Bushfires in Victoria/NSW
A couple people have asked me so I thought I'd post it here ... no, I live in Queensland and so am not directly in danger from the bushfires (nor are any other Novatainians). But I would ask that you keep those affected in your prayers - its the worst bushfires in history, so far. Also, if anyone can get into contact with Konrad, he lives in that general area and it'd be nice to know he's safe ...

As i said, Konrad was in Natopia within the last 24 hours so he should be alright with any luck.
Re: Bushfires in Victoria/NSW
I am alive and luckily no fires have touched my suburb. The fires did come pretty close, and you could see one of the big Air Cane helicopters dropping water just over the hills.

It was too dry there, wasn't it... But some news services tell that most of fires were caused by... ummm... My translator says it's called arson in English ;p
I think that in such fire-like places there should be a 10m wide and 2m deep hole every 2km of forest / bushes / even grassfields to prevent these fires...

Given that the wind can blow the flames a hell of a long way i don't think the holes would help

But when it doesn't blow - then other "squares" will servive ;p
And it would be easier for rescuing services to get close to fire

*NOTE: That was a Joke! In no way was it supposed to be taken seriously, if it offended you, please refer to Mickey Rourke's BAFTA speech from last night, more specifically the "Fuck" part, and add "You".

Quite, Joris.
Pawel, the wind is what drives the fire, if there was no wind the ditches would be pointless anyway

The smoke plumes are reminiscent of the Hemel Hempstead fire.
Except millions of times larger of course.

Pawel, the manpower needed to make those channels would probably outweigh the manpower needed to put out the fires
also, water would go into them and degrade them, unless you lined them with concrete, in which case, the manpower and money needed to make them would outweigh the manpower and money needed to put out the fires

If people can make huge areas called polders in Netherlands (if you don't know what's this, ask Batavians or Wikipedia ;p )...
