I don't think we're going to be too focused on the finer points of cultural development, so the specifics don't really matter I guess?

Not really. From my previous experience with micronations, I have found that a Wiki or similar sort of central for data on nations is a good way to develop culture and keep it orderly. We should consider having one of those.

I'm going to go with "Taifa Kushindwa", Kiswahili for "failed state" (I'm fairly confident on the translation, but welcome corrections!).
Re: Gauging interest for puny micronation
Google says Alishindwa Hali, but then again, machine translators aren't the smartest

It would be interesting to base the project on the current state of affairs in Somalia ~ e.g. complete decentralization of government, regional autonomy/secession, inability of a central government to exert power over any meaningful area of the state, piracy, and foreign incursions. By the last item on that list, it may prove interesting to involve some other nations to fill the slot of willing target and play the requisite part, knowing full well the consequences beforehand (so as to avoid conflict when one of their tankers is hijacked).

I like the idea, but to have the simulation cover as many topics as possible, I think we should keep the complete disorder to just a part of the nation. Nothing goes against that part being covered by rebels and pirates.Ryan wrote:It would be interesting to base the project on the current state of affairs in Somalia ~ e.g. complete decentralization of government, regional autonomy/secession, inability of a central government to exert power over any meaningful area of the state, piracy, and foreign incursions. And I agree that it is essential that we organize some RP with other MNs, and rebels from our country is a great catalysator for intermicronational conflict, as well as internal conflict.

Sounds similar to the way Talamthom was set up (if you were around for that).
That said, so we're all on the same page, I suggest we all use the same translator. Presently I'm using this one, which seems to give me similar results to what Guido is using.
Also, for a name, I would suggest something with a little more depth than simply "failed nation". It gives a little more credence to story-writing to have something with actual meaning to it. With this in mind, I went through and came up with a few ideas:
Juanchi = Sunny Land (from jua + nchi)
Juabara = Sunny Land (from jua + bara)
Vumbinchi = Dusty Land (from vumbi + nchi)
Vumbara = Dusty Land (from vumbi + bara)
Pangobar = Cave Land (from pango + bara)
Kisimaeupe = Well of Light (from kisima + eupe)
Ngaoeupe = Shield of Light (ngao + eupe)
The names are based on words associated with the purported etymology of Africa. Thus narrowed, you have three words; sunny, cave, and dusty. Light can be equated with the sun, so I threw a few names including that into the mix. Bara/bar is a common word used in place-names (e.g. Zanzibar), as opposed to nchi, which seems much less predominant. The last two name suggestions are more artistic, and could certainly be better utilized for creating a backstory and setting for the nation.

Great research!
My personal favourite is Juabara. I'd say we should go for something like "Democratic Republic of Juabara" for the full name

Ryan, when I was trying and failing to think of a name I just knew that you would come along and do so much better! Thank you very much!

I think you just described Cerulea =P. Which happens to belong to you. But if there is going to be an African nation I'm in.Peter Ulsnes wrote:Inspired by the thread on inactivity in our sector, I came to think of a project that I got the idea for a year ago or so.
The basic premise is a micronation that is poor, low-tech and in a lot of internal strife - inspired by the situation occurring in something like one quarter of the nations that actually exist.
What I'd like to see, is if there are any people actually willing to participate in (and lead, since I don't have a lot of time) such a project.
Some things that I hope this micronation would come to feature:
1. Lots of RP, to emphasise internal strife and corruption.
2. Some sort of system of economics, either internal or among several micronations. This would serve to emphasize poverty.
3. In-character bad relations to a lot of other micronations, to create some conflict for the nation itself and other nations to RP on.
4. Well-developed culture and history, to emphasize that despite all the "shitty" features, a micronation can still be awesome.
*crosses fingers*

Re: Gauging interest for puny micronation
Well, as I have insinuated earlier in the thread, I do not consider this Juabara "my" nation, since I wouldn't have the time to be a leader of such a project at this time - because of school and because I already have Normark to care about.Einhorn wrote:
