[Talenore] Actions Thread
Overview: The Imperial garrison on Talenore actively defends itself against an attempted landing by the New Zimian War League
OOC: It might help if I knocked together a quick map of the island.Narrative: Talenore is a protectorate of the Imperial Republic located in the Skerry Isles. It is largely unremarkable except for the controversies between Talcorp, the island's main employee, and the fractious autonomy movement. It also plays host to a large Imperial naval station and garrison of auxiliaries. The naval formation associated with the station - Task Force 90 - was deployed away to the Florian Republic at the start of the War of Lost Brothers, leading it to caught in the mutual mauling that was the Battle of Carama Bay. This left the auxiliaries and local forces to defend the island.
Following an ongoing preliminary bombardment, which wrecked the harbour district and inflicted damage on the MoMA Station, the garrison had been placed onto alert whilst local defence forces had been mobilised in a supporting role - primarily preparing beach defences, effecting repairs to damaged infrastructure, and preparing local defensive strong-points. Local armed groups, a legacy of long term militancy on the island, have also pledged their support to the defenders in return for a better deal on autonomy at the expense of Talcorp.
The garrison endured the greater part of its losses, 137 dead and 592 wounded, after being caught unawares on the first day. Since then military hardware has been dispersed and kept mobile, in the hope of preventing the cruising Sheng zeroing in on their positions. Nonetheless sixteen 105mm field guns, a Buk battery surveillance radar and a mobile command post were destroyed.
Around 150 civilian deaths were reported. Hospitals have experienced difficulties with the triage of a large number of civilian wounded, including victims of shell-shock.
On (insert AN time date corresponding to 00:53, 26 December 2017 GMT) an assortment of small craft escorted by the Sheng Class Cruiser, 2 Indigo Class Gunboats and a partially submerged contact, possibly the Rey Class "Submersible Destroyer", were observed approaching shore. The first of six Moraquine SRBMs, Imperial reproductions armed with conventional warheads, were launched at the course and bearing of the Sheng Cruiser. As the landing force approached shore, the remaining 105mm light gun batteries, grouped in nineteen batteries of six and dispersed across the island, opened up on the assorted landing craft.
Whilst this continued, one hundred and fifty "Trump" auto-cannons, truck-mounted and radar guided anti-aircraft weapons, were driven up to the shore supported by 6,000 auxiliaries assigned to the garrison Security Vexillation plus an irregular force of personnel from the Talenore Defence Force who had already been in position preparing beach defences when the landings began but were themselves equipped with little more than small arms and engineering equipment. The Trump carries the same 75mm autocannon as borne by the Snark and the barrels of these were depressed downwards so as to face the incoming tide in direct fire mode. Depending upon where, amongst the low rolling dunes, the Trumps were situated, the trucks were wedged and an angle to improve their field of fire. The autocannons were then set to fire-free mode against the incoming radar tracks. Until each one was destroyed they would be able to keep up a murderous rate of fire against the invaders.
Remaining forces were held in mobile reserve to reinforce the defenders, defend the MoMA Station, and respond to further landings.
At the MoMA Station, the monitoring outpost maintained by the Vexillation XX Neriosang tried to make sense of the enemy's signal traffic, relaying whatever encrypted data it could hoover up to Shirekeep via uplinks to the orbiting Natopian space station. At the same time the broadcasting locations of suspected enemy vessels were relayed to the command posts of the Area Defence Vexillation to update their target plots. Concurrently, personnel from the vexillations of the Operations Bureau set to work preparing and placing demolition charges around various antennae, phased arrays and databanks.
In overview, the garrison was outnumbered but the enemy had to survive getting ashore first. All the while, the defenders now knew, a relief force was already underway.
All this has happened before, and all this will happen again.

OOC: It would.
Also, mainly for my own use, here is my understanding of the balance of forces on and against Talenore, with certain small arms omitted but presumed present (reminder: you guys should really be copying these figures into every new thread for clarity, without me having to fetch them up).
If I've missed anything, speak now. Additional forces may be introduced within the bounds of operational credibility.
As a matter of some urgency, the Passio-Corum side are advised to explain how they intend to get a division-strength semi-mechanised landing force ashore without any mention of troop ships or specialised landing vessels, and by what means (landing on unimproved beach vs. capturing an intact port facility, for instance) otherwise the landing cannot be considered feasible.

Okay, as it stands then:
I'm also trying to update the Talenore article so that there is a reference point.
Spoiler!

Re: [Talenore] Actions Thread
OOC: On an unrelated note, I'd just like to flutter my eyelids and say "really?"
I've got nothing against strategic deception but I would like to request that a modest effusion of blood be registered from the opposing side, particularly the escorting warships that would have had to come in closer to make the bait and switch believable, or presumably to have made the observations necessary to deduce the strength of opposition.
Spoiler!
Summary: With the threat of invasion seemingly evaporating, the TDF troops resume their defensive preparations whilst the mobile elements of the garrison, including the towed artillery, resumed their cycle of redeployments.
Spoiler!
All this has happened before, and all this will happen again.

Rest assured I am prepared to factor in some losses as a result of this deception. I intend to write an article about it in the New Zimian Standard, as you'll see shortly.

A re-cap of Pallisican activities around Talenore over the past few days.
December 22, 2017
Order:
(1 Sheng Class Cruiser, 2 Indigo Class Gunboats, 1 Rey Class Submersible Destroyer)
Action: Commence bombardment of Talenore's ports and harbors. Destroy all SANE-affiliated units and buildings which fail to demonstrate compliance with the policies of the Captive Sea Imperial Trade Company or Tax Guild of the Sea of Storms.
Limitation: N/A
Report:
The New Zimian War League has initiated a naval bombardment of the Shireithian colony of Talenore, in the central Skerry Isles. In a move which is assured to be regarded as a considerable escalation in the ongoing conflict which has arisen as a result of the War of Lost Brothers, the War League earlier today confirmed that it has ordered several ships, including the lone Sheng-class Cruiser which it has stationed in the Captive sea as part of Task Force 36.67-002 to begin firing upon certain targets in the formerly independent state which lies off the eastern shore of Kakali Island. Speaking today in an interview with the New Zimian Standard, a Chief Spokesman for the Commander of the New Zimian War League outlined the nature of the attacks against Talenore, stating that four New Zimian ships had begun a campaign aimed at destroying and disabling all of Talenore's major ports and harbors.
"For the time being we have resolved to limit the scope of our operations to the destruction of all of Talenore's points of entry," said the War League Spokesman. "We have, with that in mind, already deployed a portion of our vessels stationed in the region on their mission, which aims to inflict maximum damage on all of Talenore's ports and harbors."
When questioned as to whether the War League intends on deploying forces into Talenore for the purposes of occupying the island, the War League spokesman confirmed that such a move is highly likely to occur in coming days.
"Given the relative lack of resistance which we have faced since implementing our blockade two days ago (PSSC)," said the War League spokesman. "We expect to not only deploy our forces into Talenore, but to be in control of the island by the end of the year. That said, we are presently focusing on the present task of retaining our blockade, and destroying certain aspects of the island's infrastructure."
The announcement of the bombardment of Talenore's harbors comes soon after an announcement by Shireroth and Natopia that they have deployed forces as part of an expansion of their military campaign in northern Keltia, which aims to eliminate the influence of the USSO in the region. When pressed with questions on its views regarding this deployment of forces by SANE-affiliated nations, the spokesman for the War League expressed confidence that Pallisican interests, and those of its allies, will ultimately prevail across northern Keltia and the Great Western Sea.
"The scope of this war extends far beyond the current capacities of our adversaries," said the spokesman for the Commander of the War League. "At the end of the day, no amount of the world's finest weaponry will suffice to bring an end to USSO supremacy in the modern era. Those who seek to compete with us, and to out-compete us, will need at some point to lay down their arms in order to pursue more meaningful endeavors. When they are willing to pursue these endeavors, we will remain willing to help bring them into our fold, so that they can truly begin to compete against us."

Limitation: N/A
Report:
One-hundred and forty-eight New Zimian soldiers were killed in a short-lived assault against the city of Talenore late last night. According to reports confirmed by the War League, these soldiers - one-quarter of all Pallisican casualties - occurred as a result of what the War League describes as an intelligence mission aimed at probing Talenore's defenses, and Shireroth's defensive responses. Despite incurring high casualties as a result of the operation, the War League has hailed the mission as a success, stating that it has learned a great deal about Shireithian dispositions following its attack.
"We are grateful to those soldiers who died while carrying out the missions to which they were assigned," said a spokesman for the War League. "Already our high priests have begun the ceremonies in honor of these soldiers, whose spirits may travel lightly as they journey to the Inner World, on the basis of the sure knowledge that their lives contributed to our ultimate victory. In their honor we shall continue to prevail across this and all fronts."
Despite the claims of the War League that it achieved its objectives in its assault against Talenore, which has faced bombardment for nearly a week, as well as an extensive blockade which has thus far prevented the movement of goods to and from the island, critics of the War League assert that it is attempting to save face following what amounts to a botched military operation.
"Despite the positive spin which the League may attempt to place on things," said Fanälos Damebéiod, Junior Chairman for the Solidarity Party in the Houses of Corum. "there is no denying the fact that the War League was forced to shift the parameters of its operation after it became apparent that it could not sustain an assault, much less an occupation of the city without further logistical planning and tactical analysis. The War League may have acquired intelligence, but at a higher cost than was warranted. Let us hope this does not define the course of our efforts in this war."
In support of their criticism of the assault against Talenore, opponents of the War League point to further, unconfirmed reports regarding the destruction of one of its Northman Class Corvettes in the waters surrounding the Gulf of Jangsong. Although it has as-of-yet refused to confirm the loss of its ship, the War League has confirmed that Natopian forces have engaged Pallisican units station in far northern Keltia.
"There can be no denial of the fact that under the advisement of its master, Shireroth, Natopia has opted for the course of war in northern Keltia," said the War league spokesman when questioned on matters relating to the growing front surrounding Elijah's Rest. "Beyond this fact, we are unprepared to comment on the state of affairs in the far north. Rest assured that we are closely working with our friends and family along the Strait of Haifa to continue to ensure long-term victory."

Re: [Talenore] Actions Thread
Summary: The island's garrison, for a change, responds to the latest in a series of ongoing raids.
Action of 35.XV.1655
Narrative: 18 105mm light guns engaged 3 Indigo Class Gunboats (1 battery of 6 per boat), target location conducted by Vexillation XX Neriosang monitoring station, Area Defence Vexillation Buk battery radar plus TDF coast guard observers and three spotter light-aircraft and two microlights organised by the 120 man strong air-arm of TDF. These spotter aircraft were requisitioned civilian vehicles commandeered in the wake of the invasion scare. Their short take off and landing capabilities make them particularly suited for utilising highways and improvised landing strips, a handy consideration when the main runway at the MoMA station has been a frequent target for naval bombardment.
Incoming air-raids mounted by the "Kakali City Air Detachment" comprising of 1 Alpha Class Proximity Aircraft, 1 Aead Class Attack Helicopter and 7 Petal Class Unmanned aircraft were detected by the two remaining surveillance radars of the Area Defence Vexillation's Buk batteries at a range of 160 km distance from the island. Radar contact with the unmanned drones proved to be intermittent leaving the Vexillation's commander to prioritise the targeting of incoming ground attack aircraft and attack helicopter. The 3 available mobile launchers were instructed to engage in the first instance the incoming attack aircraft whilst at sea. Each launcher lofted a single 9М38 surface to air missile as the contact passed within the 30 km threshold for engagement. The launchers were subsequently moved out of position with about twenty-five minutes to pack up and get underway and with another forty-five minutes to arrive at concealed positions amongst agricultural plantations and residential areas.
Meanwhile, in settlements all across the island, air-raid sirens wailed their ominous warning.
There remained on the island 408 Trump radar-tracking autocannons in working order and let's say that, at any one moment, a third of these are on air defence duties, a third are assigned to shore defence duties and the final third are engaged in shifting locations as part of a near continual cycle of rotations between locations prepared by the Talenore Defence Forces. Accordingly whatever unidentified aircraft passed over the airspace above the island would face an incessant barrage of fire from the ground, at a rate of 90 75mm rounds per minute up to an altitude of 7,678 m (25,000 ft).
OOC: I'll try and keep a note of ongoing casualties here.Overview: The island's populist and left-leaning government has introduced rationing of food and petrol, the collectivisation of agricultural and industrial concerns and introduced a selective draft of all males between the ages of 17 and 25 in order to create an industrial work force.
The island has been under a loose blockade for some time now owing to enemy activities in the Captive Sea, however the strain on food stocks has been partially off-set by coastal fishing inside a 10 km limit - within the range of the island's light guns. Three trawlers have however been lost in this period leading to calls for the TDF to step up efforts to bring it's moribund coastal defence forces, consisting of mothballed revenue cutters, back into being.
There has been some dissatisfaction with the passive nature of the garrison's response to the continual harassment bombardment kept up by an off-shore patrol of hostile ships. The island's military commander was seemingly more content to avoid incurring excessive losses than engage in retaliatory actions. Whilst Keltia Command's eyes have been more firmly fixed on the Gulf of Jangsong and the Straits of Haifa, relegating the island to the status of a backwater, signals received from Shirekeep have grown increasingly terse as the Steward's displeasure towards the perceived pacificity of Imperial Forces has steadily mounted. Finally the commander was informed that his performance was under review and that his daughter was to be honoured as a guest of the Kaiser. Getting the hint, the commander authorised the Area Defence Vexillation to respond robustly to the latest attack.
The Musica Fleet was dispatched some time ago to effect the relief of the island, it's present whereabouts is a cause for some concern and speculation amongst the garrison.
All this has happened before, and all this will happen again.
