Most people's fear comes from the idea that trying to recreate the forces that existed in the big bang will create the opposite effect, a collapse of the universe. I highly doubt we have the ability to destroy the universe. And all the evidence I've read shows that, though theoretically it is possible for this device to create a black hole, any black hole created by the machine would last less than milliseconds before dissolving. The claims of quasars casting blinding beams of light randomly from the Indian Ocean and then from Quebec and any other random place in the world causing radiation apocalypse preceding a black hole large enough to swallow the planet from the inside out are not substantiated with any evidence.
Neither are the worries that the machine will create a network of atomic sized worm holes that would slowly, over time, dissolve the earth and its people atom by atom substantiated with any scientific evidence.
The worst that can happen is that the whole thing explodes and there's lots of unhappy people on fire in France and Switzerland.

the cosmic rays hitting the earth's atmosphere have at least 10 times more energy... we've survived 4.5billion years of them... i think LHC will be running for about 10?
Also... if we were able to destroy the universe, then why hasn't someone beaten us to it? there are billions of planets in our galaxy alone, millions in habitable zones, water's the second most common molecule in the universe (after H2) and organic matter (any matter with carbon in) is found almost anywhere... and amino acids have been found on asteroids...
there's plenty of chance of aliens out there, the amount that are as intelligent as us depends on how long a society takes to destroy itself... (we already know roughly how long it takes to form)
we'll never contact them though... space is too big...
but, if they're as intelligent as us or more they'll want to find out what's in stuff... and the best way to do that is with particle colliders, so they've probably made much better ones than us

They have no sense of humour either. I made a joke about a hearse blocking traffic and that wasn't particularly well recieved
I was surprised at how everyone was at least vaguely aware of the LHC's existence. However as most of their knowledge either came from BBC News' "like Live & Kicking used to be but with news & sport" Breakfast or GM- calls cost £657.50 per minute from a BT Landline, charges from other networks will vary and from mobiles will be considerably more. Lines close at 11am, do not call after this time as your vote will not be counted but you may still be charged -TV, then their knowledge was distinctly patchy.
