Re: How to claim
Hmmm... Has the seismology of Micras ever been defined? If not, who says new islands can't be created due to vulcanic activity? (Not that we've got any plans in that direction; I wouldn't even be in favour of that being allowed by the MCS. But it wouldn't strike me as undermining me - granted, geographically chalenged - as undermining the realism of the project. The problem of course being that you can't just allow anybody to claim there's been a gigantic submarine vulcano eroption near his coastline, creating an entire new continent...)

Re: How to claim
Micras' tectonics have unfortunately never been properly defined, but even if they had, the islands which volcanic eruptions could create would be too small to appear on the map as they'd not be as large as one pixel's worth and would also probably be too explosive to be inhabitable
We did have a mystery island (called the Isle of Sago) appear back when Pete was AdminGen, however, but it only last a few maps as it was eroded away to save too much arguing - but it was still unrealistically large for its kind

Re: How to claim
That was an awful abuse of admin power - Pete did that secretly without informing the community. You can still chart its progress in the archives - Series 10.1 onwards, one pixel an update, until it was claimable. And then HE claimed it for his nation. The biggest problem was the abuse of course, and the fact that no-one - least of all the nearby claiming nations - were consulted; but Shireroth did have a particular grievance in that the Duchy (or some other rank of feudal subdivision) of Straylight has traditionally been associated with the gap between Benacia and Apollonia, as its culture involves floating, underwater or offseas rig-based communities. Indeed, you could see the bold TNR text 'Straylight' very close to the new island. Nowadays, the MCS takes a more conservative approach to Straylight (in that oceans aren't claimable in any way), and Straylight has since moved around to other nations, but at the time it was a significant problem.Craitman wrote:We did have a mystery island (called the Isle of Sago) appear back when Pete was AdminGen, however, but it only last a few maps as it was eroded away to save too much arguing - but it was still unrealistically large for its kind
Not that new islands haven't been created on a more permanent basis: in the VERY old days, Cibola - a whole continent to cope with more claims - but later Sypyr and Leng, all by Ryan. The main problem with the latter two is that they are so close to the poles that they are basically streaks of land, tiny on a spherical projection. Further, Shireroth's Scott has always held a personal hatred of Leng because his nation (a county within Shireroth, called Hyperborea or Raikoth) was designed as the northern-most place on Micras, and Leng was placed agonisingly close in longitude to his territory, as if to say - oh hi, screw you.

I never knew about the whole Isle of Sago incident. That's absolutely hilarious! Hell, it took ALL that time before anyone noticed that?!
We should make a tradition of having Sago appear randomly and then erode away.

Re: How to claim
It was done at the instigation of Pete, with the tacit support (as I understood then) of Spangle, and they were essentially the people we entirely relied on for putting the map together faithfully for every update. I can't remember exactly who shouted about it first, perhaps a Shirerithian or perhaps Jeremy.Orion wrote:I never knew about the whole Isle of Sago incident. That's absolutely hilarious! Maybe Sago could appear somewhere else, making an appearance somewhere one pixel at a time, claimable by whoever spots it first?
