Re: 2013 Benacia Cup
Tellian Benacia Cup Squad
Angelo Perrotta has released his Benacia Cup squad earlier today, with a few surprise decisions. With the FMF World Cup shortly following the tournament, Perrotta has opted to rest all of his foreign based players with the exception of captain Sezer Özker being the only foreign based player included in the squad. Whilst the likes of Andrea Luca Peruzzi, Pasquale di Montezemolo, Valérien Hertz etc. are all rested, the tournament gives an opportunity for other players to impress.
There are still a few notable players included in the squad, including defender Marco Schiavvi and Anthony Denoix-Moreau. The main inclusion will as always be Romero's Marko Zajc. Zajc, who was an integral part of the World Cup and Benacia Cup winning sides of last year will once again be the pivotal point of the squad. The midfield of Massimo Santoni, Riccardo Ganau and Isaac Mahler will be equally as pivotal.
The Benacia Cup squad sees a return for Scoglitto duo Aleksandr Terzić and Anton Maria Balducci, who have both impressed the coach over the course of last season. Enrico Teodorici is also recalled to the squad after a good season with LVG, as youngster Mirko Giordano receives his first senior call up to the national side. Giordano, 20, impressed at Romero at the second half of the season, playing in an advanced attacking midfield role. However, it is unknown how his chances will be in the national side with the dominance of Vecchiacittà captain Isaac Mahler in the attacking midfield spot.
It is expected that Perrotta will try to rotate his squad to ensure every player will get a chance to perform in the tournament; and despite the intent of rotation, Tellia should go into the tournament as favourites to lift the trophy. Since the beginning of the World Cup, the side have only lost once in a friendly against Cräiteland, and have won all other games, beating North Antartica 3-1, Lucerne 5-0 and Gerenia 3-0 in their last three matches.
This Tellia side has been dubbed the greatest in both Gaian and Tellian history, with former captain then manager Roberto Vincenzo describing some players being "unplayable" against. Vincenzo, who captained the Gaian side that reached the World Cup final in 2006 told the media, "If I was an opposition player, I would fear this Tellian team. There are so many good players that this team cannot be played against. Santoni is one of the best passers on Micras at the moment, then you have the tireless driven minded Riccardo Ganau. Isaac Mahler has had a good season and has been a very consistent player for the national team and then you have the Zajc and Sezer [Özker] who give defenders a headache. Denoix-Moreau also is a brilliant striker, although he is selfish at times, some strikers need to have that personality to become a top striker."

Re: 2013 Benacia Cup
*Played 6th July*
Sanilla 4-0 Zeeburg
7' - S. Bale
28' - M. Sonetti
59' - N. Kilihi
63' - S. Bale
Sanilla outclassed the hosts in the Benacia Cup's opener thanks to a brace from Sylvester Bale. Before the young Zeeburgers had a chance to get used to their first tournament appearance, Bale headed Sanilla in front. Wim Zneijder's overlapping run was followed by a deep cross and the MMFC forward out-leapt Jos Degroot and found the bottom corner. The second goal was placed in twenty minutes later with Bale's strike partner Mariolino Sonetti latching on to Nishi Kilihi's squared ball to sidefoot around Van Der Haagge.
After the break, Kilihi added a third just before the hour mark. Sonetti was played-in by Petro Gjanocca, but had his effort parried by Van Der Haagge straight into Kilihi's path, where the Hammish-based midfielder smashed into an empty net. Four minutes later, Bale scored his second and the team's fourth with another header. This time, the cross came in from the left, with Vernon Cristaldo chipping forward to Bale, who glanced the ball up and over the 'keeper's outstretched hand and in. The score, unfortunately for the hosts, reflected the one-sidedness of the match, as Zeeburg's only chance on target was Kevin Degroot's long-range curler, which was tipped wide by Taki Tolâso. The hosts will have to find some high quality performances for their remaining games to take something from this tournament, while Sanilla will be glad to have passed the first hurdle with no troubles.
Sorry for the short reports - not had much free timeShireroth 1-1 Tellia
70' - M. Santoni
88' - S. Liurion
Shireroth's late strike foiled a Tellian victory as the spoils were shared in the cup's other opening fixture. The first half was tense, with both teams looking to keep a hold of a clean sheet for as long a time as possible. Tellia's most notable opportunities fell to Anthony Denoix-Moreau, who had both a left- and right-footed effort fly into the Shirerithians' side netting without causing much trouble. Shireroth had a shot saved by Di Maggio which bounced up onto the crossbar before being cleared, and Kurt Lamberti chipped a shot over the bar from close range for their closest efforts of the half.
The clean sheets were upheld for the first parts of the second half, despite the teams' best efforts. Marko Zajc and Sezer Özker both had shots from distance which were put just over the bar for Tellia, with Shireroth's Lamberti having a header caught and Jóhann Viðarsson's low shot deflected wide. As stern as the Shirerithian defence was, they were eventually broken-down on the 70th minute. Marko Zajc showed his skill with a "carousel" past Nuno Santos Gomez before picking-out Massimo Santoni, who hit a hard, out-swinging daisy-cutter into the bottom-left corner with du Nigrad helpless. The Tellians were unable to keep their lead until the end, though, thanks to sub Sdeli Liurion. The JHI-LK forward replaced Jalal Akwá near the end, and picked his chance perfectly to touch past Ricardo Lavichelli and put the ball through Di Maggio's legs and into the net from ten yards out. While Tellia would have preferred a win in their title defence's first game, a draw was probably the fairest result, and will give Shireroth a helpful point to build on next round.

*Played 9th July*
Zeeburg 0-3 Shireroth
21' - K. Lamberti
57' - K. Lamberti
83' - K. Lamberti
Kurt Lamberti's hat-trick of headers exposed a gaping flaw in Zeeburg's defence as Shireroth swept past the hosts with ease. In a match where Zeeburg offered little in attack, aiming for damage limitations, the Sverige Tiem forward put the visitors ahead thanks to a glancing header from Talsin Llwrran's front-post corner. Despite a number of other attacks, Shireroth could only maintain a one-goal lead into the second half. Lamberti added a second within 15 minutes of the restart, stepping back to find space to head across the face of goal and into the opposite corner from Llwrran's deep cross from the bye-line. Zeeburg tightened their lines after the second goal, but were helpless to concede a third near the end. A clipped forward pass from Jóhann Viðarsson found sub Gary Smith, who tried to nod the ball through to Lamberti's run but instead diverted it up into the air in the box. Lamberti was able to readjust and made contact with the falling ball with his head, putting it into the ground as it rebounded up and through the arms of Jo Van Der Haagge into the top of the goal. Overall, a standard result for the match, but Zeeburg will need to focus on crosses having now conceded five headed goals in two games.
Ashkenatza 1-0 Sanilla
36' - F. Bruno
Ashkenatza opened their 2013 Benacia Cup account with a single-goal victory of top-of-the-group Sanilla thanks to Frenkel Bruno. The Vecchiacittà Calcio target forward scored the game's only goal in the first half with a solo effort. In a darting run in from the left, Bruno beat Wim Zneijder and Kirk Harmett as he made his way into the box to then fool Taki Tolâso into moving the wrong way to try to block his slow sidefoot finish into the net. Sanilla, off the back of a 4-0 win over the hosts, were unable to threaten the goal as much this time, but had Ben Szhmuel to curse as he expertly tipped Mariolino Sonetti's rocketed shot just over the angle of post and bar in the early stages of the second half. As Bruno continues to impress his potential suitors, Sanilla now have a bye round to regroup before taking-on rivals Shireroth next.

Re: 2013 Benacia Cup
*Played 12th July*
Shireroth 2-1 Ashkenatza
44' - K. Lamberti
63' - G. Levandovskiy
78' - Legus
Kurt Lamberti continued his scoring form as Shireroth won a close encounter to keep them top of the group. In a highly-strung first half, the main talking points were the tackles flying-in from both teams. Ashkenatza had Paul Epstein booked, while Shirerithian Nuno Santos Gomez received the same treatment. With both sides cancelling each other out in the midfield, opportunities at goal were limited. Dovid Tzipris had a long-range shot saved by Alejian du Nigrad near the end of the half, but Shireroth went ahead a matter of minutes later. Following his hat-trick against Zeeburg, Lamberti was picked-out at close range by Martyn Toltenaki's pull-back to tap-in ahead of Iser Schuldberg in defence a minute before the break. As the game remained close into the second half, it was the Ashkenatzis who made the most of their chances. With Frenkel Bruno hitting the post with a header soon after the restart, his strike partner Gavrel Levandovskiy drew level with 63 played. Bruno played a part, using his strength to force his way past Alexander Bonero before slotting a cross in at waist height for Levandovskiy to swivel his hips and strike in from the centre of the area unmarked. With the score equal, Shireroth stepped-up a gear, as Jóhann Viðarsson made a series of successful passes to set-up shots which just missed the target. The Shirerithians eventually made the most of their chances, and from an unlikely source. Midfielder Legus, appearing in his first ever tournament, was at hand to finish off a rapid move which passed through Viðarsson, Lamberti, Talsin Llwrran and Viðarsson again before bobbling to Legus, whose first-time strike from the corner of the six-yard box skipped off the turf and in. The final ten minutes were nervy for Shireroth, but some important clearances were enough to maintain the lead and bring a second consecutive win.
Tellia 6-0 Zeeburg
11' - M. Zajc
13' - I. Mahler
49' - M. Zajc
57' - A. Denoix-Moreau
62' - A. Denoix-Moreau
84' - A. Uggè
Tellia made a record scoreline for the Benacia Cup thanks to two braces against the forlorn hosts. As most had expected from Zeeburg's previous two performances, Tellia were by far the dominant team throughout the entire match. Marko Zajc set the tone after the first ten minutes with a strike from distance that evaded Van Der Haagge down to his left, and fellow midfielder Isaac Mahler doubled the lead two minutes later with a far-too-easy run through the centre unchallenged to sidefoot into the right side of the net. Despite the early sparks, the Tellians took a while to add to their lead, remaining two-up for the rest of the first half without being threatened by Zeeburg. Zajc soon made amends for the slowness, however, as he put his second away within five minutes of the second half starting. Mahler again created space easily and saw Jos Degroot out of position as he chipped the ball over to Zajc, who controlled on the volley to set himself up for a nice finish past the reach of Van Der Haage. With the hour mark approaching, and Tellia in the comfort zone, Zajc and Sezer Özker were chosen to be rested ahead of Monday's game, being replaced by Anthony Denoix-Moreau and Armando Uggè. Denoix-Moreau was the first to make an impact, with his first touch, as he got his head onto an out-swinging corner to find the top-left of the net and make it four. Within five minutes, the FC Fiorecittà forward had a second. Linking-up with Uggè, a little one-two around Steven De Gans put "ADM" in the clear and took his chance well with a lob over the 'keeper and in. With a fifth in the bag, Tellia were in no rush to exhaust themselves and little happened until the last few minutes when Uggè was rewarded for his previous assist, tucking a clever flick inside the front post as Massimo Santoni smashed the ball across the area hoping for a touch. In all, not a shock result, but Tellia will be happy to not have any shots on target against them all match as Zeeburg must be aiming just to score a goal by the end of this tournament now.
Re: 2013 Benacia Cup
Riots occur in Zeeburg as Tellian and Ashkenatzi fans clash once again
With the clash between Tellia and Ashkenatza quickly approaching, there seems to be more turmoil as clashes between both sets of fans. A similar clash occurred in the last Benacia cup, and it appeared that there was a case of deja vu with an almost identical incident happening at a local bar near the Van Den Braendestadion, which hosts the match between the two respective sides tomorrow.
It was believe that the clashes started as early as 3PM in the evening, with police reacting slowly to the incidents as larger groups started to emerge, resulting into rockets being exchanged with furniture and beer glasses being propelled targeting opposing fans. A local resident who witnessed the incident told reporters that the scenes were "horrific" and has never seen anything this violent in Zeeburg.
Unlike last year, the Tellians are now becoming increasingly frustrated with their governance and are there are a large proportion who seek an independence movement. It was believed that Ashkenatzi fans were provoked by a small set of ultra Tellian fans flying the new provisional Tellian national flag, which led to further confrontation between sets of fans. A small number of Tellians then threw a flare towards the Ashkenatzi fan base in retaliation to the confrontation, which subsequently led to a brawl involving items being thrown and violent scenes nearby the stadium.
As police arrived later on, it is believed that up to 20 fans have been arrested, with another 150 hospitalised following the violent scenes. Last year, the clashes between fans subsequently led to the withdrawal of Haskel Bernstein and Isaac Mahler from the starting squads in fear of a backlash from the supporters of both teams, although their has no confirmation that any player has decided to take any similar measure ahead of this year's match.
The FGGC (Tellian FA) have subsequently released a statement, condemning the violent activity seen between the supporters and trust the local authorities to take necessary measures and actions against those who have caused the scenes in Zeeburg. Furthermore, the association also stated that they will co-operate with the local authorities and support any charge claims against those partaking in such activities, and extends their co-operation further with actions back in Tellia if also necessary.

Re: 2013 Benacia Cup
Bernstein and Mahler withdraw from Tellian Squad following clashes
Following the clashes between Ashkenatzi and Tellian fans, the Tellia FA (FGGC) have confirmed that both Isaac Mahler and Haskel Bernstein have both withdrawn from the squad for tomorrow's game against Ashkenatza. This is due to the same reason as the 2012 Benacia Cup where similar rioting scenes were encountered between both sets of fans, and both players do not feel safe and fear hostility from supporters from both sides should they elect to play for the match.
Bernstein and Mahler, who both started the last two games against Shireroth and Zeeburg, constitute as a minority of Ashkenatzi Jewish players who have opted to play for the Tellian national side. However with the fragile relations between both sets of supporters, the players have handed in their requests to sit out the game due to a fear of their personal safety should they play the game. Instead, both players are expected to remain in the confinements of the Tellian training camp and will not be travelling to the stadium.
Vecchiacittà captain Mahler, spoke to the media, admitting his frustration and anger with the clashes. The attacking midfielder told MicraSport, "it's ridiculous to see how politics still mixes with sport even when there is no space for politics in sport. I may be a Jewish player, but I represent Tellia and if I had to choose a team to win, it would obviously be Tellia."
The 22 year old continued to slam the Zeeburg police for not reacting quickly to the violence. He added, "although the fans are largely to blame, the local police also have some blame in the incident. Had they responded quicker, then maybe not that many people would be injured and having to be treated in hospital. Moving aside though, this is nothing to do with our teams. We are here to do one thing - and that is play football."
Earlier today, clashes between fans resulted in a large number of people being injured and treated in hospital as 20 others have been arrested for their participation in the violent events.

Re: 2013 Benacia Cup
Minor humble submission - might one, currently unmentioned Shirerithian player, be replaced by a violent Elw-Babkhi player called Peyman Eslamzadeh (source)? This would allow us to talk about the significance of this being the first major football tournament Shireroth is in since Elwynn was reabsorbed into the Imperial Republic. Thanks for your consideration
Edit: Heck, one player could even die of an overdose of fermented mango spirit or something to free up a space on the squad.
