Zandarijn vs. Thracistan friendly (22/05)
*Played 22nd May*
Zandarijn 1-1 Thracistan
42' - D. Lavan-Olsen
65' - A. Yıldırım
Thracistan's trip to Hamstadt saw them come home with an impressive draw to their name after coming from behind against a Zandt side already preparing for the World Cup this summer. Zandarijn were frustrated by the Thraci in the first half, as the visitors' improved defensive organisation allowed few chances on goal for a team which has averaged over three per game throughout qualifying. The usually effective Dieter Maritzburg was marked well by Hamza Dankuduro, while wingers Daniël Lavan-Olsen and Freddie ten Brincklen struggled to keep the ball against Thracistan's full-backs. Lavan-Olsen, however, was the player to make the breakthrough just before half time - following a barren domestic season with HóC - with a free-kick of the highest order being cannoned into the right-hand side of Berkay Şanlı's net from beyond the "D" after a foul on Jón Dannehl. Thracistan's resilience continued after the break as they didn't allow the goal to be a springboard for the Zandts, and managed to bring the scores level again during a period of fluid play and chance creation. A move forward from Hasan Gini led to a corner from a blocked cross, which Tırak Emrenin delivered into the box for Eden Valbuena to header towards the goal. The initial effort was saved well by Robert Demel, but spilled straight to Alpay Yıldırım in the mêlée and the midfielder poked home instinctively. Despite equalising, Thracistan were then subject to increased Zandt pressure for the final twenty minutes, though the home side were unable to amend the score before full time - Lavan-Olsen went closest with another free-kick effort, but this time shot just shy of the far post.
A tie against a team with an unbeaten record in the qualifiers so far can be seen a big step up for Thracistan, and a turnaround on a convincing loss two weeks ago to Coria, who could see a lot of action this summer as teams organise their pre-tournament friendlies. Zandarijn may look at this result as a potential easy victory squandered, knowing the level of opponent they will have to face in Birgeshir in a matter of months, and with a tricky visit to an Athlon side that still holds an outside hope of joining them in the finals left, a first loss of the year could be likely if concentration lapses in a fortnight's time.
