Oh come on... McCarthy was at least persecuting an actual enemy, not necessarily terribly well and quite often the wrong people (the witch hunt should have been in academia and the intelligence community rather than say the entertainment industry), but he at least made the bastards watch their back, and there was definite merit in making life difficult for the Soviet Union's ideological fellow travellers.
