Hi, me (yet) again
I'm back. Again. Hopefully this time for longer. So for those who don't know me, which is probably most of you, read this. Why am I here again? Because I blocked myself for a week over at MicroWiki because I have exams in the next week and there's some scandal about how I supposedly manipulated the community or whatever, despite there being absolutely no evidence to support such a claim and I having never done anything like that. Yeah, MicroWiki's retarded. Ask Fishy if you don't believe me.
So, anyway, I've gotten sick of MicroWiki (yet again) and I've temporarily decided to set up base here, as I said I would back in late June but never actually did anything about it apart from make a claim. Two and a bit months later and here I am, finally ready to make good on that promise. But... I honestly haven't a clue what to do here. So, ummm, what exactly do you guys do over here in Micras? I mean, no offence, you're not extremely active (though I suppose in some ways that's a good thing) and I can't really see anything of interest just glancing at the new posts since my last visit except for a few fantasy sports, none of which really appeal to me. As you're no doubt aware, most people over at MicroWiki have this viewpoint of you all just being a bunch of fantasy people who run fantasy micronations (well, most of them consider you geofiction) and do fantasy things. Of course, I'm not quite so narrow-minded and don't believe any of that but after looking at the forum, I'm completely lost as to what you actually do do here. So, prove a MicroWiki kid wrong.

Re: Hi, me (yet) again
Well, the main difference between here and MicroWiki is that not everything is done on one forum - the vast majority of nations here have their own websites and forums where all of there stuff gets done; here's just a melting pot of international discussion and home to a few other organisations (MCS, FMF, etc)
As for what we do, the most precise and concise answer I could possibly ever give you is: anything! There's no real limitations to what you can do or join. Internally, you can write backstories about things which have "happened", or even write reviews about pretty much any aspect of your nation (if it's unique to your nation, the likelihood is that you can get a pretty lengthy post/article/both about it). If you want some really good examples of what certain nations have produced over the past year or so, you should take a look through the World Expo archives over at the Bastion. While you're there, that site's also home to six of the oldest and/or most popular nations in the community, so you can have a snoop around at what's going-on there for some inspiration, if needs be!
Hope that helps, before the thread turns into an "advertise one's nation" competition

Re: Hi, me (yet) again
Which nations are those? I've forgotten, can you link me to them?
Re: Hi, me (yet) again
Craitman's got it right when he says that this place is mostly an intersection, which is what I like about it. If your micronation, and all that you do in it, is a circle the Hub is sort of the grey area in the middle of the venn diagram. In the news section you can read about what people are doing 'abroad' without having to hunt down and open up a dozen forums every day, the discussion area is a place where you can hash out inter-micronational stuff or (even better) run past things you're doing in your own nation past others and gather their input. That's what I do the most, I use this place and the expertise and experience a lot of these guys have as a sounding board for projects I'm working on.
For instance, I didn't realize GIMP could remove the background and make an image selectively tranparent just like Photoshop could. That's great to know, especially if you've no interest in paying an arm and a leg for Photoshop (or don't want to pirate it.) I would never have known that if I hadn't started talking about how I make my maps. Someone idly reading that particular thread who has neither program now has multiple options to use that would have been unkown to him had that discussion not taken place.
An aside: Shamless plug's already in the signature.

Re: Hi, me (yet) again
Hey there. I'm another MicroWikier, and an associate of Aldrich here you'd say. To summarize my thoughts on MicroWiki briefly: I've gotten so sick of it and resigned from my admin position.
There's been... controversy, there, recently, and it's gone to show me that micronationalism isn't fun at all when things are taken so seriously, in the way they are. People being rude to each other... etc. It's lost meaning to me. It's simply become a load of stress on me that I can't handle. I don't care whether micras is "micronationalism", "geofiction", or whatever. I just know that what you're doing here, is what I want to be doing.
Essentially, I have the same questions as Aldrich.
And... I do hope that I can get a clean start here, if all of you let me.

Clean slate is easy, trying to quickly encapsulate the nebulous nature of the Hub is harder. I think you'll be best if you think of it as a hang out for the elite, like a VIP lounge for the self important. Our peoples and populace may be doing what they are doing in their own little (simulationist / geofictional / fantasy - watever) world, but this is where the big boys go to mingle.

And the simulationist, geofictional, fantasy, or whatever, is a lot more sane. From what I've seen, those on Micras seem very friendly. Tiana has gotten into a high position of influence on MicroWiki at some point, but really, they get nothing done there.King Ailin of Uantir wrote:Clean slate is easy, trying to quickly encapsulate the nebulous nature of the Hub is harder. What I'm looking for is something to be a realistic simulation of international politics that Tiana can partake in.

Most of the international politics for this crowd happen on people's individual forums. I don't know of a single national forum that doesn't have a foreign affairs style office of some sort. Uantir's is called the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, others call it the Department of Foreign Affairs, Alexandria calls it the Hall of Mirros (not sure why,) Craitland has the Foreign Relations threads.
It's in these areas that most of the treaty deals and other such stuff usually happens. Outside of that, for economics, there's the SCUE if you're into that sort of thing (I can't be that big a hater if I promote it now can I Einhorn?) Beyond that, what exactly are you looking for, politically?

Re: Hi, me (yet) again
Pretty much what you describe. What I know of Micras... the aim of it is different from most MicroWiki nations. And much closer to what we really wish to be.King Ailin of Uantir wrote:Most of the international politics for this crowd happen on people's individual forums. Secessionism is nice and all, but I'm sure that micras is a better community for Tiana.
We should establish a new forum soon, hopefully.

Re: Hi, me (yet) again
Once you do, post the link. You wont get a tidal wave of people coming to say Hi though. The jaded truth is that new nations come and go and the smallest percentage stick around for a while. It's exhausting to start a rapport with a new nation only to have them disappear. So in the mean time, while you're setting up your forum (there's no rush, so take your time, make it look and work just like you want it to) check out other people's. It works to give you ideas, and if you actually post on behalf of Tiana you can have the political gears turning before you ever get your forum up and running. I speak only for myself here, but I doubt it's different for most other people, we won't begrudge you not having a forum initially. It's a requirement for land on Micras (usually) but in truth, until you've stuck around a bit, it takes the pressure off me. I don't have to go to your forum, build up my account so it's got the proper avatar and signature etc., and then get pissed when you* disappear.

Re: Hi, me (yet) again
So basically Micras, and the Hub, is for people who've grown out of claiming their back gardens (I don't mean that in a dickish way at all, it's exactly how I started, as did a lot of people here!) and are looking for something a bit more simulationist.
As everyone else has said, go ahead, try it out! Unless you're a substantive dick (ie you do dickish things for the sake of doing them) then you (vous) should get along just fine with us!

Welcome, both to Lucas and Puglisi (didn't expect that, huh Guido?). I'm not a fan of MicroWiki, as most people here know, but I welcome any and all refugees. You should take a look at the Bastion Union, which is not a union at all. We are seven fully independent micronations that just happen to share one forum. You should also check out the Micras Treaty Organisation, an intermicronational organisation for Micras nations, with members ranging from A1 to Stormark.

My thoughts exactly. Tiana's main sector is going to change, I think.Guido Zambelis wrote:So basically Micras, and the Hub, is for people who've grown out of claiming their back gardens (I don't mean that in a dickish way at all, it's exactly how I started, as did a lot of people here!) and are looking for something a bit more simulationist.
Well, no, that's the thing. I'm leaving MicroWiki because I'm not a fan of it myself anymore.Malliki Tosha wrote:Welcome, both to Lucas and Puglisi (didn't expect that, huh Guido?). Tiana's old forum is a bit... outdated. We're going to get a new one and start running things differently sometime.

Re: Hi, me (yet) again
Thanks for all the replies. At the moment, I've got exams to study for but once they're done in a week's time, I'll try to get more actively involved.
