Just out of interest...
For my photography project, I have to interpret various images and some of them are just so.. open to interpretation its silly. So, I wonder if what I've interpreted for one of these is similar at all to what you would write.. I don't need long winded explanations.. just perhaps some bullet points saying 'well, this looks like it could represent that.. and perhaps that links in with that' and so on.. I won't use any of it.. I just am quite interested as to how far the interpretations could lead.. lol
Heres the image:

Some quick facts:
- The artist is 'Rodchenko'
- Its a photomontage, which basically means he takes (many) other peoples work, cuts it up and re-arranges for his own representation.
- Both tanks/military vehicles (bottom right) and the woman in the left hand corner occur fairly regularly throughout other pieces of his work
- If you know nothing about photography, aparantly if you notice any 'imaginary lines' that seem to run through the picture, they count (?)
I hope to get some.. interesting replies =D.. and I'll probably post mine up afterwards for comparison. Have fun? =P

The wheel of progress?
Humans acting like lemmings?
Rising to the top only to fall down?

Closely related to Dada, therefore anti-aesthetic. I'd like to know if the people and buildings are identifiable, that would shed some light on his meaning, since dada/constructivism was focused on ideas and social commentary rather than "being art." Possibly pro-bolshevik imagery (the repeated use of tanks may refer to Russian military power and the power of the revolution). The figure atop the onion dome is posed like christ, so identifying him is important, could be a top party official? Or perhaps a martyred revolutionary? The women might be a commentary on the role of women in Russia at the time, I have little russian history but usually women are targeted by propaganda as essential to the national struggle, either as baby/soldier/labor makers, or on the homefront, all that stuff. A little internet research says the revolution offered new opportunities for women, so women coupled with the tanks might be an endorsement of the party's domestic and foreign achievements.

Hmmm.. interesting..
well, seems as I said I would (though I'm unsure if I'll post it.. incase of copywright issues for exams) but my points about it were:
- Heavy religious content due to the guy in the crucifix position
- Guns suggesting religious war or the people sins shooting down religion, as according to christians jesus died for our sins
- The children moving slowly towards the firing line, suggesting that what we're doing now (perhaps the argument over religion) that the image presents is harming the future generations
- The imaginary lines I mentioned run through the image, forming a cross
- tyre and plane representing modern technology.. but it didn't fit into the story I was trying to create about it.. so didn't mention it much =P
-The 'jesus-like' man is on top of a tower, which is much higher than the gathering of people, suggesting the importance of him. Also, the people seem to be looking up at him.
Think thats most of the points I got.. not knowing much Russian history, I mainly left out a lot about Russia.. but I did hover over a russian war on anothere of the images I was analysing..
But yeah.. your replies are all quite interesting =] thanks
