Re: Official Battleground Thread
I altered the post and... I'm not an expert: I assumed that the system fired these and loaded another torpedo in place - would it really make more than 80 seconds to reload? I think it takes less, so the submarine dispatched a total of five torpedoes.
Damage was supposed to be in my description, but I'm still thinking in Polish now - I wanted to say the fire was stopped because the ship has a serious leak. So the whole post:
Interlandian submarine:
- launched another two torpedoes
- was hit by first torpedo: it caused a serious leak in sleeping space section.
- launched another torpedo, one of two reloaded after the first two were launched
- was damaged by a torpedo, which hit somewhere near stern, not damaging the propeller nor nuclear reactor directly, but immobilising the boat
- was damaged by a missile, which apparently damaged torpedo tubes; the second Interlandian torpedo was neither dispatched nor blown up.
Total losses: the ship is immobilised and can't emerge, due to a huge ballast of water which went through the leak. It's disarmed and sends SOS signal.

[Taking into account the ruling made by Montague, Interlandian submarine destroyed, two torpedos fired at loudest target]
Summary:
- Loudest target identified as retreating Antican submarine 'SAR Creeping Death'
- First torpedo again destroyed by counter-measures
- Second torpedo detonates within range of propeller
- 'SAR Creeping Death' shuts down power from reactor due to damage, runs on diesel engine
- 4 seamen KIA
- 'SAR Daunting' escorts Creeping Death back to Newport, and then returns to 2CSG

Summary: The rescue boat finds 52 people of the sunk submarine crew alive, but unable to fight in this war. The survivors were sent to the nearest hospital and are cared by experienced psychologists. Three are in critical state, 22 are stable; the latter 27 were working in the part of the ship which wasn't hit by the torpedoes directly, but they are suffering from posttraumatic stress disorder.None here too.
OK. Get back to... Wait, what was that?
What?
Be quiet.
I hear that murmuring. Going underwater.

Re: Official Battleground Thread
Summary: The eastern end of New Montauk, indicated as the national park, has been heavily carpet-bombed by the 1st Air Attack Wing. The bomber bucked fiercely as flak cannons exploded five-hundred feet below it. Smoke-infused air billowed up on both sides. But still the bomber flew on, and on either side Captain hawthorne could discern the other bombers and an escort of fighter jets. Similarly, they were also being caught in the turbulence created by the flak guns on New Montauk. But, alas, the guns could not reach this high an altitude.
Cloud cover obscured most of the island below, but GPS systems indicated that they had just crossed over the eastern shore in the area designated as a national park.
"This is our target," Hawthorne indicated in the microphone, which relayed to the other bomber planes. "Prepare to start dropping your payloads."
The additional whir of motors and grinding gears could be heard over the roar of the engines and the bursting of guns as the bomb bay doors cranked open.
"Use your GPS navigators to indicate location and drop your bombs in a westerly fashion," indicated Hawthorne. "This is not a precision bomb drop, gentlemen. We want to carpet bomb as much of the eastern end of the island as possible, so maintain line formation and begin dropping at a steady rate of 20k per square kilometer. When the bays are empty, we head home, so let's get this over with."
As Hawthorne disengaged the microphone, the sound of shunting bombs could be heard as they left their rollers and dropped through the bay doors into the open air. Hawthorne could see from the port windows that the other bombers were also dropping their loads.
Several seconds passed, and then a series of loud explosions deafened the sound of the flak guns. The bombs were hitting their targets.
For the next hour, the bombers dropped their payload of bombs. And as the explosions of the flak guns diminished, the sounds of bombs hitting New Montauk increased. As the last of the bombs rolled into the atmosphere, the flak guns had all but stopped firing. And so the wing turned about and began their journey home.
OOC: I'm assuming the judges will determine the extent of casualties and success rate of the bombing?
Re: Official Battleground Thread
Nope. We're here to settle disputes between players, not act as "game masters" that handle specific, unchallenged conditions of the wars. Both sides should come to a consensus on how bombings like this affect the scope of the war. If they cannot, then you can put the dispute before a judge, but I don't want to hear it until you at least try.

Re: Official Battleground Thread
Bombing specifications:
5 B-52s can carry a total of 157 tons of bombs. They have been dropped on the national park with an area of roughly 7,800 square kilometers, meaning about 20 kilos per square kilometer.
(I usually don't read the story, which is why I'm saying this even though Ryan already kinda did.)

Re: Official Battleground Thread
I think I'm gonna protest this. The first thing is, how could you determine, if your B-52s even made their way through the coast. The rockets are usually working differently - once they fly about 5km, the next time 7km, and the third one can burst into flames one kilometre above the ground. The second thing is, that you predicted the result - "the flak guns had all but stopped firing".

Re: Official Battleground Thread
I'm not sure what rockets you're talking about. If you're talking about your AA missiles, they are of the standard Anunia variety, and the Stinger (used in the US Avenger system) has a maximum range of 8 kilometers, and the bombers are flying well over that. The maximum altitude of both the bombers and my fighters that are patrolling the airspace over Montauk above 9 000 meters have a service ceiling of 15 000 meters. Also, I don't know what other people do here, but I only look at the summary when deciding my reaction to a move. I've also informed Ryan via PM that he can't talk about enemy actions or call effects in his posts.
(Note: According to WP the maximum altitude for the Stinger missile is 3 800 meters.)

Re: Official Battleground Thread
I am talking about the range of the rockets. It's not like they have a maximum range, it's more like a normal distribution - 95% fall into a maximum range of 6-8km, and there are 2.5% which have more than 8km range (all the data is of an example nature - mi of 7km and sigma equal to 1km are imagined figures)...

Re: Official Battleground Thread
OOC: In order to avoid multiplying posts about one "defence move", I will write also about the air forces of Paulos Petrosigos. I consulted this with him and he will confirm this below my post.
Losses
The so-called "carpet" bombing was mostly unsucessfull due to loose dropping of bombs over a big, uninhabited forest region. Defending forces lost 4 soldiers and a truck in explosion of one of them, several roads and civilian buldings were also lightly damaged.
In airfight we lose four of nine present fighters and none of two present stealth fighters. One was hit by missile from distance (missiles was launched by both sides at the beginning of this battle) and three destroyed in close combat duels.
And the most popular bombs (i.e. Mark 82), weight about 250 kg kilos. So, this will be about 1 bomb per 12 square kilometers... I wouldn't call this "heavy carpet-bombing", but I won't quarell with Ryan's way of expressing.Malliki Tosha wrote:5 B-52s can carry a total of 157 tons of bombs. Ok, it's fair that only writed here or send to judges should be counted, but I don't get why the "story" should be less important on binding then summary.Malliki Tosha wrote:Also, I don't know what other people do here, but I only look at the summary so I know what to reply to.
And for Alvis Stormer HVM (which is also included in Annunia Convention as default AA unit) maximum range (and altitude) is 7 000 meters. I can agree it's not very consistent, but I think it's a little unfair, that Ryan declared "altitude just over AA range" without declaring what he belives to be that range. I accept that his aircraft can fly over the range, i.e. at 15 thousands meters, but he declared to be 500 ft over fire range which he couldn't know for sure, and which, as Pawel said, is only an approximation. In my story and summary I assumed, that he was just at the end of effective fire range - and some of our missiles were capable to hit him.Malliki Tosha wrote:(Note: According to WP the maximum altitude for the Stinger missile is 3 800 meters.)
Summary - The land forces was prepared to recive the bombing, thanks to stealth fighter scouting the strait, which discover the group long before the attack. Air defence opened fire at the enemy which was at the end of efective range and do only a little damage, then cease to fire before the air forces of Petrosigos 2nd Surmenian Group engaged enemy. Enemy fighters of Maliki Tosha also joined this airfight. After about thirty min. fight, our aircrafts disengage from enemy and returned to base. After that, returning aircrafts of enemy was shooted by air defence again - in hope, that due to duels and/or damages taken they are forced to lower their altitude.- Hoplon One, it's Loco Four. I've got enemy group at the radar. They're heading south, at 23 thousand feets. If they remain on course and current speed they will be over Montauk in about... (counting) 45 minutes. It's about ten to fifteen aircrafts, and I'm sure there are some heavy bombers with them.
- OK, Loco Four. Remain on stealth and follow this group, but don't get too close to them. Report if anything changes. Over. - the officer in the air command remained calm. He called to commander of the Surmenian Forces...
5 minutes later, in 1st Surmenian Group HQ...
- More then ten aircrafts? Heading our direction? About 40 minutes? All right, thank you. So, I want all our fighters over island and ready to stop them at the moment, those on patrol duty joins if they have enough fuel for air fight. The same about stealth fighters. Keep me up to date. Thanks. - general Andreosigos hanged up and taken another phone. - Colonel, sound the alarm. We got enemy air group at bay. They will be there in about 40 minutes. What? No, we don't know yet where they are going to drop bombs, but we will see when they will be lowering before the attack. Yes, all AA guns and missile launchers at full alarm. And inform all land commanders and President Abramowicz about the situation.
Half an hour later, about 9 km over the west Montauk.
- All right lads, we've will got them on the radars in about 5 minutes. - major Monologosigos informed other pilots of his group. - Remember, we have chance to intercept them by suprise...
At the same time, at the ground
- Our missiles missed the target, sir! - reported shooter of missile AA system.
- Dear Jsom, what they are doing? - commander of "24 AA Defence Position", which was the official title for his Alvis Stormer Air Defence System, couldn't belive his eyes, while observing on radar and on air the enemy bombers dropping... single bombs with big interval between each drop.
- I don't know sir, but it's totally weird. Should we launch another salvo? - asked the shooter.
- No, they're at the end of our range, maybe one or two of our missiles would hit them if we're lucky, but the others would be wasted - just like 90% of their bombs. Besides, in about 5 minutes our fighters will engage them. We should better get some cover. Their bombing tactics may be weird and totally useless - but I dont want to end with fu***n "one-for-million-chance-bomb" on my head. So - stop the fire and go on.
4 minutes and 30 seconds later, about 9 km over the west Montauk
- Their escort fighters are coming. Thirty seconds to contact! Good luck and Jsom bless us all! - Monologosigos with steady voice gave his last orders to his group. It was also his last words at all. 27 seconds later his fighter was hit by enemy missile which wasn't fooled by his aircraft defence system.

Re: Official Battleground Thread
Summary:After a couple days of clearing the waters south of Montauk with repeated RADAR scans, the First Carrier Group maneuvered to take a position southeast of Mountauk Island. The IS Abramowice was nowhere to be found.
"They may have decided to take position beyond the Norfolk Islands." Lt Valeria suggested.
"Indeed," Lt Leostratus said, "which puts them beyond the Antican land-based RADAR." Turning to Commodore Scutarius, he then said, "The land-based RADAR stations, and our own AEW can keep us appraised of any attempts at a massive air attack. As is typical procedure, I recommend that we maintain our current level of alert fighters on deck. It should be safe to free up the rest of our fighters to deal with Montauk Island's defenses."
"And what are those defenses?" Commodore Scutarius asked.
"From the look of things, they may have aircraft on the ground. No indication that they've been ordered into the air at all. There are unconfirmed claims that they possess stealth aircraft, but they should be marginally detectable if we mix in some long-wave RADAR scanning. I would recommend tuning one AEW helicopter to long-wave just in case."
Commodore Scutarius nodded.
Lt Leostratus continued. "There also appear to be a large concentration of mobile short-range anti-aircraft missile platforms. As long as we keep our aircraft above a minimum altitude, they won't be able to hit us."
"That'll prevent us from participating in ground support activities," noted Captain Peneus, CO of the carrier group's air wing. "At least for the time being."
Anthony Scutarius looked up from the information management table at his senior officers. "With 1st Strike Wing's bombers participating in carpet-bombing of enemy strongholds, and the two carrier groups preventing anyone from getting on or off the island, our prospects are looking good. We just need patience for this to follow through."
"The Second Carrier Group has requested that we contribute to their Combat Air Patrol over Montauk Island."
The Commodore nodded to himself. "Well, with the situation as it is, I don't see why we can't spare a few extra planes to that end. Peneus, coordinate with 2nd Carrier Group's CAG for a joint CAP."
"Aye, sir."
First Carrier Group takes position southeast of Montauk Island.
Doto and Galene continue active submarine and air search.
Helicopters continue AEW and ASW with dipping SONAR.
Two flights (8 fighters) kept on hot standby on the flight deck at all times.
CAP contributes to 2nd Carrier Group's patrol over Montauk Island.
