Ooh, tell me, tell meShyriath wrote:There's at least one island, for example, that the physical map has that the claimsmap doesn't (and would have pertinence to a current claim).
I did make a completely blank map a while back which had the coastline correct to the claimsmap (and so should be [virtually] the same as the current map). However, that'd be on my computer at home and not accessible up here
Re: FNORD article sources?
It's up in the northeast corner of the physical map. It's where Ashkenatza's Ayzstantsye Herzl polar base is; but while the claimsmap shows the base as sitting on ice, the physical map has an actual island there.
Actually, looking through the archives, it appears that the island was on the claimsmap once, but accidentally removed as of version 13.7.2 when its owner, the Britannic Empire, was deleted from the map...

Re: FNORD article sources?
A couple years ago, I redid the Physical/Resource/Blank maps from the claimsmap, because they were quite out of date with claimsmap coastline changes (particularly the island of Istvanistan, which moved quite a lot). They were up to date then. But may have change since.

Well, Darwin was marked as city back then, and the cities are usually located on land...

Yeah, NB claimed a city on the ice, it was let through then decided they shouldn't have done, so an island was put there... then the island was removed after they left

Re: FNORD article sources?
Yeah, it was more that the island was created after the city rather than the other way round. We could say it was manmade (despite its size), I guess, but was then eroded
Re: FNORD article sources?
Ahhh, okay. So it's now officially not there.

Speaking of which does anyone know what happened to that tiny island between Apollonia and Benacia- kind of where Straylight would be?

Oh, "The Holy Isle" or whatever it was called? I remember Pete created it, intending to be some sort of legacy of his, I guess, and claimed it for Kataria without it passing through the Council or anything. It received quite a bit of backlash, so was reduced/eroded by a couple of pixels one update at a time until nothing remained

Isle of Sago
I created it, pixel by pixel, through maps 10.0 to 11.0 if I recall correctly, it grew to a maximum size of 10 pixels, it then eroded again
I had always planned for it to appear pixel by pixel then erode pixel by pixel, like Surtsey or similar
Pete claimed the island to prevent as much backlash I think, knowing I would dissolve the island away again, stopping some random nation claiming it then getting super pissed off
Due to trying to prevent backlash, people seem to remember pete as causing it all

Re: FNORD article sources?
Looks like I misread what happened slightly then
Although not too much of a difference between holiness and sago, eh?

That could be a fantastic excuse for a RecWar if we were all extremely bored one summer.
I remember I tried to make a sea relief map of Micras and there were some very deep sea trenches with volcanic activity around them in some parts of Micras- so for example one day, a new island could appear between the territorial waters of two nations by prior agreement, that could cause a territorial dispute and they could have a fight over it.
Of course having served its purpose it could disappear pixel by pixel later on after the final settlement.
Also, does anyone know why the Fifth Isle and Apollonia seperated?

Re: FNORD article sources?
I think the nation who claimed it first wanted an island, and none were available, but there was a nice looking penninsula
I think this is what one of the oldies told me, but it could be a false memory...
I remember your trench map, based on my techtonic map :/
my techtonic map was crap

Yeah, in the old days when the MCS was still a new concept, we had to beg people on our knees to join and we were a little more lenient about changing land around to give countries what they wanted. That one was for Treesia, and it was named in their honor - Treesian legend said that it was once the furthest outpost of a great kingdom of five islands, the others of which sunk beneath the sea.
