[New forum] Advertising
A few different things to discuss with this topic, it's quite a broad topic.. I'll list the stuff in numerated points, makes life so much easier when it's numerated.
1)Will the new forum have adverts? Simple really, are we having adverts on the new forum? Adsense or whatever, I think if we did have adverts and adsense, what money is raised would need to be clearly shown and displayed to the users, and how it's spent also clearly explained.
2)Adverts on the site? There's an advert box worked into the site, shall we put some google adsense in there or something?
3)Micronational adverts? It seems like it might be worthwhile, even if we put google adverts or whatever, to allow micronations or micronational events to use the advertising space, either for free with some system to decide if they're allowed (lest it be some join examplestan we're better than testland, no join testland we're superior to examplestan thing) or maybe with a heavily reduced fee and some paypal donate button
4)Some paypal donate button? Again, with the money shown clearly to the users in terms of how much there is and where it's going.
5)And the other way around, are we going to advertise? Google adsense's prices are confusing but apparently rather reasonable, and I also noticed facebook's got their little adverts thing going on at the side there? A bit of money, if we raise any, could go towards advertising the new hub, in actual advertisingland! In imaginaryland where we raised a fudgetonne of money, we could even advertise on those weird business card stand wall displays you see in tesco (http://www.wrtgroup.co.uk) or even on billboards or bus stops with something like JCDecaux I checked before and it's something like £300 though, but I could well be wrong.
6)Still that way around, but free, University advertising? Perhaps we could make some posters advertising micronations which we could stick up in universities across the country (now that many of us are in the universities across the country (well... at least.. the ones in wales it seems)) or at community centres or whatever?
So yeah, a load of questions, I am prepared for simple No, No, Yes, No, Yes, Maybe, No style answers but would greatly prefer actual input and discussion... although that may be hard when there's 6 random sections to discuss in this thread :/

I think we should run adverts with the stated aim of paying back the domain name cost, and then we should review the situation?dr-spangle wrote:1)Will the new forum have adverts? If we can work out a fair way of doing this, then certainly.3)Micronational adverts? It seems like it might be worthwhile, even if we put google adverts or whatever, to allow micronations or micronational events to use the advertising space, either for free with some system to decide if they're allowed (lest it be some join examplestan we're better than testland, no join testland we're superior to examplestan thing) or maybe with a heavily reduced fee and some paypal donate button
Yes, again with the aim of covering the domain name cost and then review.4)Some paypal donate button? Again, with the money shown clearly to the users in terms of how much there is and where it's going.
It's an idea, but we'd have to get it all worded very carefully first.5)And the other way around, are we going to advertise? Definitely! I'll work on a flyer.6)Still that way around, but free, University advertising? Yes, because they're discussion points for everyone so I'm waiting the input of everyone.

Basically you must accept in this hobby that people will give no input if they can help it, look at the FAQ thread, no input until I trolled with a biased FAQ on seccessionist vs simulationist.
You have to give a tonne of input for even a little return.
There's a saying in the aviation industry "How do you make a small fortune in the aviation industry? Start with a large fortune."
Change making fortunes to getting input and aviation industry to micronationalism

... pretty goddamn awkward way of saying "thanks for contributing." I've been trying to keep out of this one because I know you all hate me, and when I did find a good place to jump in, it prompts this.dr-spangle wrote:look at the FAQ thread, no input until I trolled with a biased FAQ on seccessionist vs simulationist.

Since earlier in the thread

there was already stuff saying we need FAQ and such, but nothing came of it except "lol that banner's funny" stuff...

Re: [New forum] Advertising
Sorry, but I'm feeling a tad stressed that Guido says I have to finish this by the 8th... I effectively can't do any work on it between tomorrow and the 17th or so, so I have to get a load of stuff done by tomorrow
In the mean time, I can't get anything done while Cairney's not online, which he won't be because it's boxing day.
This stresses me and then I take it out on people who help because they're within arms reach as it were, which leads to less help, which leads to more work, which leads to more stress.

Re: [New forum] Advertising
There's no real deadline. It would be *nice* if it got done by a certain time, but if it's impractical, than that's that. We'll just do what we do. I can't code, but I can write stuff, so if more stuff needs to be written then I can do some work there.

Re: [New forum] Advertising
Here's a blocks of text todo list:
1)Home page - Intro text
2)About page - About Hub.mn - Describe the history of the site and the community. (???)
3)About page - Contact Us - List of staff members and contact information.
4)Micronationalism page - FAQ - Various Questions and Answers
5)Micronationalism page - History - Summarized history of micronations from past to present.
6)Micronationalism page - Definitions - Explanation of the various types of micronations (secessionist, simulationist, etc) and other mn lingo.
7)Hosting page - Intro - Introduction to the hosting, reasons behind it
Hosting page - Types - Types of hosting we offer
9)Hosting page - Apply - How to apply (I'm thinking they can apply on the forum?)
10)Hosted page - List - List of things we host, title, small description, contacts
Obviously the hosting and hosted section can't really be done easily without us deciding stuff first.
I'm basing all this off Ryan's post here:
http://micras.org/forum/viewtopic.php?p=59791#p59791
I'm sure ryan wrote a tonne of stuff for this, but I can't find it

I didn't say it had to be done by the 8th, just that'd it'd be 'rather neat'! As you've now explained that there's a fair bit to do, that's fine. It was just that everything seemed to be heading rather aimlessly in no particular direction. Perhaps we should allow a couple more weeks?

Re: [New forum] Advertising
Stressed over a suggested possible deadline for a part-time hobby? Look at things a little bit more realistically and work on it when you can - there's no deadline for any of this and you have more important things to do as well, I'm sure...dr-spangle wrote:Sorry, but I'm feeling a tad stressed that Guido says I have to finish this by the 8th...

It headed aimlessly in no direction due to christmas and such...
Also, Craitman, I care about this hobby, should I be sorry for that? I've worked on stuff in it for over 5 years, I feel I've put a lot of work into it over that time, There aren't many other things I have worked for over 5 years on to be honest. It sort of makes me care about it.

Re: [New forum] Advertising
I never said that, so don't start another of the "you care too much" discussions. I'm just saying that rather than complaining about being "stressed" by other's suggestions, you prioritise a little more. I've never once doubted your commitment or input within the community, but most people realise other things are a tad more important - so if those things stop you from working on micronational stuff, then that's how it is. I for one am not going to be moaning about things not being done (which a few tend to do) when I understand everyone here lives lives outside of this forum (regardless of how little evidence there is of that )dr-spangle wrote:Also, Craitman, I care about this hobby, should I be sorry for that?
