Size of lands

Re: Size of lands
There isn't or at least it's minimal as to be negligible. That's the purpose of an equal area map. It sacrifices other aspects of accuracy, as has been said, such as angle and isn't as useful for navigation. But what's it's best for is the accurate representation of area across the entire map, keeping landmasses in proportion...which is the only reason we use the map.
To be completely honest, before people started bickering about skewed landmasses, I always considered it to be an equal-area map because making it anything else is maddening and kind of silly.

Re: Size of lands
I think the longitude/latitude markers help madden it; they imply the map to be in an equirectangular projection. If the MCS could see its way clear to quietly getting rid of those, there'd be no challenge to an equal-area interpretation of the map... which would be awesome.Rook wrote:To be completely honest, before people started bickering about skewed landmasses, I always considered it to be an equal-area map because making it anything else is maddening and kind of silly.

You can't imagine how many people I had bothering me to add those damn lat/lon markers.
Of course, if it would make the projection of the map that much better, then I'm all for it. However, if we do accept that the map is a Peter's Projection, then I would still like to see it translated properly into a Mercator projection, since that is the more common form used.

That'd be funny, because then all the arctic regions that people think will look neigh invisible will become larger than life!

Re: Size of lands
That's fine, as long as the Mercator is known to be "false" (in a different way to the Peters). I agree fully with this proposal if we can be sure which projection is which.Rook wrote:That'd be funny, because then all the arctic regions that people think will look neigh invisible will become larger than life!

Re: Size of lands
Indeed.
I always assumed the lat long were there simply for familiarity, to make the map look 'more mappy.'

Re: Size of lands
That's sorta how I've always seen them; just there as a guide to being able to describe where a certain area is rather than to portray a certain projectionRook wrote:I always assumed the lat long were there simply for familiarity, to make the map look 'more mappy.'
Re: Size of lands
When I was asked to add them (I think it was by Bill, Kuralyov or someone with mappy skills) I was not familiar with those types of measures and trusted that they were accurate. If they're not, then we should get rid of them or adjust them so they are accurate.
Re: Size of lands
Random thought that occurred to me last night - the equirectangular/plate carree projection does have at least one advantage, which is that it seems to be the most commonly accepted input for programs that can convert maps between projections.

Re: Size of lands
Sooo... will we make a Mercator projection of Micras then... so we don't have to be confused by the long and lat on the claims map...?

Lol, this is scary:
Micras and Earth compared, in sq km:
Shireroth: 95 878 512
Gralus: 60 749 280
Alexandria 53 406 576
Asia 43 820 000
Stormark: 39 321 936
Natopia: 35 956 944
Russia: 16,377,742
Batavia: 12 740 976
Brazil: 8,515,767
Craitland: 5 543 424
Gotzborg: 4 238 352
Batavia (St Anna): 3 139 632
Interland: 3 013 776
I really must have done this wrong...

Re: Size of lands
That's not as bad as it sounds, considering there are about 5x more countries on Earth than on Micras.
Re: Size of lands
Micras' landmass is larger.

Re: Size of lands
How have you counted that? Pixels with pixel-to-area ratio? Or according to some other projection than equal-area?

I didn't really calculate, I believe someone told me once.
