The sad thing is that this was a small trivial petition. The bigger mass protests are treated exactly the same as that. Millions were told to sit down and shut up as we went to war thanks to the last PM after many petitions, prominent personalities speaking against it not to mention the vast march against the war in London led by the then mayor our nasally wine slurping anti-Semite Ken Livingstone. Brown is clinging to a throne he's going to be dragged from very soon, kicking and screaming (either by the Torys or his own cabinet)

It shows how times have changed really. Hitler invaded Poland, and - in the grand scheme of things - within a matter of hours, the nation was at war, no quibble. Citizens were backing it, there was a great spirit of patriotism, and going off to war after just one measly invasion somewhere which many people at the time would have classed as a different world.
Now you say 'So shall we go and help the people in the country that have been suffering for years on end at the hands of a brutal tyrant?'
NO! SOME OF US MIGHT DIE!!
<insert massive petitions, marches, rants about human rights, oil, nuclear weapons, Hans Blix charging about the place like a bull in a china shop, etc etc.>

Iraq has never been classed as modern
It's because the public decide they know as much/more about it than the government do. Which maybe true of a small fraction of the people who kicked off, but the majority obviously don't know as much about foreign policy/affairs or war as the people whose job it is to be in the know about foreign affairs/policy and wars.

I think it basically comes down to such:
Which damages us more:
1)Leave it and don't invade, the news gets something to report and people die in the middle east
2)Invade and our citizens die in the war, people in the middle east die from the war, our money is burnt in the gun barrells as our economy collapses, our health system is limited on funding due to the huge money going into the war, many of our citizens die and life qualkity is reduced to all by raised taxes to pay for the war.

Nuclear annihilation? from Iraq?babs wrote:1)... and face the threat of nuclear annhilation.
Would you have been willing to take the chance?
Safety and higher taxes, OR, nuclear annhilation, but stable taxes and an excellent health system.

I am actually laughing so much right now.
