Craitland vs. Mercury (02/07)
*Played 2nd July*
Sorry this is so delayed - the backdated regional matches will be done tonight too!Craitman wrote:Lining-up for the first ever international match in Interland's brand new Kern FC Stadium, both teams started with the sides they are expected to use as their first choice during EMU 2013. Midfielder Steven Rydberg and defender Paul McEwan are Mercury's most notable newcomers, with Craitland including Tiem P. Jones and Tim Isrdlvarien in their opening eleven.Spoiler!
The game was goalless for just over a minute's play before the scoreboard was changed. Craitland went full-out attack from the kick-off, aiming for redemption over their 2-1 loss to Gerenia in their previous game. Tiem P. Jones was set through down the right and took a touch before crossing to the edge of the area, where Jon-Jan Jónsen was there to control it. Running on, the BäJ man chested the ball as it fell between the Mercurian back two before striking it with a scissors action straight away to make it bounce its way past Kieran Mercury's left-hand dive and into the bottom corner. Jónsen's last-minute goal in last year's World Cup put Mercury out of the tournament on goal difference, and it seemed that he may be Mercury's kryptonite again. While Mercury fought their way back into the game over the course of the half, there were few chances to equalise. Joe Foxon had a shot saved by Oscar Senovichi from the left side of the area for the Mercurians' best effort, as Isrdlvarien's header just before the whistle going over the bar was Craitland's closest.
The two teams remained evenly matched following half time. With the Craitish defence managing to deal with Mercury's pacy attack, the Mercurian defence was equally as successful in quashing the influential Freddie Gaärsen out of the contest. Jon-Jan Jónsen had a speculative effort from range to double his tally, but curled his shot agonisingly wide ten minutes after the restart, minutes before former teammate Steven Rydberg repeated the effort down the other end, with his dipper being caught by Senovichi. In the final quarter of an hour, the teams made their only substitutes of the match; Jack Partridge replaced Joe Foxon and Yaqin Senovichi came-on for goalscorer Jónsen. Neither replacement made any notable impact, other than a Partridge offside, and the end of the game came with no injury time added by the referee.
