Who needs Russian saints when we have St Guinefort
Re: Happy St George's Day!
There's a mix each of the 73 constituencies elect 1 member through FPTP, same as for Westminster (only theres 1 extra seat because Orkney and Shetland have 1 seat in UK and 1 each in Sco)
There are another 56 seats split into 8 regions each electing 7 members using the following formula:
Regional list votes/(list seats won +1)
Of course it would work better if there was just 1 vote and the formula changed to:
Total votes/(seats won+1)

Our AMS is so much better than FPTP.

And yet all must bow before the might of STV.

STV is a good TV Channel.
But the voting system is rubbish.

Re: Happy St George's Day!
Describe a proportional representation system.
STV is used in Northern Ireland. Nobody really understands it, they might as well just put 50 unionists and 50 nationalists in the Assembly and save money on the election.
This is not an answer that will get you marks in an exam. Stick to factual answers.

"STV is used in countries such as Northern Ireland, Israel and Italy. From this fact I'm sure you can gather that it is shit from the state of all these countries"

AMS is a poor man's FPTP. Its middle-road 'am I proportional, am I not' approach reminds me of the wholly distasteful "policy triangulation" schemes taken on by the major parties these days. I am reminded of the old micronational maxim, "Compromises don't always work."

AMS does work though.
It's actually taking different systems on board and combining them to make one super-dooper one.

Re: Happy St George's Day!
I grant you, it is indeed a mish-mash of the various types, which could have the potential to perform very well. But FPTP "works". Reminds me also of the six counties. Just as the Good Friday Agreement assures that there will likely never be a united Ireland nor will England subjugate the isle again, the seemingly wonderful, agreeable-to-all-parties AMS option will bring a halt to the momentum building up towards the amount of electoral reform needed (which is to say- a truly proportional electoral system), but at the same time prevent a return to FPTP which also "works" if you can term it suchwise.

Yeah. I life the FPTP aspect, but you can make it more representative with the AMS system and keep the FPTP decisiveness. The problem in my eyes is that with FPTP in my constituency, I'd probably vote SNP, not becuase I suport them, but becuase I don't support the Conservatives and I'm forced to vote for Scottish nationalism even though I don't want it, I just don't want the right wing more.
If I get 2 votes, and one for a list seat, the opinion of others doesn't come into it, and I can vote for who I actually support. The list system therefore means that we can have the FPTP decisiveness, but let people choose a percentage of the house which represents true opinion, and I think having the other parties like UKIP in the UK parliament would be beneficial. You just need to make sure the list sets are only 25% of the house or along those lines and you don't cock it all up.
Also, I am of the beleif that nothing "Works" in politics, some things just achieve things suited to more people.

Re: Happy St George's Day!
When you've seen the figures from the last General Election, comparing Lab and LibDem votes won with seats won, you know it's not right.
Re: Happy St George's Day!
And UKIP.
In my exam I almost spat out my imaginary tea when I was analysing the results.
