation doesn't really need all of its citizens to be interested in the economy, so long as the government is interested. If more countries adopted similar platforms, I think, and strayed further from macronational models, we would also see a general increase in trade between nations. But as it stands, most nations still place the impetus on their citizens, who are by and large uninterested in such things.Malliki wrote:One fundamental problem is that everything works just fine even if you don't participate in the economy. It has no urgency. In real life, you have to participate in the economy, unless you want to live alone in the forest, eating squirrels and whatnot. In micronational economies, opting out carries no penalty whatsoever. We could of course mandate participation in the economy, but then people would leave for a nation that don't. Regardless, unless the entire micronational world participates, you are at a disadvantage. Another fundamental problem is that we lack goods and services to trade, and even when we do trade them, we can usually obtain the same goods and services outside the economy. This means that emulating macronational economies is doomed to fail. We need a solution for the micronational world, and during my nearly 20 years in the hobby, I have yet to see such a solution.

Yes of course, but it's not exactly the same thing.

Gentlemen,
I want to join this discussion. My name is Peter J. Ovencake, Councilor of General Affairs of the Republic of Liga.
Mr. Besich and I have been working on roleplaying for many years and working economic system was a problem all the time. The problem is that whatever you do, it has no effect at all.
Therefore I think we should not seek for a perfect economic system, but we should create a system that causes some complications, just for fun and action in our geofictional play.
That's much easier to create than a system that simulates a real economy, because that requires very complex software and we would be working on it all day long.
I think the system my collegue Besich desribed (SEM) is a simply system that doesn't require too much complex programming and no 24 hours attention.

Besides the Duke, there is no real comment been given on the SEM idea.
Just a few words about it won't work, but no to the point remarks.
I like to know why the SEM idea won't work, please read the idea and comment on it, or is a songcontest more important ? (sigh)
