Unlimited! now defined as 3GB.
I've just had an email from my hosting (with bluehost, woo) that apparently my unlimited storage and 100 databases means nothing, I'm apparently using too much...
The unspoken limit for the unlimited storage on mysql databases is apparently 3GB, and I have 3.9GB...
So basically I have to download a load of mysql databases and try and put them on hallo, my home server, the really slow one, so yeah, I'm going to be moving the archive stuff.
Which of course means in the future:
- archive stuff will be on my home server, dr-spangle.is-a-geek.com, not on dr-spangle.com
- archived stuff will be painfully slow to access due to an ISP imposed 100kb/s upload limit (and various file transfers taking up most of that)
- I'm going to spend ages hacking my way through manuals on how to install mysql on my home server and if you know anything about mysql installation you're likely to be asked questions
- My annoyance at bluehost shall increase (see previous incidents such as: "you're not allowed to backup anything to your account" (in fact, after just checking the ToS, they can shut down my account for having log files, but they set error logs by default? , also oddly, this rule came into place soon after they started offering an extra paid feature to backup your data...) and "that exploit is no problem of ours, so what if it's infected 70% of the sites we host including our CEO's blog, we're not gonna help you.")
- My annoyance at tiscali or whoever owns them shall increase a little (if my upload weren't capped at 100kb/s I could run all my hosting from my laptopserver, apparently it would be more powerful than the servers at bluehost, it can store more than 3GB )
Of course, I'll still be offering free hosting to everything and everyone, but I'll be glaring at bluehost while doing it...

Factuality: This is what has happened, although my annoyance may cause inaccuracies in the information about previous events
Opinions: It's an opinion that this is annoying.
Joking: Not a lot
Emotion:
Spelling & Grammar: Not great
Research Sources: My emails from them telling me to delete databases or be shut down in 14 days

I've installed MySQL on Ubuntu many, many times, although my lack of ability to explain things coherently and general lack of enthusiasm for most things renders me useless, as usual .

Re: Unlimited! now defined as 3GB.
I've installed it on ubuntu, that's like tick a box done.
Worst case scenario it's 3 commands in command line.
Arch linux is more difficult, with no GUI to guide you and a general hatred of human users, it makes it difficult.
[POSTBOX]
Factuality: I too have installed it on ubuntu many times, and on fedora, and on windows, and on mac and a couple times on arch linux, but that was all about a year ago.
Opinions: It's an opinion that arch linux is more difficult, but i think most people see the higher difficulty rating of hacking their way through error messages compared to ticking a checkbox.
Joking: It's a joke that arch linux hates humans, there hasn't been conclusive proof (to a 95% accuracy level at least)
Emotion:
Spelling & Grammar: 100%?

This means... you will... like... compile it from sources?
Using COMMAND LINE?!
I could help, if my only MySQL installations weren't on Ubuntu from Repo, from YaST on OpenSUSE and with XAMPP on Windows... Anyway, you're always welcome to ask me questions, maybe I'll be more successful in finding the answer on the Net

Last few times I've done it without GNOME (i.e. without the gui). As long as the commands are the same, all you do is apt-get and install the latest versions of MySQL and phpMyAdmin. But in all seriousness, GIYF.

Re: Unlimited! now defined as 3GB.
I already had mysql mostly installed on hallo, but it broke about a year ago and I never got around to actually fixing it
But I managed to get it mostly running now by setting the permissions of various stuffs to various settings and having to try a large number of passwords to try and get into my root mysql account* (after having to try and remember my root server password, something I haven't used in many months, I knew various small parts of it, tried them and it worked, which was lucky.)
The only remaining problem is if I tell mysql to stop, it crashes, but I never need to tell it to stop and it gets the job done anyway
And of course, arch linux doesn't come with apt-get, I'm not sure what it uses, but luckily it's not compile from sources... *{popular-search-engine}s*... It uses pacman...
I did actually {popular-search-engine} how to fix it, but had no info on why it was not working to go on, it wasn't writing to the error logs, turns out the permissions on the error logs was wrong, and that's one of the reasons it wouldn't work
*How did I manage to guess a string of random characters which is my mysql root password, you don't really ask but i shall pretend you do, that's thanks to this thing: http://dr-spangle.is-a-geek.com/mnlinkmap/auto/
The linkmap, the only thing on my home server using mysql, after much trying of random passwords I remembered it's existence and the config files held the passwords! My laziness in upgrading the linkmap to the glowing red rectangle saved the day!

Factuality: This is the story as it happened, you could ask my friends from my maths lectures who were regaled with this story live while it unfolded, despite not really caring about it, at all.
Opinions: Lot of opinions in here, any mention of good, lucky, etc are opinions
Joking: Is it a joke to say {popular-search-engine} instead of google (obviously either way it's unfunny) but that's how google wants us to write things, because they can lose trademark if you use google's name as a verb
Emotion:
Spelling & Grammar: Not great, lot less fullstops than are needed and sentence structure might be just about readable, spelling should be 100% though.

Re: Unlimited! now defined as 3GB.
Spangle,
Anytime as I type a Norse character/letter such as ø, ð, æ or å on a StorWiki page and then attempt to save the page I get an error message. Although those letter are not unicode, they are within the web-safe 0x21-0xFF.
On top of that I discovered that at certain pages such as this one or this one any edit results in an error message.
Is there a way you could fix this problem? Please find below the error message I get.

Re: Unlimited! now defined as 3GB.
I've just had a minor revelation regarding this problem. Some time ago I was playing around with CO.CC's ability to register domains with Unicode chars. But for some strange reason, it wouldn't recognize the ø and ö I tried inputting. I think this may be a similar problem. This here is the ASCII (or web-safe) character code list. If what your keyboard driver, browser or other regionalization features is inputting doesn't match that range (providing the MediaWiki installation is currently set up only to recognize the ASCII range), there could be some problems. Just as an example, if your computer puts ø down as 0x0100 for whatever reason, that is beyond the ASCII range your installation is set up to recognize. Now, the characters you are using ARE within this range, however, I notice this problem with international format keyboards. Also, from the look of the error, your browser may be using a character format the MediaWiki isn't set up to understand (ASCII is pretty rigid). The semicolon (:hexidecimal number:) format is usually used for full UTF-x text, and again, if it is set up for ASCII, it wants &#decimalnumber. I may be completely wrong about it, but this seems like the problem to me.

Re: Unlimited! now defined as 3GB.
Ah, I see your problem, the code is broken.
It's nothing to do with your browser or keyboard or drivers or whatever, the file it's trying to include is broken, as suggested by the "Unexpected character in file" error message...
It looks like the file broke back when that exploit happened on my server, the file might have broken when i was fixing the exploit, because I'm silly and didn't save it in the right format.
After much hacking about, finding the broken file, finding the php file that fixes it, and then eventually discovering you run something else to make that php file run properly, and then editing the php file to stop it warning me that I should be running it from command line (I was running it from command line), I finally got it working again.
Tested an edit with the second page you said, even tested by adding all those letters you said failed, and it all seems to work perfectly again, I'm so sorry for the problem, if it happens again tell me and I'll try and fix it ASAP (Next time I might know what I'm doing! )
[POSTBOX]
Factuality: The code was saved in the wrong encoding, and all the special characters died as a result (evidently no plot armour), my steps to fix it are as described.
Opinions: Me being silly is an opinion, the idea that it might have broken due to the exploit is an opinion, but that would mean it broke months ago?
Joking: The plot armour thing in the factuality section of this was a joke, it refers to how in TV shows or movies, the special characters never die, no matter how much is shot at them, they have plot armour, bullets will always miss.
Emotion:
Spelling & Grammar: 100%? Sentence structure may be too bad for 100%...

2) This thing alerted me to the existence of the Makefile I had to run: http://code.google.com/p/wikia/source/b ... efile?r=10
3) This was the broken file, but it'll come up with a 403 error, amusingly styled like HAL9000: http://dr-spangle.com/stormark/wiki/inc ... alData.inc
