TREASURER RESIGNS
CABINET HALL, NAFTICON -- Historic Treasury Minister Vasroe has announced his resignation after several weeks of searching for a deputy and successor. The Treasurer has been at the forefront of economic development in Antica since the Commonwealth period but now cites focusing on real-life obligations as the reason for his departure from office. While Vasroe's actions and comments before his announcement did indicate that he would be stepping down soon, the announcement abruptly came two days after the official release of the AntiBank 2.0, the online National Bank of the Republic designed by Vasroe.
Vasroe's intermittent tenure as Treasury Minister was as controversial as it was long (see Newsbite #2, 'Fee Scandal Minister pays the cost') but his contributions to the Republic in that post will not soon be forgotten. While Vasroe did put unprecedented effort into developing the Bank as well as encouraging wages and government fees, his plans were always cut short by opposition of the Assembly. The final piece of economic legislation debated during his time in office, the Asset Tax Act to establish an 8% asset tax on all private citizen accounts in the AntiBank, does not look set to pass and is currently sitting at Four Nays to Two Yeas with no abstentions.
There are still questions as to which citizen, if any, will be his successor in the post of Treasury Minister. In his announcement, he put forward Phineas Elastopon and Malliki as candidates, but neither have stepped forward or been confirmed by the Assembly as yet.
THE INQUISITOR LEAVES JUDICIAL BRANCH
THE ASSEMBLY, NAFTICON -- Phineas Elastopon has announced his resignation as Inquisitor-General of the College of Inquisitors and awaits Assembly acceptance and confirmation of his resignation and successor. While he stated his intention to resign only from the post of Inquisitor-General and will remain in the College as an ordinary Inquisitor, he also announced that he would not be running for a judicial position at the next elections, scheduled for mid-February this year.
Elastopon, alias Benkern, has been Inquisitor in Antica since the creation of the post in November 2008. He oversaw the establishment of a Law Code to regulate civil and criminal offences and, more recently, spearheaded reforms of the Judiciary establishing the College of Inquisitors. He designated his successor to be fellow Inquisitor Malliki, though Malliki himself has yet to accept the post and the Assembly has yet to take a vote on the matter.
STEPS TAKEN TO CONCLUDE PERIOD OF REFORM
THE ASSEMBLY, NAFTICON -- The era of extensive governmental reform that has lasted since the foundation of the second Antican Republic in May, 2009, is being brought to an end at last in the form of legislation firmly establishing the roles of the Archon and the Speaker. The Archon Octavius, who was awarded the Micronational FNORD Award for Leadership earlier this month, introduced a point of discussion onto the Assembly floor simply entitled "Head of State / Head of Government."
Though the question of who is Head of State and who is Head of Government may sound like both something that should have been worked out with the Constitution and something that is not important, in fact the two terms are part of a much larger conflict between the offices of Archon and Speaker. A lack of clear, concise delegation of responsibilty in the constitution led to some confusion over which of the two Great Offices of State was to do what. The legislation to combat this issue, taking the form of both an amendment to the constitution and an act to give the Speaker's powers over Cabinet to the Archon, is soon to be voted on by the Assembly.
SOCIALIST PARTY OF ANTICA COLLAPSES
THE DINER, NAFTICON -- The Socialist Party of Antica, the latest partisan endeavour embarked upon by citizens of the Republic, has come to a de facto end as two of its three members have abandoned it. Phineas Elastopon departed, suggesting unity was now important in Antica and partisan politics did not accomodate this, and was followed by Vasroe, who cited a lack of party cohesion as the reason for his departure, manifest in the lack of party support for his Asset Tax legislation. Founder of the party, Malliki, remains a nominal member, while Elastopon returns to his independence support group and Vasroe to partisan wilderness.
AND FINALLY...
OLORIX SQUARE, NAFTICON -- "What is better than Mario Brothers or Tetris?" asks Archon Octavius. The answer?
