Gerenia v Birgeshir (10/06)
Gerenia v Birgeshir (10/06)
New Mayfield Park in Klämen played host to a rather odd fixture, as Gerenia hosted Birgeshir in a dress rehearsal of the two's World Cup clash in the Snakepit next month, with the two FAs agreeing to the tie before the draw was made. And the game was also made odd by both teams wearing their away kits, as both Birgeshir's home (all white) and away (all blue) kits clashing with Gerenia's white-and-blue striped home kit, so the Gerenian fans seemed a little confused when they saw their heroes walking out in all red, not that it stifled their interest in making some serious noise as the national anthem rang out.
And seemingly both sides had an interest in going for it too, with just twenty-six seconds required for Tёvrat Çıkthan to leather a shot against the crossbar. The home side, backed on by their ever-boisterous "Marauders", came into an open game with a lot of attacking intent, as Fabris Balbîn responded by fizzing a shot against the post four minutes later. An exciting start saw both teams counter-attack each other and force the goalkeepers into some saves, and it wasn't long before one of those shots found the net, as Çengiz Tahir ran at the Gerenian defence, before sliding the ball across to Tёvrat Çıkthan, with the Otaq Röyal man slotting the ball into the bottom-left corner beyond Režan Arkuse from the edge of the box. Gerenia responded well, with Karl Brükner forcing tIu-Senb Ercanojk into several key saves, before Jan Korau lashed an effort from 30 yards which narrowly went over. Birgeshir tried to tighten the defence, and were able to soak up the Gerenian pressure, and on the stroke of half-time, the broke down the right, with Ra-to-men Mahırojk crossing in for Çıkthan, who chested the ball down before volleying the ball into the roof of the net past the onrushing keeper to double Birgeshir's lead with the final kick of the half.
Gerenia needed to make changes at the break, and on came Imre Dameanóvița, who made an almost instant impact by running into the Birgeshir box before being hauled down by Menkara Iňanojk to give the home team a penalty. However, Zelmar Toscano's spot kick was saved by the goalkeeper, who was hugged by his defenders after the rebound had been shanked into the crowd for a throw-in. Birgeshir again had some defending to do, but in an enthralling and chance-ridden game, it was inevitably going to break, and it did when Korau's long ball forward was picked up by Toscano, who span his marker and threaded through Karl Brükner, who coolly rounded the goalkeeper and tucked home to halve the deficit. Birgeshir though responded, and almost restored their two goal lead when Mahırojk struck the bar from 25-yards, with Zet Khayakojk crossing the rebound back into the box, only for Çıkthan to head straight at the goalkeeper. Gerenia were still in the ascendancy, and with 15 minutes left to go, they equalised, as Zorau Pánčaster made himself some room 30-yards from goal, before striking a low strike which the keeper could only parry into the path of substitute Peder Segara, who easily tapped home for 2-2. And Gerenia were going all out for the win, and they soon found themselves infront as Toscano beat 4 defenders on a mazing run before sliding the ball between the keepers' legs. Gerenia then had a chance to make it four from the spot, as Menkara Iňanojk blocked the ball on the line with his hand to prevent a sweet strike from Toscano from going in, leading to a dismissal for the Birgeshir defender. Toscano, who missed the earlier penalty, elected to delegate responsibility for this one to defender Jan Korau, who subsequently smashed the ball into the top-left beyond the keeper, who had guessed correctly, to increased Gerenia's lead. Birgeshir responded in typical end to end fashion from the kick off, running down the left, with Çengiz Tahir crossing in only for Korau to head away, only as far as Kanebti Seltekojk, who smashed a volley in from fully 40-yards that looped into the top-right corner, completely embarrassing the goalkeeper. Birgeshir almost equalised, but a 94th minute strike from Tёvrat Çıkthan was held by the keeper, as Gerenia edged an absolute classic match 4-3, and if we get anything close to a repeat in July, we'll all be in for one heck of a treat.
