Cycling the staff
This is not a thread proposing some radical change to the fundamental structure of the MCS, so do not worry about that. Rather it is simply a concerned member raising said concern.
Commitments, we all have them and to be honest we all know that real-life commitments tend to take priority over this hobby. Some of us may not have very much time left over after these commitments are all taken care of. Whether they are family, school or work, they all obviously take precedence over this as they should. But meanwhile (and this is not placing blame) the administration of the MCS has slowed due to lack of time by its council and administrator. With the school year in full swing and work and family life never really taking a break this is fully understandable. However, there are some people here who might have some extra time on their hands. Enough time that they might actually be able to help out with the daily running of the MCS. Basically, the MCS needs to evaluate which council members are the most active and those that are not. We need to bring up the fact that they're otherwise inactive as a staff member and give them their ultimatum (retire gracefully or be shamed with a sacking). Then we need to hold an open tryout for new staff members. Simple as that.
This really isn't about placing blame as much as it is about purging ourselves of the dead parts and putting new, fresh parts in their place. That is required for the effective administration and running of this organization. And if we want to begin our step into the much wider world (i.e. our situation regarding the OAM and other outreach efforts) we will need to keep things fresh and running smoothly. We just need new staff, nothing more, nothing less. We aren't talking about massive changes or uprooting the MCS or reorganization, we're just talking about hiring new staff to replace the inactive staff so that we receive less inactivity complaints and things go smoother.

I've wanted the Apollo Foundation job for, well, since I heard about the Apollo Foundation job back in... 2000 or so? And Benkern is AWOL without any notice of his plans.
Re: Cycling the staff
I think he is also one of the more inactive council members. Perhaps it is time to give the proposed ultimatum and get this train rolling.

Re: Cycling the staff
AF =/= MCS. Take it to the AF forum maybe?
Nick, I wholeheartedly agree with you. Would you like to propose an amendment to the charter so we know where we're working from?

Re: Cycling the staff
I think we can safely leave the charter out of this. There is no need to make a change to the function of the MCS when the MCS is not broken, only certain staff member's hobby time is broken.
We have enough sweeping changes to deal with in regards to other things (the Micronational Discussion subforum is riddled with it, take your pick), right now I would like to see some focus on fixing ourselves internally. I.e. putting makeup and a new dress on a dead body is still putting those things on a dead body.

Re: Cycling the staff
Isn't this a problem that could arise again and one we therefore need to make permanent provision for?
Re: Cycling the staff
I think that is a matter for after the replacements. New council members with fresh ideas can vote on it and we don't otherwise bog ourselves down with matters like what should be in this amendment.

Re: Cycling the staff
The AF administrator has a voice on the MCS voting council. This is very much a relevant place for me to suggest replacing Benkern.Guido Zambelis wrote:AF =/= MCS. Take it to the AF forum maybe?

Re: Cycling the staff
I said in the other thread we had about this, how about a register? or similar? council members post in register thread, no post in a month = removal.
But that was a thread where I suggested things, and a thread that was mainly aimed at attacking me, as such it died
EDIT: by the way, I don't feel that AF admin should have a council place anymore, it arose from the idea that all council members needed another job, but they don't quite frankly. I'm not saying you shouldn't get a place on the council, but that it would be a place on the council as a council member, also special cartographer would probably be scrapped as it's not going anywhere...

Re: Cycling the staff
I think it goes without saying that Benkern will be replaced entirely.
I will risk a derailing and say that this be first on the list when we get new staff. For the purposes of the ultimatum I say we use a deadline of 1 week. "Oh I'll pick up my activity I promise" is no longer an option. If they don't respond, they get sacked, if they do then they can go gracefully and have a hand in ushering things in.dr-spangle in another thread wrote:Well, I was suggesting we try and get the council to have a time limit on how long a council member can be missing for, before they're removed...
I think at this point we can say that Benkern is up for replacement. THUS, if you want to take his position as a council member, that is fine. You'll just have to wait for tryouts .SaiKar wrote:The AF administrator has a voice on the MCS voting council. Dunno if you got my edit to my last post, so i'll post it again:

My apologies; I did not see that edit. But yeah. Whatever works for the group dynamic. I'm a flexible guy.

Re: Cycling the staff
By the way, here's the other thread about this exact matter:
http://micras.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=66&t=4478
It mostly revolves around being angry at me for not voting on a normark claim that no one reminded me to vote on before getting angry at me
You'll note I made the same apollo foundation not needed point there

Re: Cycling the staff
Well memory slips aside, this is going to apply to staff members that are actually inactive. You're active, so just reminding you isn't much of an issue I don't think. The main issue is inactivity in the staff, not absent mindedness.
I don't want to overstep mynon-existent authority and begin PMing staff members about their inactivity, so perhaps you can do that? So far Benkern seems to be first on the list. If all we need to do is replace 1 staff member, that's awesome. 1 active staff member should make quite a bit of difference.
I don't want to overstep my

Re: Cycling the staff
Considering I've sent him numberous text messages to his actual mobile phone, some of which he has actually replied to, I don't think PMs help, I feel he may want to leave the council in fact, or is doing it to show the current weakness in the council system lacking inactivity limits...
