Size of lands
In the Council, a discussion on the size of members came. Is there a way to calculate the sizes of the countries easy map by map?
So for comparison... we need to do it in pixels because the square kilometre thing only works at the equator

There were some calculations, I believe Rook made them.

Whenever I hear that name, I think of professional wrestling... Not sure that's necessarily a bad thing.

Nope, not me. I know that Spangle had some way of calculating the area of nations.
And as for latitude, I always assumed the micras map was a Peter's Projection style equal area map.

Spangle used to use a graphic-editing program that could count pixels. I can't recall what the name of it was.
This link seems to suggest it can be done in Photoshop, which I'll have to try and see if it works.

Re: Size of lands
It is easy in Gimp too. Just select by color and look at the histogram.

Re: Size of lands
Yeah, a pixel count would be the most plausible way to calculate size, and has been done before. The only problem is with the claimsmap having labels overlapping colours (or even some labels being the same colour as nations), which skews it slightly. We did used to have a plain borders-and-colours map but that didn't get updated often enough - would definitely be something to consider though if necessary...

Re: Size of lands
Well, it would give us a somewhat good idea in what order country sizes are.
Could someone please to a quick one after each update? It doesn't need to be all super-extensive. It would certainly help comparisons.

Re: Size of lands
Well, if my version of claims map was to be used, it would probably be much more accurate. The only things which are not in one of two shades of the country - one normal and one for region names and internal borders - are cities and their symbols.

Re: Size of lands
I finally got GIMP to work (yay me) and figured out how to do this with that software.
Steps:
1. Open Claims Map (or any map) in GIMP (v. 2.6.11)
2. Use the "Fuzzy Select Tool" to pick a nation/area
3. Go under Windows -> Dockable Diaglogs -> Histogram
4. In the Histogram window, switch to RGB Channel
5. In the bottom right of the Histogram window, it will tell you the number of Pixels in the selection
Note, for making multiple selections, simply hold down the L-Shift while clicking.
For example, Elwynn is 59,522, Craitland is 11,835, Shireroth is 179,299, Ashkenatza is 54,400, and Ocia is 5,544.

Re: Size of lands
We really should expand the size of the map or break it into two enlarged east-west projections. The reason I say this is because with these recent calculations, I've realized that Liechtenstein would be about two pixels in size on Micras. My most recent claim is exactly the same size as Guatemala (41865 sq mi)! I never would have guessed that without sitting down and doing the arithmetic. I think our inability to show finer details on the map discourages people from claiming smaller areas of land. If someone wanted a country the size of Liechtenstein, it'd have to be 2 pixels and no more!
Re: Size of lands
Also, we must have the borders into account. When last month I made the calculations concerning the area of Gerenia and each of its provinces, I realized that both the borders and the coastline are 1px wide and thus, they have a specific area (yes, 144 sq km). So it occurred to me to calculate the borders/coastline areas separately, and give half of such areas to Gerenia, while the other half would belong to the contiguous Nation, province or sea.

I was under the impression you had first to erase country and city names. At least, that's what Erasmus told me once. Haven't found the time yet to learn how to work with GIMP myself yet.Orion wrote:I finally got GIMP to work (yay me) and figured out how to do this with that software.

Re: Size of lands
That method does not take into account borders and labels; it is simply a quick way to get a rough approximation.

Re: Size of lands
Our territory of New Vaduz is (perhaps evidently) Liechtenstein-styled and was, until the pixel resizing, about twice the size. It's probably about three/four times it now!Orion wrote:If someone wanted a country the size of Liechtenstein, it'd have to be 2 pixels and no more!
