Alexandria vs. North Antarctica (22/01)
Alexandria 3-2 North Antarctica
15' - Álexis C.
48' - W. Maynard
56' - J. Gonzales
73' - T. Modrem
83' - T. Modrem
A Tamer Modrem double in the closing stages saved the Alexandrians' blushes as North Antarctica threatened to run away with the spoils of a comeback. The home side got-off to a perfect start thanks to Álexis Carrasco's well-placed first-time finish around Quentin Markhams after breaking the offside trap. Alexandria maintained the advantage for the rest of the half, but found it difficult to increase their lead in most part due to strict defending by the visitors. North Antarctica shifted focus straight after the break and this paid-off almost immediately, as William Maynard slammed in an equaliser within three minutes, finding space after receiving strike partner Ishmael Kazenaghi's squared ball before putting it well out of the 'keeper's reach. Kazenaghi got his second assist of the game less then ten minutes later, as he played-in Jonathan Gonzales with a clever knock back from deep in the area. Gonzales had the easy task of finding the back of the mostly-empty net from around twelve yards with a simple side-foot in space. Going behind kicked the Alexandrians into gear, however, and star man Tamer Modrem was at hand to bring the scores level again with just under twenty to go as he poked home with an outstretched foot after Florent Lassana-Traoré's cross was deflected across the face of the net. As the game neared its end, there was enough time for a winner thanks, again, to Modrem. The midfielder produced a split-second of magic to turn past marker Ezeo Maartens and touched inside the area with his momentum allowing him to shoot low across his body. With Markhams unsuspecting, the ball skipped off the turf into the bottom-left with the stopper unable to bring himself into a dive in time to make a save. With the final whistle, Alexandria breathed a sigh of relief after saving a home loss, with North Antarctica savouring an impressive four away goals against tough opposition in the space of a week.
