Giorgio Menti Trophy - Invitational Youth Tournament
Giorgio Menti Trophy - Invitational Youth Tournament
Named after Giorgio Menti, a former Gaian striker for the national team, the Giorgio Menti Trophy is a tournament that will bring some of Micras' finest young talents in a youth tournament that will offer player's a chance to play in a tournament that will emulate the competitive atmosphere of the top leagues across the planet.
The format is very simple. There will be 8 teams, divided into 2 groups of 4. Each team will play 3 matches against their opponents within the group. The top 2 from each group will go through to a semi-final knockout, before a final for the trophy.
The trophy is not affiliated with the FGGC, nor is it affiliated with any of the confederations - meaning that the resulting outcomes do not affect any of the FMF rankings. Whilst competitiveness is encouraged, it is a friendly tournament too and it's not all to do with the winning, it's more to do with the taking part and fulfiling the match experience that can potentially learn from as part of their development to the game.
The tournament will start in late August. Each team must submit a list of 18 players, all of whom have to be under the age of 23, with the exception of 3 over-age players. In emulating the atmosphere, the teams will play in 4 stadiums - San Felice (Fiorecittà), DaeZoom Arena (Rozenhafn - Vecchiacittà Calcio's home stadium), Scoglitto and Savona.
Accepted Invites:
- FioreAcademica (Affiliated with FC Fiorecittà) [TEL]
- San Pietro (Affiliated with Romero Sport) [TEL]
- CONECT (CrFA's Centre of National Excellence) [CRA]
- Franciscania Athletic [ALX]
- Morfaga North Rangers [HAM]

Re: Giorgio Menti Trophy - Invitational Youth Tournament
*Played 27th August*
Maynar Hurricanes 0-1 AC Zimia
With the first game of the GM Trophy kicking off, it was Taeland and Passas being represented as the DaeZoom Arena plays host to Taeland's Maynar Hurricanes and the Passasean AC Zimia. And despite the foreign nature of the teams, it was Maynar Hurricanes who tried to play the Tellian way. AC Zimia dominated possession in the first half, but only managed to have 2 shots on target as Maynar continued to pressurise high up the pitch and defended exactly like most teams in the Serie A. The best chance of the half came from the Taeland side, as Henry Nicholson slipped as he dragged a shot wide after snatching the ball in the middle of the pitch after catching Zimia napping.
The second half was pretty much the same as the first half, although the Hurricanes could not hold the pressure as the game faded, with player's tiring from a battling first half to just stay in the game. And with the tiredness kicking in, they may be ruing their golden missed chance in the first half as Zimia snatched victory late on. A killer ball from skipper John Van Der Heart to Marian Leczynsky allowed a cross to come in the right wing, which was met by the head of Ben Ellsworth, who steered the ball into the net, leaving opposing goalkeeper Gurak Akbarov stunned.
It's a vital 3 points for Zimia, who sit out the next round of games. For Maynar Hurricanes, they will want to forget about that as they will have to face the Shawa Shujima Academy in 2 days time.
Goals:
'79 - ZIM - B. Ellsworth
ODP Ajax 2-2 Shawâ Shujima Academy
Two costly mistakes by Shawa Shujima Academy gifted ODP Ajax a draw following a match that was dominated by one player. Straight from the whistle, it was clear what the Sanillan side wanted to do - attack. And it was all Shawa Shujima in the first 20 minutes, as they dominated possession with Ajax only capable of containing the attack with clearances. However, it was over ambitious play that costed the Sanillans. Having dominated possession for the majority of the first half, the defence was caught napping and as too many players were committed going forward, a mistake from Kaka resulted in dispossession, with Ajax quickly counterattacking, sending the ball high up the pitch to allow Marko Novakovic to knock the ball down to Martin Vanderkaay, who simply ran on to the ball to slot it into the bottom corner of the net.
1-0 and responsible for a costly mistake, it was Kaka who stole the limelight for the rest of the game. The second half showed guts and determination, with one player from the Shawa Shujima Academy lifting the team single handedly to get them back into the game, and perhaps redeeming himself. It duly eventually worked as 15 minutes into the second half, a chase down on a pass back forced an error by ODP Ajax's goalkeeper William Palacio, who's long ball was blocked by Kaka.
The richocheted ball fell to Inaki Solaar, who was quickly outmuscled off the ball by Shuji Pinota who smashed the ball right into the top corner, leaving Palacio red faced and rooted to the spot. Kaka continued to cause trouble, running at defenders and attempting to drag them out of position. And his work duly delivered after winning a free kick from 25 yards out after two Ajax players sandwiching him in an attempt to regain possession. A clever worked free kick by Lisha Huni allowed Mati Kalani to rocket home a goal which went flying into the net, as Shawa Shujima Academy took the lead to go 2-1 up.
But Shawa Shujima's lead did not last as a costly mistake following a miscommunication between both defenders allowed Alessandro Rodriguez to run onto a free ball with an easy shot at goal. The match ended 2-2, but Shawa Shujima will definitely feel more disheartened by the result in a match that they will feel that they should have won.
Goals:
'31 - ODP - M. Vanderkaay.
'60 - SSA - S. Pinota
'68 - SSA - M. Kalani
'83 - ODP - A. Rodriguez
Morfaga North Rangers 0-2 FioreAcademica
Morfaga North Rangers had a tough ask to play in the San Felice against FioreAcademica - who's senior side play in this ground. Morfaga had a decent start, matching the same amount of shots as FioreAcademica in the first half, each accounting to 3 shots each. However, FioreAcademica had a trick up their sleeve. Fielding the fairly youthful side within the first half, the manager decided to send on two of the big guns in the second half, with Alexandrian duo Tamer Modrem and Kumi N'Kosi coming on, with Modrem taking the skipper's armband from Leonardo Bortolotti, who led the team out from the start.
And the effect of having a World Cup finalist in their side was proving to hurt Morfaga, with the young defenders being overly careful on the FC Fiorecittà captain. Unsure whether to mark him tightly or stand off, Modrem's ability to create something out of nothing proved to be the winner, as he curled a shot into the net in the 74th minute, leaving the opposing manager to applaud himself.
The Modrem effect on FioreAcademica continued, as the player continued to cause havoc to the Morfaga defence before placing a through ball for substitute Jan Tórsen to tap the ball into the net to make it 2-0.
While FioreAcademica won the game, Morfaga should take no disappointment from the game and should only learn. After a decent first half, their opponents decided to unleash two of their most experienced young players against a very young side who have probably not played against any players of those qualities previously, and should take the positives in the game as they face another tough team in 2 days time.
Goals:
74' - FCF - T. Modrem
82' - FCF - J. Tórsen
AC Napianeso 1-7 Franciscania
As Morfaga lost to the youth of FC Fiorecittà,the last thing that they wanted to know is their next opponents absolutely ran riot in their group game in Scoglitto. Whilst ODP Ajax managed to put up a decent fight and came out with a point in Group A, the other Napian side had a unwarm welcoming as CTFA Champions League champions Franciscania brushed aside Napianeso 7-1.
With Napianeso sending 2 overaged players, it seemed that age didn't matter for the Franciscania Athletic side, but for what they've won. Franciscania sent a World Cup winning goalkeeper as well as deciding to start 5 players that were in their CTFA Champions League winning side - a decision which many Napianeso players will be feeling unfair about.
And it was the quality of play that costed Napianeso the game. Coming out of the blocks slowly is definitely not to do against a team with confidence, and Roland Théard's early run from left back stunned the Napian defence as an early corner was forced within the first minute of the game. Disorganised and yet again failing the respond, a clever corner that was passed across the ground to the edge of the box allowed Raymond Luxury-Yacht to fire in from 20 yard, taking a deflection along the way. Luxury-Yachts strike was quickly joined by 2 goals in quick succession from Edgard Alonzo, but neither of them matched up to his wonder strike from the Champions League final against Hamstadt.
3-0 up at half time and in the mood, Alexandria were gifted a fourth as Stephane M'Baye was wrestled to the floor, with Gregory Friedrich being sent off after denying the striker a blatant goal scoring opportunity. Edgard Alonzo made no hesitation as he stepped up to score the penalty to complete his hat-trick, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way. 10 men down and 4 up, it looked like it was an easy ride for the Alexandrian side.
However, a costly mistake by Sébastien Lefevre gave Napianeso a goal. A rare breakthrough from Mer Rodwell resulted in a dangerous driven cross, which led to Lefevre scrambling to deal with it, only to make contact and poke it into the back with his own net, leaving veteran Alexandre von Heil very unimpressed. With the glimmer of hope Napianeso received from the own goal, it only turned out to be a mere consolation as late goals from Vincent Chertrand-Pernet, François Rousseau and Stéphane M'Baye completed the rout.
Another interesting fact to point out, Franciscania have really sent out a warning message to all teams in the tournament, after controlling the possession of 73%-27%.

Pinota

Re: Giorgio Menti Trophy - Invitational Youth Tournament
Well, four of Franciscania's goals were scored by players who also scored in the CTFA Champions' League final

Re: Giorgio Menti Trophy - Invitational Youth Tournament
*Played 29 August*
San Pietro 1-0 ODP Ajax
After sitting out the first game, Romero's San Pietro Academy finally kick started their campaign against ODP Ajax. The Napian side drew 2-2 in their last game and will be wanting to add to their point earned a few days ago, but with Romero's youth coach Enzo Pellegrino controlling San Pietro, a typical Tellian game was expected from the home side.
With a very tense atmosphere, both teams were started off uninspiring - no real retention of possession and no real sign of either side wanting to play football. It was until the 38th minute when Alexis Pellegrino took the ball and stormed down the by-line, before crossing the ball low into the box for Gavrel Levandovskiy to direct it into the back of the net.
In typical Tellian fashion, Pellegrino Snr. decided to do what the national side did best. Despite representing Craitland, the coach set the order to close off the game, with San Pietro ending the rest of the match on a solidly stereotypical defensive display. With the constant defending and Ajax being unable to find a breakthrough, their best chance of the game came from a misplaced header by Arne von Schlidt, who gifted the ball to Alessandro Rodriguez, who failed to test the keeper after dragging the shot wide of goal.
Goals:
38' - ROM - G. Levandovskiy
Shawâ Shujima Academy 0-0 Maynar Hurricanes
Following their mistakes in the first game, Shawa Shujima yet again were unlucky to come away with 3 points after Maynar Hurricanes held the Sanillan side to a 0-0 draw.
Shawa Shujima almost went ahead after 5 minutes after a clever dragback from Kaka allowed 'aloni Pula a shot from the edge of the box, only for it to fire at the cross bar. With Shawa Shujima piling the pressure from the off, it took the Hurricanes 10 minutes before the end of the first half to get themselves back into the game, responding with a bright spell with several shots, all of which failed to threaten the goal, with Pula's shot still being the pick out of the efforts in the first half.
The second half continued in the similar way the first half finished with Maynor Hurricanes on top. But yet it was the same story - after several half chances, their best chance of the game fell to Ed Hoczepyan, who took down a marvellous long ball, but could not convert as he ballooned his shot straight into Row Z, with no real threat to Taki Tolaso. However moments later, Tolaso was forced to make a diving save after a driven effort from Norbert Mor from the right side of the midfield forced the Shawa Shujima keeper to dive near post to deny the Hurricanes from going ahead.
With minutes to go, an effort from the recently hyped Kakâ almost put Shawa Shujima ahead after finding the net from a Mati Kalani through ball, only for the decision to be ruled offside. The travelling fans from across the border were left frustrated, with Taki Tolaso also showing his frustration by throwing his gloves onto the ground as the final whistle blew.
Once again Shawa Shujima are wondering why they lost the game despite coming into the game with attacking intent. However following the post match interview Eric Shula said a win is inevitable sooner rather than later - "We're doing all the right things, getting in the right positions, making decent chances. A win is coming, we're doing all the right things."
CONECT 3-1 AC Napianeso
Following their horror start of a campaign with a 7-1 loss to Franciscania, Napianeso wanted to put the game behind them to face CONECT, the Craitish talent school composed of some of the best players in their league. Napianeso would have probably fancied their chances against a side who have hardly trained together as a team, and it proved to be true for their first goal.
The Napians drew first blood after a communication error, with a Mer Rodwell cross from the right leaving CONECT's Tim Ula scrambling and unable to reach the ball, falling to David Jansen, who cleared the ball straight into Amwar Hussain, with the ball ricocheting into the net. Whilst Napianeso's young guns were celebrating, the CONECT players just stared at each other, with none of them able to figure out why or how the goal even happened.
Napianeso almost had a second goal from another mistake from David Jansen, who passed the ball back to Tim Ula short, with Ula having to quickly turn away from Rodriguinho, before clearing the ball high up the field. They continue to threaten; however failed to hit the target, with Amwar Hussain wasting a flurry of chances.
It took CONECT until the second half at the 60th minute to get back into the game with Jan Mikelt taking a chance from 20 yards. The shot deflected in off the defence with Napianeso's goalkeeper Khmer Oze being sent the wrong way as their opponents drew level.
With the score at 1-1, it was the introduction of Lee Geum-Yong who changed the game for the Craitish side. Lee, Xäiville Teflons caused havoc as the defence was shaken by the 20 year old's quick feet. A late challenge from Maarten Sekelaap gifted CONECT a penalty after taking down Nova English Korean player inside the box, only to receive a yellow card.
The penalty gave CONECT the lead after Tim Isrdlvarien rocketed the ball into the top corner, leaving the goalkeeper rooted to his spot. And with the 2 goals to put them back into the game, the Craitish side put the game to bed with 8 minutes from time as Lee Geum-Yong cutted inside to curl the ball into the top corner to give his side a convincing 3-1 victory. Their opponents however will feel annoyed with themselves after letting a 1-0 lead slip as CONECT came back to take the game. This leaves Napianeso in serious trouble, with their next two games being must wins in order for them to remain in the tournament.

60' - CON - J. Mikelt
68' - CON - T. Isrdlvarien (PEN)

Franciscania 0-2 Morfaga North Rangers
Despite winning their opening game 7-1, Franciscania Athletic were left stunned after losing their second game to a battling Morfaga North Rangers.
Vincent Chertrand-Pernet should have given the side the lead after heading a Raymond Luxury free kick onto the crossbar as the majority of Morfaga's defenders were guilty of ball watching as the ball came into the box. Moments later, the CTFA Champions League champions had a penalty shout as Stéphane M'Baye was wrestled to the floor, with the referee waving the match play on as Alfred Heinhorn remained on the pitch after a challenge which might have seen him given red on another day.
Raymond Luxury-Yacht also had another good opportunity from a free kick as John Campbell over committed on Stéphane M'Baye, who must have felt like being in the wars throughout the whole game. With the free kick from 24 yards, the veteran Natopian managed to get the ball to dip over the wall, but couldn't the ball back down as it narrowly grazed the top of the bar as it went over.
With the first half at deadlock and Franciscania dominating the game, the worst thing for the Alexandrian side to do is concede early on in the second half. And with just 2 minutes played, that is exactly what happened. Morfaga came back strongly with a blitzing second half, catching their opponents by surprise with clever one-two interchanges between Richard Mooreland and skipper Gerrald Stone, with the latter finishing off a clever piece of play by lobbing Alexandre von Heil.
With the dominance of possession yet again and outnumbering Morfaga on shots, Franciscania wanted to hit back, taking every chance as it comes. However the Morfaga defence remained strong after going ahead and duly made it difficult for their opponents. On the final minute of play, Franciscania were awarded a corner, committing all their players into the box. With the corner headed away by John Campbell, Mex Pearson carried the ball up to the centre-circle, before kicking the ball an open goal from half way to end the match 2-0.
