Rook's Qualification Challenge
Originally posted on the Uantiri Forums, but everyone is invited to join me!
\Happy New Year! This year I have a personal goal, and I challenge everyone else to join me.
The Winchester/NRA Marksmanship Qualification Program is a self improvement marksmanship program, but I'll let them describe themselves:
They have a number of disciplines including various forms of pistol from the most basic to defensive to bulls-eye; Air pistol and air rifles; small bore, rim fire, and high power precision; tactical rifle; hunting oriented; muzzle loaders; etc.Qualification shooting is an informal, year-round recreational shooting activity that provides incentive awards for developing and improving marksmanship skills. It's a drill. We set the standards; you meet the challenge! Progression is self-paced and scores are challenging but attainable. Performance is measured against established par scores and any shooter who meets or exceeds those scores is entitled to the corresponding recognition awards for that rating. It's an honor system!
Shooters acquire the large discipline patch at the onset of the program and as each rating is earned, they are entitled to all of the corresponding awards for the rating. Each rating level has a skill rocker, medal, and certificate award that recognizes and highlights the achievement.
I've decided to start out in two disciplines: the basic pistol and the tactical rifle. While the aggregate rifle program may seem more basic and entry level, my rifle doesn't have iron sights and the tactical rifle program is designed for rifles that utilize optics.
So when I get to the range I'll be posting my scores, and my progress towards each goals. Today I anticipate achieving the Provisional Marksman rating in pistol, and will be zeroing and sighting in my rifle, so I don't anticipate posting scores towards qualification with it today.
If I get enough interest I think making the MQP (Marksmanship Qualification Program) ratings official ranks available to Uantiri citizenry and individuals abroad and authorized and respected for wear to formal events, court, etc. would be fun.
See you on the firing line.

I got out to the range, but just as I started sighting in the rifle it started to snow. I stopped when the snow got thick enough I couldn't see the target and I couldn't feel my toes. The red dot I bought for the rifle started out intolerably off, so I didn't get it zeroes for 100 yards, but it is on target enough to hit center-of-burglar the length of my house, which is all I really need for now. Sadly I didn't get a chance to make progress toward any qualification, but that's the problem with an out door range when it's in the teens (deg. F).

OK good, I am not the only one living in the snow then. Its always hard to get to the range around this time of year. And I haven't renewed my membership yet either

I was shooting at an open range on conservation land, so it didn't cost me more than the gas to drive. There is an indoor range down in Olathe though, but it's about as far a drive. Not nearly as cold though.

Re: Rook's Qualification Challenge
The qualification disciplines include air pistol and air rifle, which are available almost anywhere. It also has a discipline for "International Air Rifle/Pistol" which follows closely to Olympic/Paralympic shooting.

Re: Rook's Qualification Challenge
So my friend was using an old BB gun of mine to chase cats out of his yard. Got a new yard in a new city and doesn't need the BB gun anymore. Turns out it qualifies for the NRA/Winchester Air Pistol Qualification, so I printed out some to scale D-40 targets and shot them up. For Provisional Marksman you have to shoot 10 targets with 10 shots and score a 40 out of 100 in each one. I was very disappointed in my scores. 58, 65, 65, and 74.
I always hate being 'that guy' who blames his equipment... but the $15 CO2 air pistol I am using would actually drop BBs on the floor in front of me every 7th or 8th shot. That was with a brand new CO2 cartridge. I expect I can get to Marksman 1st Class, maybe Sharpshooter with this piece of plastic, but I doubt I'll be able to qualify Expert or higher, as it sends BBs all over the place. I have a few rifle rests that you use for bench firing rifles, propped the pistol up nice and snug on them and tried to get an idea of what a 3 shot group looked like without human error. It was an atrocious 3 inches at 10 meters. I may go pick up a bit more professional air pistol, as it's kind of fun to be able to do a bit of shooting off the back porch while the kid's watching TV and it's too cold to go to the range.
Anyway, tl;dr I rate at Provisional Marksman in Air Pistol now. Woo, go me.
