MacLeod could have done better but he did keep it out initially, poor defending left Zajc unmarked to put away the rebound. It's a really harsh way to lose for Hamland. They looked the better team in the first half and then were stunned with the goal.Duke_J wrote:An awfull move from the 'keeper and once again, our hands go empty It seems we are in the place of Spain before South Africa...

I was supporting Tellia, and it was like watching England play at times. Good luck to both teams in the final! Comiserations Hamland, although you guys can look forward to the match that nobody wants to play against Antica

Hosts and this year's surprise package Antica faced-off against last year's third placers Hamland in the match which nobody wants to be playing in after missing-out on the final. Antica, who have been winning as many fans as they have critics with their brand of "AntiFootball", have found a formula which, despite not scoring many goals, has seen them advance from the group stages and even past the quarter-finals in only their second ever tournament. Their achievement is made even more impressive when you consider that in the 2010 qualifiers, the team finished rock bottom of their group with only one point! Hamland, on the other hand, are one of the World Cup's "big boys", finishing runners-up two years ago and third last year. Hamland's tournament was full of ups prior to the semi-finals, coming through their group with three wins and surviving a testing quarter-final after extra time before only losing 1-0 to a spirited Tellia side.Spoiler!
Both teams lined-up with the same teams they used in their respective semi-finals; both clearly looking to gain some pride in finishing third. Antica were hoping to keep-up their run of low-scoring matches with a strong defence, but their plans came unstuck within the first few minutes as Andrew Miller scored with the Hamlanders' first attack. Jules Scott was influential in midfield as he caught Alexander Kern on the back foot, skipping past him, before tapping a sweet through ball with the outside of his boot to Miller. The young Craitish-based forward hit it first time from just inside the box and the ball rocketed into the top-left corner as Nigel Newman could only watch. Without being able to forge any reflection of the solidity that has treated them so well so far this year, Antica went two down fifteen minutes later. Miller's selflessness was key this time, laying a hard, low ball across the Antican box after being put through very close to the bye-line, for Benjamin Craig to side-foot in from a few yards out into a half-empty net for his fourth strike of the tournament. Following Hamland's second goal, Antica had a few chances themselves, but Bob Ends and Curtis O'Toole were thwarted by the swift closing-down of Rodney MacLeod in goal. Hamland were able to score a third ten minutes before the break, again through Benjamin Craig. The Morfaga North Rangers forward found a gap in the Antican defence to exploit with a good step back as Eric Heinhorn's deep freekick forward curled into the area. Craig was first to react to the ball's unexpected swerve, moving further from goal to line-up a powerful header which went into the ground before bouncing its way through the crowd and into the top corner by an unguarded post. Craig's fifth goal of the competition put him second on the top scorers list.
After half time, Antica's defence seemed to recover well, keeping out a number of deadly-looking Hammish breaks thanks to good clearances and tackles from veteran Roman Abrahmov and young talent Winston Genz. Left-back Marcelo Monaco was also praised by the home crowd for his acrobatic diving header to clear away an Eric Heinhorn effort from a corner, despite the Hammish star's header looking to be going wide. The home team also had a couple of decent efforts to get on the scoresheet, but Ends' close-range header was parried behind and a hardly-struck free-kick from the boot of Bob Eteander skimmed the outside of the post as it went out, with the Hammish players unreacting. Eventually, and against the run of play, Hamland did add a fourth. Heinhorn, who is hotly-tipped to be announced as player of the tournament, was again involved, putting in a decisive tackle in the middle of the park to regain position and start an attack which was finished by Miller for his second of the night. Following Heinhorn's tackle, Scott played it back to the 24 year-old, who picked-out substitute Kieran Crooks with a chipped ball forward. Crooks headed the ball into the path of the on-rushing Miller with his first touch and Miller almost looked to repeat his first strike. However, the youngster feined a belter, softly controlling it as he ran and fooling Abrahmov, before taking it forward and slotting very well past Newman with his weak foot inside the near post. Following his first touch, it was only a mater of minutes before Crooks put one in the net and got his second of the competition. The 22 year-old picked-up a slow Heinhorn pass and injected pace to take him past Abrahmov and into acres of space. Newman tried his best to narrow the angle, but Crooks had too much time on his side and easily side-footed down the 'keeper's left after Newman hinted at which way he was going to commit.
Even at 5-0 down, Antica were still value for money, and could have gained a consolation or two if it weren't for some bad finishing. Strangely enough, it was Ends and O'Toole, the only players to score for Antica all tournament, who were the guilty suspects when it came to inaccurate shooting, with the former shooting high and wide from a very promising position in the box with ten minutes left and the latter heading straight into MacLeod's arms from a corner very close to goal with much of the net open. The Antican fans, by the end, were just happy to see their team playing in a match of such high prestige; something they never thought would happen and especially not in their back yard. Hamland, however, must settle with a second consecutive third-place finish; becoming the first team other than Craitland to finish in the same position twice at the FMF World Cup, but must take a lot of inspiration for the EMU's and next year's World Cup with what is still a relatively young team doing so well.

2012 FMF World Cup Final Preview
We are only moments away from the World Cup final. In what will be the second World Cup final for both teams, one thing that we guarantee will be a new World Cup winner. Over the last few years (with the exception of 2009) we have seen a Cräitish golden generation dominating the footballing scene on Micras.
Many people were wondering how long the Craitish could keep it going and if anyone, then who could stop them? The answer: Alexandria. The Alexandrians came into the tournament with a strong squad and although there were a few new faces and some injury concerns throughout their campaign, Les Bleus managed to go through the whole campaign unbeaten. After 3 straight wins in the group stages, the Alexandrians were the ones to face Craitland in the quarter-finals. Although many predicted Craitland would edge through as they did in 2011, the Alexandrians came out and sprung a surprise. An early goal from Florent Lassana-Traoré shook the confidence of the Craitish team, which led to further goals, comfortably beating the reigning champions 3-0. The semi-finals saw a clash against hosts Antica, and despite Antica continuing their organisation, the Alexandrians found a way through with Florent Lassana-Traoré once again, edging out the hosts 1-0. Last time they got into the final was in 2009, where they won the trophy.
In contrast, their opposition are the Tellians - appearing in their first final as Tellia. The last time they experienced a World Cup final was in the inaugural 2006 FMF World Cup where they were known as Gaia, where they were shocked as the favourites by a determined Beaugian team as they lost 1-0. Since then, a new generation has come through and they are finally starting to take shape. Tellia progressed through the groups, winning each of their games 2-0 (beating Craitland in the process), before facing a revenge clash with Shireroth in the semi-finals. Unsurprisingly, goals from Marko Zajc and Gianluca Salmoiraghi resulted in a 2-0 victory before an unconvincing semi-final display against Hamland. Despite Hamland setting The Verdi on the back foot, a shock horror moment from the Hammish defence allowed Marko Zajc a free shot at goal following a rebound, a mistake which costed Hamland the game after a 1-0 result.
Either way, for either side to win the tournament tonight, either of them will break records. Alexandria have gone the entire campaign, including qualification unbeaten. Should they go on to win tonight, they will become the first team to become unbeaten throughout an entire campaign which includes both World Cup qualification and the World Cup finals. On the other hand, Tellia have gone through the whole tournament without conceding a goal so far. If they keep another clean sheet either by winning the game or dragging it to penalties following a goalless game, they will become the first team to go through the entire tournament without conceding a goal. Whoever wins, they will become the first team to win all their games in the tournament. Previously, teams who finished the groups with maximum points could not progress past the quarter-finals; however both these finalists have broke the curse by reaching the final.
Team News
Alexandria will look to play 4-1-2-1-2, with Cyril Kopaczewski leading the way as the skipper in the heart of the defence. Diego Pedro will start in goal, whilst new boy Maxime Sion has impressed at RB alongside Kopaczewski, Ibrahima Diarra and Manuel Pegazo.
Jean-Pierre D'Oliviera wins his battle in a late fitness test and will play in the attacking midfield role behind the two strikers. Leading the frontline will be the tournament's leading goalscorer Florent Lassana-Traoré, with Tamer Modrem being pushed up to partner him from the midfield. Despite Modrem being pushed up, Edgard Alonzo has recovered and will be available from the bench after being ruled out for the previous games due to an injury picked up in the group stages.
In the opponent's dressing room, Tellia have no injury concerns and will look to play 4-2-3-1, with captain Sezer Özker being deployed up front. Elsewhere it remains familiar although René Sgarbini is chosen ahead of both Riccardo Ganau and Leonardo Bortolotti to partner Massimo Santoni in the defensive midfield positions.
Both teams will look to play similar styles of football. It can be said that these two sides like to keep possession of the ball and are two of the best passing teams on Micras. However there are slight differences in their approach to the game. Didier Lozach has organised his Alexandrian team to try to variate the passing and look to build up from side-to-side, and try to make the use of the wings where Khalid Mohamed and Javier Santos. Yannick Ancelin has benefited Les Bleus by coming into the team with a playmaking role and the Ibelin midfielder is staking his claim as a replacement for former captain Francesc Xavier Alonso.
Angelo Perrotta on the other hand sets his team on solid, organised defending. Whilst their opposition like to press high up the pitch, Tellia will always try to get as many players behind the ball in order to win it back. Instead of trying to play it side-to-side, their build up will usually start from the back, with the ball being played all the way back to start an attack. Both teams however, will look to be very counter-attacking and will like to play the ball short and quickly.
This is undoubtedly going to be a tight game and you can not tell how either team will approach the game. Whilst the Alexandrians will want to dominate, they will know that the Tellians are going to be even more difficult to break down than the Anticans in the semi-final; however if they lose the ball, the Tellians are also very good at keeping the ball. Tellia, who lacked dominance in the previous game against Hamland will also be very cautious with Alexandria's threats with the likes of D'Oliviera, Modrem and Lassana-Traoré. Although they do have threats themselves, with Zajc and Salmoiraghi being played on the flanks to cut in and support Özker up front. It may be a game that goes down to the defensive displays, with the likes of Pasquale di Montezemolo/Marco Schiavvi and Cyril Kopaczewski/Ibrahima Diarra depended on to stop any of their oppositions attacks. And it may also go down the goalkeepers as both Diego Pedro and Simone Di Maggio cannot afford any mistake between the sticks.
Whatever happens, it does look like a mouth-watering game on paper, with two very strong line-ups. Let's hope that it doesn't disappoint!
Predicted Line-ups:
Alexandria (4-1-2-1-2): 13 D Pedro; 2 M Sion, 5 C Kopaczewski (capt), 6 I Diarra, 3 M Pegazo; 17 Y Ancelin; 9 K Mohamed, 12 J Santos; 4 J P D'Oliviera, 11 F Lassana-Traoré, 8 T Modrem.
Tellia (4-2-3-1): 12 S Di Maggio; 2 V Hertz, 4 P di Montezemolo, 5 M Schiavvi, 3 A De Laurentiis; 10 M Santoni, 6 R Sgarbini; 7 M Zajc, 8 I Mahler, 17 G Salmoiraghi; 7 S Özker (capt).

YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!
Oh, the irony that the top scorer of the tournament is the only one to miss in the shoot-out!

Also, am I right in thinking that the next FMF World Cup will be held in the CTFA confederation, as they last hosted it back in the 2009?
