Even my school use linux
Another reason linux hasn't spread too widely into mainstream business would be windows site licenses. Until last month, if you brought a windows site license you would have to pay extra if you want computers with other operating systems on site... That's right, you have to pay windows MORE to use their product LESS? They had to change this last month due to their aforementioned anti-competition court cases with the EU.

Were you saying that to make a point along the lines of "see, everyone uses it"? When I wouldn't be surprised if your school was the only one to use itdr-spangle wrote:Even my school use linux
You're probably the one that got your school to use it. You downloaded it onto every computer, knowing you

Out of all the computers owned by the FTSE 100, I guarantee you there are about 10 running Linux. Same across any exchange. There are companies other than IT companies you know...dr-spangle wrote:Except the masses of businesses I can name from memory that use and or sell linux computers...Guido Zambelis wrote:A very small minority of businesses - almost too small to count.dr-spangle wrote: Many businesses use linux, mainly computer companies and science companies...

Re: I'm a PC...
So what are we arguing again?
If it is what it seems like (do most businesses use Linux?), sorry, Spangle, but they don't. The cutting-edge IT companies like Google do, sure, because they know what they're doing with computers and have the resources to make the switch. But most companies don't/can't.
Although if we're arguing whether we should use Linux on our computers, then I'd say... YES. It's definitely worth the time figuring it out, especially with distros like Ubuntu that are meant to be very user friendly. If you're not a computer person, you really should stick with Windows (or whatever you're using right now), just for simplicity's sake, but otherwise Linux is a far better OS.

our main ICT technician put the Linux computers in, he uses OpenSUSE most the time and used to work at a company that just used linux (Red Hat Enterprise Linux)...
Guido: the FTSE 100 probably runs on linux.
Just checked, Wall Street runs on Red Hat Linux.
Bayen: we're arguing the quality of linux

Re: I'm a PC...
No, Spangle, we are debating as to why you think everyone should use Linux, even though it sucks balls (someone had to be childish over it )
Anyway, using Wall Street as an example as to why we should Linux is just suicide for your "Linux is better" argument, if it was so good, it wouldn't have nearly crashed the market 5 times a day
And CERN has yet to prove a single thing to my knowledge, I haven't bothered checking it since the day :/

Re: I'm a PC...
It's not the computers crashing wall street, it's the greedy millionaires trying to tear every penny out of everything...
And "sunspots" which is an effect whereby a newspaper predicts something such as "OMGWTFBBQ THE ECONOMY IS DIEING WE'LL ALL DIE" and everyone sells tonnes of stock, leading the economy to crash
CERN made plenty of discoveries...
LHC hasn't yet (note, CERN is a company that has existed LONG before the LHC) because a wire burnt out, leading a magnet to fail and the beam to punch through the side of the tube...

Re: I'm a PC...
Spangle, I have a simple test to see if Linux is shit or not.
If Jess says he likes it, then it automatically sucks donkey balls.
If he doesn't like it, then Windows is still better because Bill Gates will assassinate you if you say otherwise.

Jess uses windows.
Case closed, linux has won.
Linus Torvalds would totally beat Bill Gates up in a fight.
Number of eggs and pies thrown at Linus Torvalds: 0
Number of pies thrown at bill gates: >2
Number of eggs thrown at steve ballmer: >3
2 and 3 are just evidence from youtube videos, there is doubtlessly more.

Re: I'm a PC...
Spangle, Bill Gates is waaaaaaay more powerful than Linus Torvalds, so Linux still loses.
Anyway, what has Linux got to offer those that don't like Windows?
Apple is by far more attractive, can support Windows programs, and for someone like myself who does Media, it has much better Media tools, oh and iTunes.

Re: I'm a PC...
Apple is just some KDE
KDE is coming to windows soon...
I'll get some good KDE screenshot...
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/e ... _4.1.2.png
That's the best I can find, It doesn't show how you can add almost anything onto the desktop (like the whole desktop is somewhat like the vista sidebar) you can rotate any icon or applet on the desktop and change it's size...
However, if your PC is a little lower spec or you want something simple, Gnome looks somewhat like this:
http://80.42.27.104/Screenshot.png
The bars can be placed on any side of the screen (same with KDE) and can be any size you want (KDE can do this too), you can have as many bars as you want (I think KDE can do this), and you can have as many different desktops as you want (see the seven rectangles on the top taskbar, one with various windows open, one with firefox, one with opera and the rest empty..
If your PC is even lower spec you can go with fluxbox:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... luxbox.png
or XFCE:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/c ... ce-4.4.png
Or the countless others including minimalist and detailed, even one that completely disables your mouse, for hardcore users.
Linux can run many windows programs through Wine (note, Apple runs windows programs through Cider, which is based on wine) which is a windows "compatability layer". (They keep arguing that they're not an emulator)
There are many media editors for Linux (such as JACK, Hydrogen, Rosegarden, Audacity, Nekobee, Kino, Cinelerra, Luminiera etc), including several entire distributions aimed at making music or videos (such as Ubuntu studio) And there's the fact that Blender was made for Linux, GIMP is the default image editor and Firefox is the default web browser (most the time, some distros use "burning dog", "ice weasle" or other web browsers such as "epiphany" or "Dillo"*
iTunes... hmm... Well Audacity can synchronize an iPod just like iTunes... However if you really want iTunes, it does run fine through wine
*No logical person uses Dillo really... it's rather terrible, but it's very small.

You're arguing for and against multi-billion dollar enterprises. I'm pretty sure they can have their own petty "who's better" arguments. So, seriously, just shut the fuck up and get out more...
