[Backstory] The Long Walk
Admiral Smedley looked at his reflection in the bedroom mirror. Staring back at him was a man he once thought he'd never become. The white, freshly dry-cleaned uniform, threaded with gold and weighted by medals reminded him of times he sometimes wished he could forget. Yet staring at the golden symbols of pride brought him back to the truth; he was about to do it all over again. In two minutes he would put on his hat, walk down the stairs and look into the eyes of his loving family. Then, after brief goodbyes he would leave them behind and walk out of his front door, knowing it might be the last time he ever does so. He would walk down the driveway to the end of the lawn, a walk that became longer every time he made it, he would walk to the end of the lawn where his personal Anubis would whisk him away from all that he loves to come face to face with all that he hates.
War, death. They would be his companions now. But he had to do it. It was his duty, his honor, to defend his nation once again. He would willingly do what was necessary to ensure his loved ones woke up in a free and unopressed Riponia. He was going to war so war wouldn't come to them.
His eyes flicked from the medals to stare at themselves. He had to be brave, he wiped the tear from his eye and positioned his hat on his well-combed hair.
The rotors of the Anubis swiped through the sunlight, creating a shimmering effect inside. The Admiral looked out of the windscreen. In the distance the dark shapes of the fleet, reflected brilliantly in the calm ocean, were being busily attended to by helicopters. The pilot smiled.
"They're synchronising the security systems, the new battlefield integration software is over 100 times more secure than the last generation. We've been operating at two thirds optimum security, Sir."
"Good. How long until we touch down?"
"Three minutes sir." said the pilot, the copter was rocket as a jet aircraft flew past. "Is that the UCAV?" asked the Admiral.
"Yes sir, they've been testing her for weeks."
"Excellent." said the Admiral, he sat back in his seat and picked up his newspaper. Soon he would stand upon the deck of his flagship.
