Re: Online swine flu diagnosis
The thing that gets me about that is that, there are what? 7 Billion people in the world? and 9 of them have died of this.......... 9/7,000,000,000................And it's one stage from a global pandemic?Cairney wrote:One thing that I've noticed is that all over the news it said '154 suspected Swine Flu deaths' when in actual fact theres only 9 confirmed deaths from Swine Flu.

There are 6 billion people
it's two stages from a global pandemic...
your view is somewhat similar to a 1944 view that no one has died in hiroshima from nukes yet, so no one ever will.

No, you round to the squarest number that's closest to the amount in question. Unless you want to look weird...

Re: Online swine flu diagnosis
EITHER WAY A very very very very small percentage of the global population has died, and Spangle, how can you compare a war atrosity to a virus?
And last I heard, WHO had raised it to a Level 5.......on a SIX level stage...
So we're 1 off a global pandemic.

Re: Online swine flu diagnosis
a small percentage of 6-7billion is still bad, if britain were wiped out by an asteroid that would be under 1% but it's still terrible, if even a small city were wiped out by an event it's terrible.
a pandemic doesn't just appear, smash shit up and then disappear instantly. it takes time to build up, evolve and then smash shit up before it slows from vaccienes, cures or a lack of population left to infect.
when did i compare a war to a virus? oh yeah i said about your silly induction that few have died yet so few ever will... we may as well scrap modern tech if we think like that, few have landed on the moon so few ever will, a small percentage of the world has flown in a plane so we may as well scrap planes etc.
The newscientist magazine I was reading said it was level 4, unfortunately published before WHO moved it up to level 5 on the 29th.
either way your silly induction is errornous to say the least.
EDIT: just checked up, the newscientist was published on the 28th.
Swine flu was moved from level 3 to 4 on the 27th and then 4 to 5 on the 29th
bit of a bugger they were in that time window.
Either way, it is better to prepare and have a load of flu vaccienes that can be used to treat pig farmers or old people than to not prepare and have society has we know it have a large kick in the arse
EDIT2:
There have been 20 confirmed deaths and 898 confirmed cases as of right now:

oh shit your going to die.
That's right 0.000000045% of the worlds population are confimed as dead and its suspected that that number could be as high as 0.000000163% Thats only 10x 10x away from 163% YOU ARE GOING TO DIE! Re: Online swine flu diagnosis
I would rather prepare and not die than ignore it and die...
the chance of dieing will be low anyway, but even 1% is 14 people in my school...
It's meant to be human instinct that you assume the worst is in the darkness and run* but apparently we've lost this...
*see it from an evolutionary perspective, an animal is drinking at a water hole at night and hears a sound in the darkness, it has two options, run or stay
run: use up 100 calories, leave the water hole but get a great headstart on a predator if it's there
stay: get more water, die if there is a predator there...
the benefits of preparedness seem to outweigh the negatives of it
EDIT:
Woah shit
just checked some figures
1918 flu had 2.5% fatality rate (where i guessed 1%)
swine flu has 6% fatality rate so far, so early indications say

Spangle, you should probably live in an underground bunker for the rest of your life; just in case
