From Litkov, the most leal Governor of the Siyachia, Adin ben Shmuel, writes to report upon the preparedness of the Southern Sector of the Benacian Western Defence Zone:
May your most reverend excellencies be assured that the efforts of the whole community have been mobilised into the construction of the defensive works faced onto the borders of the perfidious Batavian foe, whose treacherous repudiation of neutrality precipitated this present necessity. The populace has responded marvellously to the call given to assist in these labours. Indeed a sufficient quantity of voluntary and hired labourers have been found from amongst our own subjects that it has not been necessary to institute the corvee in order to meet the stipulated quota of workers for this necessary enterprise. The digging of anti-tank and defensive trenches continues apace and the barracks for the arriving contingents of the Benacian Labour Reserve are being prepared as this notice wends its way to you.
The frontier is held for the present by the 1st and 2nd Battle Divisions of the Black Legions, their watch on the frontier having begun long before the present moment, when unreasoning Kalgachia and belligerent Kasterburg conspired to deprive us of our sacred allegiance to the Benacian cause. They have in more recent times been augmented by the armaments of the 1st Fortress & Artillery Division, whose gunners have been given great sport of late by the repeated and futile attempts of dissenters to transgress the hallowed frontiers in their sacrilegious flight from the obligations mandated upon them by the Covenant. I myself have been fortunate been given a tour of the operations centre of the division during a recent action against one band of fifty or so dissenters attempting to thread a path through the minefields diligently laid upon the border. Evidently they knew not that they had been under the sights and sensors of our aerostats for the entire duration of their illicit night time journey. Great was the havoc wrought amongst them when, at the midnight hour, and without warning, the first shots of cannister and suppressant gas fell amongst them, having been fired by concealed gun emplacements miles distant, and guided onto the target by our vigilant silent drones. I can only relate to you the satisfaction felt in seeing shot and shell, and the exuding vapour clouds of soporific gas play amongst the heretical and apostate wretches as they attempted to break and flee. Shall I deny our comradely good humour, as those of us assembled in the operations room witnessed the relayed footage of one family, their brood in tow, blundering into the prepared ground strewn with anti-personnel mines, which sprung from the ground and denotated above their heads, reducing six traitors into a tangled writhing mess of steaming meat.
Nor has our own Volhyrian Kossar Brigade stinted in its dedication to duty. To them fell the honourable task for fetching out of the forest those few recusants who survived their encounter with our prepared defences. Of the fifty who fled, barely fourteen were retrieved sufficiently alive and bodily intact to be returned to Litkov to face the mercy of our justice. Be assured that billets in the Labour Reserve will as of yet still be found for those Umraists, and other apostates, who repent of their error and offer sacrifice to the Highest Divinity in the ordained fashion and venerate the Imperial Icons as directed. For any who do not, the full penalty for their transgressions shall be exacted.
It is my hope that the rigour with which the Coordinated State and Harmonious Society are upheld in Siyachia will be held forth as an example for all Governorates of our Benacian Union to emulate.
I have the honour to remain your ever obedient servant.
All this has happened before, and all this will happen again.
