[Backstory] Driven
Montague had arrived at Home only the previous day, travelling on the specifically requistioned SS Indomitable. The new Home was different to the old one, situated on a single island on the old Collins Islands now simply referred to as Lovely Residual Territory. He had come not on any military business as such but as a New Brittanian noble visiting a rare breed in deed these days; a Lovely Noble.
Montague had been greeted on the Quayside by Vice Admiral Hastings (Ret.). Since Lovely's withdrawl from the Micronational world stage, Hastings had decided that a life at sea in the Royal Lovely Navy was not exactly for him. Now the 39 year old enjoyed life as full as he could, running a small shipping business from modestly sized offices on the Home waterfront. Now, Hastings was giving the First Lord of the Admiralty of Lovely and of New Brittania a lift up to the mansion house atop the hill on the outskirts of Home. The car was left outside the mansion and Montague and Hastings were both lead in by the Butler. Montague knew the house well enough and went up to the library where he sat behind the oak desk in the large red leather chair.
After 15 minutes, the Lovely Noble entered the Library with the look he always greeted Lord Montague with in recent months. Montague had been looking over documents he had had in his coat pocket and been annotating them. He put these documents back into his pocket and met the gaze of the Lovely noble.
"Baron Glenmaye, its wonderful to see you again." said Montague with a smile. Montague's aged face wrinkled as he smiled. A life at sea hadn't helped Montague retain any youthful looks but he still had a full head of bright white hair.
"Viscount Stanleybridge. Or should I call you Duke Hyarnustar these days? I never quite know." replied Glenmaye, not returning the smile and seeming angry with the presence of Lord from New Brittania.
"You could try calling me Father, Antony." said Montague to his son.
"Why should I call you that? You were no father to me. And would you mind getting out of my chair and out from behind my desk?" said Antony Montague to his father. There was no love lost in this relationship in recent months.
"It was your grandfather's desk." replied Charles Montague to his son.
"Yes, your father-in-law's desk. Let's remember, father, that you lived off my mother for years. You took her name and you took her titles. It is her and her side of the family that I love and that I consider family, not you." said Antony, saying the word father with all the contempt he could muster. The words stung at Charles Montague but he couldnt show weakness to his son. He maintained his composure and replied in turn.
"Montague was a far better name that deMontford. I wont deny that most of the titles are from your mother's side and that most of the family's wealth is again from your mother's side. Look here Antony, I've not travelled all this way to engage in bickering with you. You're probably aware that war is going to affect most of Micras now. I'm going to be tied up in it directly." stated Charles Montague. He withdrew other papers from his coat pocket, unfolded them and rested them on the desk.
"These papers are explanations of what happens in the event of my death and what is going to happen in my absence from New Brittania. During the war, you are given full control over the Duchy of Hyarnustar so far as the law allows. In the event of my death, the Duchy will pass into your hands along with all my possessions and all my non-governmental titles and honours. You are now my sole beneficiary." finished Montague, stepping up from the desk and beginning to walk out of the library. His son still had a cold look on his face as Montague passed. The air seemed to have chilled as one generation looked at another. Charles Montague was nearly at the door when Antony Montague began to speak. Charles had hoped they would be words of rapprochement, but they were nothing more than the usual spiteful words.
"We all know the reason why I'm your sole beneficiary. Its because the rest of the family are dead as a result of one of your poxy little wars that you so badly lost. You as good as killed my mother and my sisters and my nephews and my nieces by fighting that war. And now you run away to another country and live their, betraying your family." hissed Antony Montague. Charles stopped in his tracks and contemplated retaliating against his son. He did nothing though. He continued his walk out onto the stairs and down towards the entrance hall.
In the entrance hall, he motioned for the butler to bring his cane and hat. Hastings moved up beside him.
"How did it go, sir?" asked Hastings. Even now he was outside the military, he still felt obliged to call the old man 'sir'.
"As well as could be expected. You're his friend Paul. Does he really despise me that much?" asked Charles, unknowingly confiding in Hastings that he was hurt by his son.
"You don't come up much, sir." lied Hastings, which he was sure Charles Montague would detect. Montague however decided that if he was being lied to like this, it was in his best interests. At this point, Montague's cane and seaman's hat arrived but it was not being carried by the butler.
"Charles! It's so lovely to see you again!" said a young-ish woman, no older than 40.
"Its nice to see you again, Marie. Are you looking after him?" asked Montague with a warm smile to his daughter-in-law.
"Of course I am. I take from the fact he's in a foul mood up there that the meeting wasn't pleasant." stated Marie.
"That's an understatement, my dear. Time is precious and I have a war to plan, fight and win." said Montague.
"He blames you, you know. He thinks it is all your fault that nearly his entire family is dead. He thinks you don't care, Charles." said Marie, in her soft manner. The softness did not do much to hide the bluntness of the message however.
"Does he not realise that they were children and my grandchildren? Does he not realise that it was my wife who died? She was my only love, for fuck's sake! Just because I dont subscribe to this stupid emotional trend of outpouring grief that seems to be prevalent these days doesn't mean I don't care, Marie. He needs to know that. Every single Novatainian or Tokidokan scumbag and shit I am responsible for killing in war will never make up for the fact that they took away nearly my entire family. You can tell your husband that, Marie." shouted Montague, betraying his emotions in a manner he nor Marie was accustomed too. Montague did not swear and Marie knew that only something of this magnitude would push him over the edge.
"This coming will be so huge that it even chills me to the bone. Circum Raynor will be childs play to this conflict and I barely made it through that war with my life. I dont expect to make it through this one so luckily. Keep looking after him and make sure the children know I was here and I send them my love. Tell him I say goodbye" finished Charles Montague, putting on his cap before walking out of the door and giving a single wave to Marie Montague-Galway.
He entered the car and Hastings drove off as Antony Montague tracked the car's progress out of the mansion's gardens.
"Hastings, I want you with me in this war. You've been with me on just about every other war and I want you on hand in this one. Don't worry, you won't have to be commissioned into the New Brittanian Navy. By the way, man, have you got yourself a wife yet?" said Montague abrasively, trying to return to the supposedly gruff man that the media had sought to portay him as.
"Yes, sir, I will join you. And no, sir, I haven't married since you've been gone." said Hastings.
"Shame. Well, to war we go Vice Admiral Paul Hastings, Retired. May the Lord Bless you and Keep you, son." said Montague.
"Same to you, sir." replied Hastings. The rest of the journey to the Quayside was in silence. The Indomitable sailed later that evening, with the sunset silhouetting the liner.

Was it not NB or Alexandria that killed them all? I can't remember. It is incredibly accurate.
Pass my regards on to Hastings, one thing though, wasn't hastings a woman, remember, she was strange among the marines because she was a female. I distinctly remember you talking on the bridge of a ship to a female high up marine?

No, Hastings was always a man.....I think. He wasn't a Marine but my adjutant who got promoted because of his actions during the Matbaaic Liberation.babs wrote:Was it not NB or Alexandria that killed them all? I can't remember. It is incredibly accurate.

They were all killed during the brutal occupation and suppression of Lovely lands by Novatainian and Tokidokan forces during the War of Matbaaic Liberation.

Montague, can you please give me a link to that? Because the way I remember the war, Novatainia did EVERYTHING within their power to avoid bloodshed for the majority of the war. If you don't think that impression was obvious from our posts, you're kidding yourself. The only slaughter I remember was when we got uncoordinated with attacks and you started slaughtering my airforce before Lachlan arrived and the treaty was finally negotiated.
The only alternative I can see is you wrote this about slaughtering well after we left the war and stopped reading, which seems
a. Foolish if you want us not to dispute it later and
b. Unrealistic as, having already left, why do you dispute this now?

Thats the report of when it happened. (and play along, it adds some drama to the whole thing!! )Montague had been in his cabin as First Lord of the Admiralty for the days the majority of the 1st Lovely Flotilla sailed northwards. What he was doing in there, nobody quite new. Even Hastings hadn't decided to trouble him. As they approached their destination, Hastings finally decided he should pay the First Lord a visit.
He entered the rather spacious cabin of the Spexico and saw the First Lord sitting at his desk, looking over documents and with a glass of scotch the side of the desk. Montague, dressed in his uniform despite not being in public, looked up from his desk with his glasses on the end of his nose and put his pen down.
"Nice to have a visitor after all these days, Hastings." said Montague with a wry smile. He gestured to his adjutant to have a seat across the desk and poured him a scotch.
"Just thought I should tell you that we've arrived, sir." informed Hastings sitting down.
"Excellent, excellent." said Montague. He glanced at a photo on the edge of his oak desk. Hastings saw the glance and realised what he had feared.
"You know, I was aware of it Paul." said Montague, his voice full of sadness.
"I never knew, sir. But the Admiralty thought it better that you shouldn't know, lest your emotions get in the way during the war." said Hastings, trying to explain himself.
"A good decision. The Admiralty didn't take into account I was the Director of the Secret Service, the remnants of which were on my payroll. I got the message through them." explained Montague, taking a sip from his whisky.
"I'm really quite sorry for you, sir. What exactly happened with them?" said Hastings, awkwardly.
"My wife, my two daughters and my three grandchildren were at Stanleybridge. Luckily, my son Antony and his family were in Glenmaye outside of Home. Stanleybridge is situated about a hundred miles south of our Northern Border. When the Novatainians and Tokidoans came in, they would have reached it and occupied it. The Secret Service report I got was from a junior member named Jonathan Rex, he's quite the good writer. Apparently, the Novatainians didn't know the importance of the estate until a Colonel came around one day and realised who the family there were. The next day, an NISB agent arrived in the village by helicopter. That was when Kael -" said Montague before being interrupted by Hastings.
"Kael? As in THE Kael? He's been hiding out there all this time?" asked Hastings.
"Yes, Kael. Despite what CTU and IASA may say about him, he was my deputy in the Secret Service. He was a good chap and a decent man. Well, when the NISB agent turned up that was when the pretenses had to drop and action was needed. He mobilised the Secret Service element of the estate and prepared to evacuate my family. The NISB and their lackees in the army got there first though. According to Mr. Rex, Kael lead the fight as the NISB came up the drive, shooting dead about 20 of their soldiers alone. However, it was 500 men against 10 in that fight and inevitably quantity won out. According to Mr. Rex, Kael ordered him to assume his disguise as a stable boy. The NISB burst into the House and Kael became a hero, grabbing one of the old ancestral swords and cutting down several soldiers as they entered. It was then that the NISB agent pulled out his pistol and sneered as he emptied a clip into Kael's body. The other Secret Service men soon died." finished Montague.
"And what happened to the family?" asked Hastings, astonished. Montague paused to steady himself for what he was about to say, something which he had not told anyone.
"The report says that the NISB agent instructed his soldiers to have their way with my two daughters. Apparently for an hour my grandchildren were forced to listen to the screams of their mothers as they were raped. Jonathan says Alistair, my oldest grandchild, he was 11, had enough and rugby tackled the NISB agent. The agent threw him off and shot him before calling a halt to the rapes. My family was lined up in the village square after and shot in front of the villagers. Jonathan Rex escaped with his life because he was disguised as a stable boy, who could be "re-progammed" into a decent Novatanian."
"That's why you relinquished command of the fleet and took control of that army." realised Hastings.
"Indeed. That's why I left DCHQ after they capitulated to the bastards who killed my family. That's why I went on the rampage in this fleet. That's why I'm going to do what i'm going to do. But you said we have arrived?" asked Montague.
"Yes, sir." replied Hastings.
"Here are the orders. Execute them to the letter. I'll be on the bridge to observe in half an hour." ordered Montague, handing over a single sheet of paper with his orders for the fleet on them.
