Re: 2018 FMRL World Cup
Birgeshir returned to the final for the second consecutive occasion, with the chance to make up for last year's 28-22 defeat to Senya. Two-time winners Mercury reached the final for the first time in four years, with the opportunity to re-take the record for most wins on the line. Neither side wanted to give anything away, although a penalty meant Mercury were able to edge into a 2-0 lead thanks to the boot of Robert Cooper. The lead didn't last long, however, as Öňan's impressive catch give him a simple finish in the corner to make it 4-2 to Birgeshir. Gündoganojk failed to take in Senojk's pass, allowing Thomas Ware to sprint 80m to retake the lead, although Birgeshir's defence did a very good job of forcing him towards the corner to make the kick more difficult. Cooper was unable to convert, and the difference remained just two points. Ertunçojk added four points in fairly quick succession, as silly penalties cost Mercury their advantage, and Birgeshir went into the break leading by 8 points to 6.Spoiler!
They could have extended their lead further, but a Töros Koç try was ruled out by the video referee for obstruction. Mercury made no mistake in going up the other end, however, and edged back ahead, thanks to Luke Hamilton's try, Cooper making the most of the relatively simple kick. They were somewhat fortunate not to fall behind again, as Birgeshir managed an extended spell of pressure on the Mercurian goal line, but the defence were able to stand firm, and eventually, the ball was coughed up by Doğanojk. Cooper stepped up again and made the difference six, with just ten minutes remaining, after Steve Evans was held down. Mercury were proficient at coming forward, and were lining up for the one-pointer to try and put the game to bed, but Cooper was off the mark, and Mercury were again lucky, as the ball cannoned off the post, and straight into the arms of Winter, who slid in to extend Mercury's lead to 10, with Cooper ensuring that this kick found its way over. Suddenly, at 12 points down, the Birgesh side seemed disheartened, and it showed as Mercury were able to stroll in for another try with less than a minute remaining to seal the game and their third title.
