*decides not to mention the Gralan discussions on aiding their allies that have already taken place*

“Okay! When the helicopters return get them rearmed and fuelled ASAP and back into the air. Those lumps of crap might still be floating after the first volley and if they are then stick another one in, got it?†Admiral Jameson barked as men bustled past him as they around the various stations in the superstructure. “The missiles are radar guided and lock onto the target before being fired so we should get them regardless of decoys, but it’s what they can still do afterwards that worries me†the Admiral told the room at large. It was too late for further contemplation however when a shout of “Missiles away!†came from the nearby radar operator, all preparations had been made and now the waiting began.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The wait was also on in Lannion. The survivors spent a terrifying night watching the flames of the fire dance in the night sky outside the Cathedral de Joan de Arc’s stained glass windows. The distant screams of pain had long since subsided and now only the creaking of buildings giving way and the crackling of the ferocious fire could be heard above the low murmur of prayer as the monks of the Orders of the Holy Dance & Golden Lion led a mass to the saint of the cathedral to save them. The fires burnt still in the wooden city of Lannion as night began to fade and after what seemed like an eternity the light of day flooded through the windows of the minster, illuminating the scenes from Bosworth’s history which had been preserved forever in glorious stained glass as a tribute to the resolve of the nation.
Eventually it was deemed safe to open the huge wooden doors of the south tower and as two hooded monks did so it seemed to the massed citizens of the city that they threw open the gates of hell. The ornate carved archway of entrance framed a scene of devastation, a world of ash and flame viewed through a choking black smoke greeted the eyes of those who stepped forward and the townsfolk wept for their lost possession and the dead but also for their salvation. More survivors had seemingly fled through the city gates and a distance mass of people could be seen in the distant meadows through the haze. Seeing this and fearing further attacks the Abbot resolved to lead people from the cathedral out into the relative safety of the countryside and so it was that in the light of the early morning sun the survivors in the meadows glimpsed a speck of distant golden light in the city through the smoke.
The golden crucifix glowed in the light of the sun as the Abbot held it aloft in the doorway of the cathedral before proceeding out into the ruins of the city. A long line of people followed as the Abbot proceeded onto the main street which led from the city gates to the cathedral and, with his collar pulled up to try and minimise his soot inhalation, began the march down the sloping road which had previously been flanked by high buildings and now seemed to run across a volcanic plain. Charred, unrecognisable bodies littered the ground as the survivors rushed, coughing and splitting as they inhaled ash, towards the towering gates of the walls. Soon the Abbot’s crucifix (which he still held aloft) was framed by the arch of the gate which stood below the flowing fabric of the Royal Colours, their golden lions and fleur-de-lis still glittering and flying free, and the citizens of Lannion rushed out onto the plains beyond. When the survivors had been counted by the monks and the figures calculated the Abbot wept at the loss which had been inflicted upon his flock, for there on the plains stood but two thousand people and inside the city walls lay 28,000.
Summary: Sea Skua missiles are locked on with radar before firing and so are unlikely to be effected by decoys. Helicopters to rearm aboard the Holton before attacking again if need be. Fires in Lannion burn themselves out in the early hours of the next day, 28,000 civilians dead.

I would interpret that therefore as meaning that the chaff (dense clouds of aluminium foil) would reflect back the illuminating radar pulses from the helicopters and thus be effectively decoyed either into premature detonation or much reduced accuracy with a comensurate increase in survivability for the Sparta and the Brutus now pumping salvo after salvo in the direction of the Holton. The missile flies at high subsonic speed over ranges of 15.5 miles (25 km). It can be set to travel at one of four pre-selected heights, depending on the surface conditions. Near the target the missile climbs in altitude to a height where it can "acquire" the target. The Sea Skua has semi-active radar guidance; the launching helicopter illuminates the target with its radar (originally the specially developed Ferranti Seaspray in the case of the Lynx), and the missile's homing head homes in on the reflected energy.

"This is it. Shirithian ships have been attacked by Bosworth. The Kaiser has declared war", announced Captain O'Keefe over the P.A. system. "No gambling junket this time. Pull up the fishing gear. All anti-aircraft systems to full alert, engage autofire systems. Maintain AWACS patrol, rotate the helicopters as needed."
Turning to his Exec, the Captain saw tears in her eyes. "We new this day would come, Number One."
"I know, Captain. Willie was with the Duke's task force, and something tells me he is dead. They fired on our ships. Those people will pay. They deserve this!"
"Carry out your task, Number One."
"Aye, Sir."
"Main Batteries, commence firing, full radar guided mode."
Broadsides of 12" and 5" shells began falling on the hapless folk of Lannion and the country around.
