Re: 2014 FMRL World Cup finals
Final
Mercury 42-34 Craitland
A rugby league match between Mercury and Craitland is never a let-down, and sure enough, this epic final proved the rule. Mercury rushed into a 10-0 lead, but just 7 minutes later, the advantage had gone to Craitland and then come back, as Mercury answered two quick Craitish tries with one of their own to make it 16-12. Things were level once again as Craitland scored in the corner, with the conversion agonisingly close as it rattled the post. Just before half-time, Mercury had a try disallowed by the video referee, the overly-harsh obstruction rule rearing its ugly head for yet another time in this tournament.
Craitland were obviously not ready for the restart in the second half, as the kick-off bounced, then sailed over the head of the full-back. Mercury punished the error from the resulting goal-line drop-out, scoring under the posts to regain a 6-point lead. They increased the lead to 24-16 after Craitland conceded a holding down penalty. Craitland almost had a chance to close the gap, but the video ref judged that the ball had not been grounded correctly, and the player was held up on the last tackle. They didn't make a mistake on their next attack, however, and they followed it up with another two quick tries, to take a 10-point advantage into the final 15 minutes. Mercury weren't prepared to give up the battle for revenge, and they narrowed the gap to 6-points with an unconverted try. Craitland didn't organise properly from the kick-off either, allowing a 90-metre run-in for an equalising try. Mercury had a player sent to the sin-bin after a professional foul, but an intercept gave the defence a sigh of relief, as they moved the ball up to half-way. With Craitland's defence scrambling back, Mercury pushed on forward, and their efforts paid off with a try 5 minutes from time to make it 40-34. Craitland were desperate to get up the other end of the field, but just two minutes from time, another obstruction penalty 49 metres out gave Mercury the chance to put the game beyond them. In a game between Mercury and Craitland, it's inevitable that something dramatic will happen, but luckily for Mercury, the ball found its way over after pinging the crossbar. A short kick-off gave Craitland the field position, but there just wasn't enough time, and Mercury kept them out to claim their second title. As we leave North Antarctica after a great World Cup, it's true what they say, revenge is a dish best served bloody freezing!
