MNN Forum Archive
Thanks to Iain sending me a forum backup and a few days messing around trying to make it happy on a default SMF installation I have managed to get an MNN Archive up and running!
http://dr-spangle.com/MNNarchive/
I'm working on an install so that we can distribute the backup to prevent losses
All passwords are MD5 encrypted anyway but I've change all the hashes to something like "324brgtt" or something random... then no one will be able to log in as it's not a valid MD5

A bit selfish of him. He wasn't the only one around on that forum.dr-spangle wrote:Well, Liam said to remove it (possibly for now, possible for ever, god knows)

Re: MNN Forum Archive
Before you jump to conclusions about motives, Jonas, you should know that the reason Spangle was told to remove it is because he wasn't properly granted a license to host or distribute MN.net content. A majority of the co-ownership of MN.net granted no such license, therefore Spangle had no right to be hosting our forum archive. It's a matter of respecting the collective rights of the entire co-ownership. The MN.net forums will be restored in a future location dictated by the co-ownership so that an archive exists. That location, however, will not likely be on Spangle's server, especially considering his poor history with MN.net, specifically his attempt to break into forum administrator accounts last year (a totally separate incident from the hacking of our website by his colleague - just had to state that because I know someone here is going to erroneously think I'm talking about the website incident when I mention Spangle's history at MN.net).

I vaguely remember that one (it's spelt Veggie)

Jess, when it comes to proprietary/intellectual property in this world, the rights of the owner trumps the rights of the public. This is the reality of the world. It's not selfish, it's due process; though at 13 years, you're still too young to truly understand this difference. MN.net's co-owners will collectively decide how to disseminate our content for archival purposes; it is a right that we are the only people entitled to exercise. If you don't like this, I suggest you build a rocket and blast off to another planet where you can avoid the realities of the world.

Re: MNN Forum Archive
Alright, Liam. But I think it's more then fair that those who posted on the MNN.net-forum have acces. Afterall, they were it who posted the messages and brought activity. They published their news, ideas, and even stories on the forum. And it would be selfish if they wouldn't have the chance get those back. It aren't only the owners who 'made' the forum and its contents, it was the whole community.
But if it's true what you told here, about restoring the archive, then I can't complain. I can only hope that it happens in the near future.

Re: MNN Forum Archive
It's a bit childish to be honest. Everyone with half a brain acknowledges the fact that the co-ownership of the MNN alone has the right to choose when (if ever) and where the forum archives are hosted, but does that really matter, at all? At the moment someone has offered to host the archive and has done so successfully, and you have forced him to remove it. That's fine. Or it would be fine if you had organised somewhere else to host it. Right now, everyone who wants access to that archive (and I imagine there are a few who do) is one forum down for no good reason at all other than all the co-ownership didn't approve.

Re: MNN Forum Archive
Benkern, there is somewhere else readily available to host it, and that location will not cause the problem associated with having Spangle hosting our content. That location has been put to the rest of the co-ownership for discussion. The only delay, other than getting the go ahead to use the location, is working the restoral into my macronational schedule so that I can provide an archive online at that location.
Re: MNN Forum Archive
I take it you'll be asking for approval from everyone who ever posted then? Seeing as there posts remain their intellectual property.
Alternatively you could just stop being so ridiculous and taking yourself so damn seriously all the time.
