I Love the NHS
Just before any American here is brainwashed by Sarah Palin and the rest of the right wing nut-jobs the NHS is one of the best things to come out of our fair country. It isn't evil, doesn't breed terrorists and Stephen Hawking is British so has been treated by the NHS. If you don't want socialist medicine then why do you have socialist policemen, firemen, postmen, soldiers etc.
Re: I Love the NHS
Yeah.. what is all this saying they're thinking of getting rid of the NHS?.. I was having a short discussion about it with Nick the other day.. as the NHS provides free healthcare, but perhaps its not as good quality as the medical care in America, who charge bloody $75 dollars for a damned check-up. I think we should definately keep the NHS.. I mean, what would we rather do? Be afraid to go get checked out because it might put us in debt if we go too often and if there /is something wrong let it get slowly worse, or definately know what we've got but not get /as/ good quality care as America do? Funny how things usually end up being a choice between money or standard. >.>..<.<.. its the same with every other argument lol.

Re: I Love the NHS
They must be confusing scrutiny of an inefficient system with disapproval of an concept at a fundamental level. The NHS is invaluable. American politics are much more screwed up than ours; let them hurt their own people on an ideological basis if they want, but so long as this ridiculousness doesn't have too much of an impact on Britain, who cares?shadowbladeprime wrote:Just before any American here is brainwashed by Sarah Palin and the rest of the right wing nut-jobs the NHS is one of the best things to come out of our fair country. The Americans have this ridiculous hangover- from McCarthyism, presumably- in which any kind of aid to a fellow countryman without substantial financial gain must be Police-State Stalinism.
Free healthcare should be a right, not a privelege- on an ideological level the NHS is great, but at the moment it's not working too well, to be fair... Obama's finally on the right track in the US though.

The battle over national healthcare coverage has been going on, off and on, since the 1950s.

I already submitted my application to serve on a Death Panel.

This is why I can't stand American politics. It's immature and based on irrationality.

The fact that a guy whos only apparently advantage was having been in a war nearly got as many votes as a guy who actually wanted to fix things still astounds me
and the fact that bush stayed in 8 years is astounding

I blame McCarthy. Before him America had a Progressive Party. People had reason before him. I wish we could get rid of all irrational people from politics or at least get rid of all those who feed off of irrationality.

Demagoguery and political activity unfortunately go hand in hand.

Re: I Love the NHS
No one in America even talks about McCarthy...
Re: I Love the NHS
And if you think that that means that there is no effect from McCarthyism you are very nieve
Re: I Love the NHS
Indeed. MacCarthy's shadow over American politics still is cast. All I ever see is people being branded as communists if they do anything remotely left wing. It of course irritates someone who is a big supporter of Social Democracy.
Also, I don't understand why you brand Social Democrats "liberals" in America as most the people doing the branding are followers of Classical Liberalism.

Re: I Love the NHS
Realistically I think it's fair to say that both the American healthcare system and the NHS are tolerably effective in certain areas but contain some quite staggering structural flaws. Both systems are the products of their development over time and neither is particularly recommendable as a model for a Health Care scheme starting from scratch.
