North Circumpolar Constellations
North Circumpolar Constellations
This is by far not official unless other people want to adopt it. But this is something I've been planning to do for a while. The South Circumpolar Constellation map should be done soon. Anyways, considering Micras is in the Atos system as opposed to the Sol system, which is set in a different galaxy (as far as I know) we would have a different set of constellations. So here are the first observations published by the Asimov Memorial Observatory in Universalis.

You do remember Spangle's star map? http://www.micras.org/forum/viewtopic.p ... 41&start=0

Yeah, we already made a star map, complete with star coords and apparently luminosities (on a scale from 1-256)
with roughly the correct number of stars.

Re: North Circumpolar Constellations
How can I take that map and make circumpolar projections from it so I can map constellations?

Re: North Circumpolar Constellations
GIMP could do it easily but would lose a good number of the stars...
I am working on a way to plot them from the coordinates...
Shouldn't be hard using a little cosine and sine rules

Re: North Circumpolar Constellations
Well, it is now to point out that Micras appears to be in a vaguely string or bar shaped galaxy and happens to be aligned horizontally across it.
This also explains the apparent ease in navigating Micras (as evident by claims going across the entire planet)
This however, leaves out a north star...
And a south star...

http://micras.org/temp/phptests/south_polar.php
It's easy to explain why it's pipe/string shaped galaxy may be in the shape it evidently is.
Option 1)
The Galaxy was originally an elliptical galaxy but got stretched out by a passing larger galaxy.
Option 2)
The Galaxy formed along a thread of Cosmic String, 1.4km of Cosmic string weighs more than the Earth so it is more than enough for a Galaxy to form around (entire galactic clusters can form around it ). It is also the width of a proton so Micras won't crash into it
Option 3)
There are probably more options, we physicists still have a lot of theory flying around

Cool.
Next question: How can I save those image files? Don't forget that iMac's don't have right-click. We're too stylish for it.
And I'd go with option 1. It's the simplest explanation.

Re: North Circumpolar Constellations
That could also have been interpreted via the idea that the flying islands used string theory
erm
file>save as?
then rename from .php to .png
Or... I'll save them and upload into the maps folder.

Re: North Circumpolar Constellations
Can I post my constellations map to the Data/Facts section, or is it not "official"?

Re: North Circumpolar Constellations
I think they should be suggestions only. There's no reason we need canon constellations. On Earth, all the different ancient cultures formed different constellations.

Re: North Circumpolar Constellations
Of course. But it'd still be nice to have the list somewhere there, even as "suggestions" - so we don't have new people coming along every two months and saying "why don't we make up constellations?"

Re: North Circumpolar Constellations
Definitely. I think everyone can make up constellations however they like. I just want to do my own interpretation. People can take it at face value and use it or make their own if they want something else.
Where is the maps folder btw?

Re: North Circumpolar Constellations
Can we put constellations in the "pictures" forum then?

Re: North Circumpolar Constellations
Well we need to finalise the star map totally apparently
But constellation maps wouldn't be a terrible idea, but they would be linked to as "Such-and-such's culture's constellation map"
But don't start yet, apparently some changes need to be done to the star map (according to scott)
