Re: New Paradigm Claimsmap :: Scratchpad
All the ones I have have easily distinguishable symbols...CJ Miller wrote:Quite a few macronational atlases do much the same thing.

You guys are being reaaalllly nitpicky towards one of the few people that seems to have the will to try to modernize a version of the map.
CJ, you've got my backing. Why don't you do a small section of the map in your style to show us what you're thinking and we'll go from there?

In order to make a successful map, all aspects have to be considered and thought about. All he's posted is symbols and fonts, so that's all we can currently discuss...SaiKar wrote:You guys are being reaaalllly nitpicky towards one of the few people that seems to have the will to try to modernize a version of the map.

Re: New Paradigm Claimsmap :: Scratchpad
Sorry, wasn't trying to be really nitpicky, I just like the varied symbols.SaiKar wrote:You guys are being reaaalllly nitpicky towards one of the few people that seems to have the will to try to modernize a version of the map.

Re: New Paradigm Claimsmap :: Scratchpad
The way I originally designed the symbols was to take a real atlas, sit down and open up Paint, and try and mimic them as best as possible while incorporating existing symbols from the legend.
It wasn't all that bad considering I had nothing else to go on.
At any rate, IMO, we should essentially do the same thing now and try and mimic as closely as possible the common icons displayed in most atlases. It will make viewing the map easily distinguishable and readable by all who use it - which is the primary objective after all.

Btw, I'm using the HarperCollins Concise World Atlas from 2004.

I second. Also, the italic versions look ugly with this anti-aliasing technique.Different font sizes perhaps?

Re: New Paradigm Claimsmap :: Scratchpad
Is the light blue border around the islands intentional, or is that also anti-aliasing?
Also, what they said. Conceptually I think you're on the right track. Little islands are always going to be harder since you've got to cram region and controlling country names in there somewhere along with the cities.

Intentional -- it's an ice cap.

Re: New Paradigm Claimsmap :: Scratchpad
I hope this is a parallel to claimsmap style thing? as it's hellish for anything accurate, anti-aliasing makes my brain bleed.
The claimsmap should be shooting for accuracy, the special map for aesthetics
Really, we need a layered claimsmap to do any of this remotely easily, but people won't make those even if I offer to pay for them to do it.

Factuality: Not very high, except the reluctancy of people to make layered maps when i offer to pay them
Opinions: High, nothing officially says claimsmap is accurate, but it's my opinion that it should be
Joking: Not as high as it should be really
Emotion: a little bit
Spelling & Grammar: Should be ok, claimsmap's not really a word though, to OED
Research Sources: People don't make layered maps even if you offer to pay them.

Re: New Paradigm Claimsmap :: Scratchpad
Shyriath, yours will be useful whether it could be used for claimsmap or not, because it can zoom beautifully.
