2017 Treesian Memorial Cup
Craitman wrote:After lengthy talks among the associations' representatives and over a month's anticipation, the inaugural edition of the Treesian Memorial Cup kicks-off today. A round robin between the three national teams representing Arboria, Craitland and Elwynn, the tournament brings together peoples of shared culture and history through the medium of Micras' favourite sport!
Today's fixture brings Elwynn to the Meiridosa Stadium to face Arboria.
For the remainder of the competition, today's hosts will travel to Craitland in two weeks' time, while the Craits visit Elwynn two weeks after that in the cup's final match-up!

Arboria 0-3 Elwynn
21' - Y. Miskjalendzki
64' - A. Frå Bakkinon
68' - Y. Miskjalendzki
Elwynn dominated the first ever Treesian Memorial Cup game with a confident display which affirmed their position as champions of Benacia. Live-wire forward Yngvi Miskjalendzki was the match's star, scoring in the first half an hour with a powerful shot from outside the box after a spell of heavy Elwynnese pressure in which multiple goals could have been scored but for better accuracy. Arboria held firm throughout half-time, but never threatened to equalise, leaving Elwynn to extend their lead as they did just after the hour. Miskjalendzki grabbed the assist to set Arvið Frå Bakkinon through on the overlap down the left to strike superbly across the 'keeper and in. Within minutes, the game was put to bed as Miskjalendzki topped a sterling performance with a second goal, heading in from Håkon hin Ældri's floated delivery unchallenged from close range. Razdjani Emiri thought he had added a fourth in the final five minutes of action, but was called back for a very narrow offside which didn't escape the linesman's sight.
Arboria were kept quiet today, but may have set their sights on upsetting a Craitand side in transition in the new year, while Elwynn's final win of 2016 puts them up to seventh in the year's rankings as they continue to show they are a force to be reckoned with of late.

Craitland 6-3 Arboria
6' - F. Gaärsen
18' - W. Zóma
37' - F. Gaärsen
44' - W. Zóma
53' - T. Fredriksen
64' - S. de Vembria
75' - J.M. Juliaĵsen
78' - T. Ula (o.g.)
90' - J. Lydveldt (o.g.)
Craitland and Arboria played-out an enthralling nine-goal thriller in the second Treesian Memorial Cup fixture, with the former's weakened team taking the spoils despite a near-collapse. The Craits, albeit with a much-changed side from their last friendly against Vyktory were notably dominant in the first half, and took a very comfortable 4-0 lead into the break. Record scorer and captain Freddie Gaärsen opened the scoring early and doubled his tally thirty minutes later, with both goals coming from a display of pace to beat the offside trap and finish neatly with his right. Either side of Gaärsen's second, Will Zóma added a brace of his own, bringing his international account to five, with a strong header and a bundled close-range strike, respectively. Craitland extended their lead further still after half-time, with Gaärsen's substitute replacement Tór Fredriksen accurately placing home from the edge of the box for his eighth goal for the national side. Arboria grabbed a consolation soon after, with a rapid move ending with Seán de Vembria converting via the upright, before Craitland restored their five-goal lead through another substitute in Jan-Morteņ Juliaĵsen, whose header from a corner looped in. The Craits' increased lead appeared to cause Arboria's second goal, as stopper Tim Ula's complacency got the better of him. A deflected pass rolled its way to the Crait's net, and Ula attempted to control the ball, but instead directed it further towards goal and was unable to clear it as it embarrassingly sneaked over the line and in. Ula was swiftly replaced, giving Sverige Tiem's Jesse Lydveldt his first cap after a good season so far but Lydveldt's day also ended with a cringe, as poor handling gave Arboria a surprise third; a weak De Vembria shot being palmed inside the post rather than calmly collected for a second own goal of the match.
A second consecutive loss for Arboria in this tournament was not unexpected, but to force three goals away at Craitland is a feat that could give them some confidence heading into this year's qualifiers. On the other hand, Craitland will worry about the defensive frailties that allowed three goals from a team that only scored seven in the entirety of 2016 with a trip to a strong Elwynn team to come ahead of a qualifying group they must win to make another World Cup finals.

Elwynn 1-1 Craitland
24' - Ĵ. Ólsen
83' - R. Emiri
Craitland won the inaugural Treesian Memorial Cup by the narrowest of margins - on goals scored - following a one-apiece draw in Elwynn. In a repeat scoreline from their last meeting; last July's Benacia Cup semi-final, in which the Elwynnese came-out on top with a shoot-out victory, the tie was enough for Craitland's slightly superior record against underdogs Arboria to be the clinching factor. While the Craits, playing a notably stronger side than a fortnight ago, were the dominant team, Elwynn's tactical nous served them well with dangerous counter-attacks coming throughout the game. Although struggling domestically since his high-profile move to Mercury in the summer, Ĵulian Ólsen gave a secured performance and opened the scoring midway through the first 45 with a rasping strike from just inside the area following an intelligent flicked assist by Will Zóma, whose confidence is growing in a national team partnership alongside record scorer and captain Freddie Gaärsen. Yngvi Miskjalendzki, as ever, was Elwynn's biggest threat, having the advantage in ærial battles with the Craits' defence, but was unable to find a way past the in-form Kraig Johansen. The second half was much like the first, albeit without a Craitish goal; Gaärsen squandering a couple of good chances with weakened shots straight to Folki Öldrikkari's grasp, however. Into the closing stages and Craitland brought Vän Vanisen on for Zóma, with Senyan-based Aidan Keĵinz also earning a second cap by replacing Gaärsen, in a move designed to shore-up defensively. The formation shift swamped the midfield but Vanisen's first involvement was to concede a clumsy challenge on Dario Sakhimzedeh, taking a card as punishment, with the resulting free-kick being a good delivery by Dånjal ut ur Aldin to find Miskjalendzki, whose header fell to Razdjani Emiri at the otherside of the goal mouth for a knee-jerk poke inside the unguarded post. Craitish calls for offside abound, but the man on the other post was playing the forward on, and the equaliser stood. The defensive-minded Craits hung-on, however, as Elwynn failed to build on the goal in the final minutes, and a draw signalled the completion of the tournament. Although most may not consider conceding three goals to Arboria at home cause to celebrate, that they scored six in the same game gave the Craits the advantage over Elwynn, despite their respective clean sheet and matching goal difference.
With a week to spare before the 2017 qualifiers begin, Elwynn will be content with their performances in their first friendly tournament appearance as they go into their group as favourites. Craitland, for all their faults, are likely to be buoyed by a first trophy since 2011, albeit not a competitive one, ahead of their opener against Mishalan.
