Re: 2014 FMF World Cup - official reports and broadcasts
Team previews - Group A
Craitland
Background: Four-time winners of the World Cup, and are seemingly always in the mix. A few notable changes from squads of old as the "golden generation" begins to dwindle-down. Off the back of a second EMU group exit, they'll be expecting to fare better in Indokistan.
Star man: Hänä Zensen. Has now completely nailed-down a key starting place for both Cherry Trees and Craitland and is showing what he can do when given responsibility. Without him gelling the midfield, the team just wouldn't be as effective.
One to watch: Ĵulian Ólsen. The 20 year-old is well-involved with the national team and is seen as a natural successor to Yaqin Senovichi. Should feature as a substitute, and may earn a chance to start if the group goes well for Craitland.
Prediction: As likely as they are to advance, a potential banana skin could await them in the second round. If they top the group, they should find a route to the semi-finals.
Elwynn
Background: Making their World Cup début after finishing second in the Benacia Cup. Coming here with relatively low expectations, but have good form through qualifying.
Star man: Yngvi Miskjalendzki. The team's main forward threat and a dangerous target man on both the ground and in the air.
One to watch: Dario Sakhimzedeh. Scored a consolation in the Benacia Cup final against Tellia and will be hoping to add to his international account.
Prediction: Will most likely battle with North Antarctica for the group's second knock-out spot. They may see the quarter-finals, if they combine performance with luck.
Indokistan
Background: Had never come close to qualifying for a finals tournament before being awarded hosting this year. Will be hoping to emulate Amokolia's 2008 performance as major underdog hosts.
Star man: Tian Abdurahman. The side's captain and talisman. Will be expected to perform down the right wing and deliver chances for the forwards.
One to watch: Nabil Ihsan. At only 16 and based down in the Senyan third tier, he may not have pedigree, but is seen as the country's football prodigy and is listed to start.
Prediction: They could be in a tougher group, but are still the lowest ranked, so taking more than a couple of points should be seen as a great achievement for this upcoming footballing nation.
North Antarctica
Background: Got to the quarter-finals in their first World Cup last year, losing on penalties to Craitland, and runners-up this year in the Copa Apollonia. Many are expecting to see them advance from the group without too many problems.
Star man: William Maynard. If he can continue the goalscoring form he showed in Gerenia last month, he could propel the team to some high scores.
One to watch: Jonathan Fiorentino. Although there are no new faces in the Napian squad, Fiorentino is a striking option who may come in handy from the bench.
Prediction: A chance to make a second quarter-finals will only be quashed if Elwynn perform well.

Re: 2014 FMF World Cup - official reports and broadcasts
Team previews - Group B
Birgeshir
Background: Making their World Cup bow this year after two years of strong development in the CTFA. Finished a strong third place in CiboTap this year.
Star man: Benatehhor Ёkınojk. Having recently changed his name, the Hammish-based forward is the team's biggest threat in the final third.
One to watch: Ætaňur Chanojk. Hitting his prime right as the tournament starts and was an influential signing for Rosenborg City last year.
Prediction: This will be a tightly-fought group, but a repeat of some of the performances the team produced in qualifying could see Birgeshir through to the knock-out rounds by a narrow margin.
Mercury
Background: Current EMU champions and runners-up last year, the next thing on Mercury's radar is winning the World Cup. A young team which has been developing together from strength to strength are favourites to top this group.
Star man: Joe Foxon. An easy selection as the team's talisman captain. Very little to say other than what's been said already.
One to watch: Addey Hanbury. Challenging with a number of players to partner Foxon, but a tie-up with Wilmont Fizeau-Blake could open a few doors.
Prediction: While not expected to stumble at the group stage, the quarter-finals could be tricky, but a semi-final appearance is a must.
Safiria
Background: Another nation who are on virgin territory at the World Cup, but a fourth-placed finish at the Copa Apollonia will give them some inspiration.
Star man: Sila Meþry. An important figure in the Safirians' back trio, and the team will need her to be at her best against a number of proven strikers in the group.
One to watch: Yveltal. A newcomer to the set-up and thrown-in to start - her domestic performances suggest it should be more make than break.
Prediction: Similar to Birgeshir, they will find they way out of the group if they can reproduce their home form in qualifying.
Taeland
Background: Although feeling like tournament regulars now in the EMU's, this is only their second World Cup. Conceded ten goals in their group games last time and will want people to forget about that.
Star man: Tim Turner. The only player to have scored in every tournament Taeland have played in. A jewel of a player in an otherwise rocky team.
One to watch: Ellin Moliksen. Young, quick and serves Turner on a plate more often than not. Could be integral to making the Taes' defensive formation work well going forward.
Prediction: While they should be better value for money than three years ago, they should struggle against Safiria and Birgeshir and probably won't go through.

Re: 2014 FMF World Cup - official reports and broadcasts
Team previews - Group C
Alexandria
Background: One win, one second, one third. Alexandria are one of the most successful World Cup nations, and are being tipped as favourites by some.
Star man: Tamer Modrem. A surprise to think that he's still only 23, but the natural successor to Sébastien Focán has outdone his idol in achievements already, and has only just started.
One to watch: Roland Théard. With Pegazo not in the team, the left-back spot is Théard's to take ownership of for the foreseeable future with some good performances here.
Prediction: Alexandrians will see anything other than a second title as a negative. They may be dumped at the quarter-finals given who they are likely to face, however.
Interland
Background: Their EMU 2013 triumph may have been a last hurrah for the aging Interlandians, but you can never rule them out of the competition with the firepower they have.
Star man: Dariusz Drzewny. Has matured greatly into a quality central midfielder and his distribution is vital to how the team plays.
One to watch: Jan Kepp. There are no unexpected talents in Interland's team anymore, but Jan Kepp still manages to stay at the top of his game no matter what.
Prediction: Previous years would have seen Interland straight through the group, but new emerging powers like Senya will be looking for some scalps and Interland could be at risk.
Senya
Background: Yet more newcomers to the World Cup, with two Copa Apollonia third-places under their belt. Have a team as passionate as their fans and will bring substance which their atmosphere.
Star man: Barnaby Hands. Captain, most caps, highest scorer, 17 years-old. The physical embodiment of Senyan football will relish a first World Cup.
One to watch: Gatkan Mena. Almost the forgotten man in the Senyan midfield five, but his subtle approach to the game in comparison to other younger players has garnered him many fans.
Prediction: Will be difficult to outdo Interland and Zandarijn, but the Senyan fans will want to see at least one knock-out game first time round.
Zandarijn
Background: Last year's home quarter-final appearance was their best in two attempts. Have reached the last two CiboTap finals without breaking much of a sweat.
Star man: Daniël Lavan-Olsen. Despite a torrid domestic season, he is still the Zandts' golden boy and easily the most naturally gifted player in the squad.
One to watch: Chris van der Schouw. Now thirty, he has had a purple patch of late and is now used as the team's lone forward for most starting line-ups ahead of Tyas and Van Hajn.
Prediction: This will be a much harder group to advance from compared to last year's, and they may head into the last game with nothing but third in the group to fight for if things start poorly.

Re: 2014 FMF World Cup - official reports and broadcasts
Team previews - Group D
Austbard
Background: Now with the experience of two EMU appearances under their belt, a solid team that could affect how this group finishes.
Star man: Eiman Torinal. Strong striker who can terrorise even the best defences. Captains the side as well.
One to watch: Karamello Primeldonk. Remember the name, if you can. A great deep-lying midfield prospect who is not afraid of a tackle or two.
Prediction: Unlikely to reach the knock-out rounds in their first appearance given the rest of the group, but won't be a push-over by any stretch of the imagination.
Gerenia
Background: The last of seven début teams, and the new champions of the AEFA. Looking to springboard off their new title and make an impact in Indokistan.
Star man: Zelmar Toscano. The quintessential number ten was the catalyst in the Copa Apollonia final and is in great form at the perfect time.
One to watch: Zorau Pánchaster. Matches Toscano's attacking intent with his desire to drop back and help the defence out when needed. Could show how good a partnership theirs is.
Prediction: Tellia and Hamland are massive favourites to go through this group, but that could work in Gerenia's favour with the pressure off them for results and a freedom to play.
Hamland
Background: Current holders and aiming for a fifth straight semi-final appearance. Few would bet against them doing that, and with very good reason.
Star man: Andrew Miller. Stormed League 1's scoring charts last season and continued his prowess in front of goal at international level. His understanding with Craig is the team's joie de vivre.
One to watch: Robert Peck. Started for the team in the EMU's and performed consistently. May not appear much behind Jules Scott but should be given a chance on the pitch.
Prediction: Depending on where they finish in the group, Alexandria may be waiting in the quarter-finals and that could make a classic match of two favourites.
Tellia
Background: Complete domination of the WMFA, but have not reached the semi-finals other than when they were champions in 2012. Will be wanting to fix that with the squad they can boast.
Star man: Marko Zajc. Sezer Özker and he seem to switch between who's best, but have yet to manage to get it at the same time. Zajc is currently the man well and truly in-form.
One to watch: Luigi Donatello. The young hothead forward may be on his way out of his domestic club before long; showing how much he's matured here will help him no bounds.
Prediction: Along with Hamland, expected to advance and more. A match against Alexandria would repeat the 2012 final in the first knock-out game if set-up.

Re: 2014 FMF World Cup - official reports and broadcasts
*Played 3rd August*
Birgeshir 2-1 Taeland
13' - E. Moliksen
37' - B. Ёkınojk
70' - Æ. Chanojk
Birgeshir came away from a tight game with three valuable points over a Tae team which started well. Taeland's last World Cup opening match was a 4-1 defeat at the hands of a Shireroth side that made its way to the final on home soil, but a repeat of that score looked highly unlikely after a positive start to the game. Birgeshir's narrow formation was stretched by Taeland's five-man midfield from the off and Ellin Moliksen needed only 13 minutes to hit the back of the net after a flowing move saw a few passes threaded around the box before the right-winger tucked the ball inside the opposite post with his weaker foot. The Taes' control in the middle of the park should have arguably led to another goal before the half-hour, but Tim Turner had his curled shot swatted away by Ilkin Ercanojk. Against the run of play, just before the break, Birgeshir equalised. Hammish-based forward Benatehhor Ёkınojk took control of the ball and ran past two Tae defenders without being challenged before slotting inside Aaron Mor's near post as the 'keeper closed.
Ёkınojk's solo effort spurred the Birgesh on after half time, and the game levelled-out for the second 45. Taeland weren't gifted as much time in midfield and Birgeshir were able to gain possession more frequently to launch attacks forward. Ёkınojk continued his threat and was kept-out by Mor from an angled header towards the bottom corner just before the hour mark. With twenty minutes remaining and with Ra-to-men Mahırojk brought-on upfront, Birgeshir were continuing to push forward, and their approach paid-off. Mahırojk took the ball into the box to lay it back from the bye-line, where Ёkınojk shot but saw the ball rebound off a defender, but midfielder Ætaňur Chanojk was in space to shoot first time into the bottom-left from the edge of the box as Mor had gone to ground expecting to have to save the first effort. Taeland tried to respond by bringing Alex Gomze in to partner Turner, but his addition to the fray had no lasting effect on the momentum of play. Birgeshir managed to snatch a win from Taeland, who were impressive in the opening stages, and will now fancy their chances against Mercury next.
Group standings can be found here...Mercury 2-0 Safiria
29' - M. Fitzgerald
84' - M. Fitzgerald
A brace from Matt Fitzgerald gave the EMU champions a perfect start to the tournament, but not without being tested by the Safirians. A surprise victory over Alexandria started the Mercurians' run to the final last year, and they were hoping to replicate that this time round against newcomers Safiria. Mercury took a while to get going, however, and Safiria registered the first attacks of the game, with Sana-Vriska Ae and Yveltal shooting over and into Kieran Mercury's hands, respectively. Once Mercury had grown into the game, they were hard to stop when in full-flow, and Matt Fitzgerald's first came just before thirty minutes; Joe Foxon's surge forward and subsequent squared pass let Fitzgerald tap in with ease from close. Foxon himself could have turned scorer just before the break, but his dipping effort was just too hard-hit to need any intervention from Kiora Semaði.
While the break bore no significant change to proceedings, Mercury were frustrated by Safiria on a number of occasions. Semaði made two solid saves to deny Joe Foxon and Wilmont Fizeau-Blake throughout the half, while Safiria's front line was unable to keep its efforts on target, having created some opportunities. In the final stages of the game, Mercury secured the win thanks to Fitzgerald's second. Fizeau-Blake found space down the right flank and delivered the ball into the gap between Fitzgerald and Semaði, and the striker's outstretched leg beat the stopper to it, deflecting it over the line and in. While not the most comfortable of wins, Mercury will be proud to have soldiered through, while Safiria-Taeland will be a tasty affair next time with all to play for.

Re: 2014 FMF World Cup - official reports and broadcasts
*Played 5th August*
Austbard 0-3 Tellia
53' - S. Özker
59' - S. Özker
77' - A. Uggè
A second-half blitz from Tellia gave them a win over Austbard, while the score is a harsh reflection of the débutants' performance, which was otherwise solid. The first 45 of this fixture were a slow start indeed, bordering on tedium, with only one shot finding the target all half; Gianluca Salmoiraghi's tame effort being caught by Werner Posen. If anything, Austbard were the aggressors before the break, but were unable to translate their attacks into anything more meaningful than shots wide of the goal.
The second half began a lot more positively for the Tellians, with captain Sezer Özker scoring a double in quick succession before the first 15 were up. Only eight minutes after the restart, Özker was put through after Marko Zajc and Salmoiraghi combined, with the latter finding his skipper just inside the box to power a low shot across Posen and in. Another six minutes on and Özker had doubled his and Tellia's tally, this time from closer range. Zajc found a gap to run through and was one-on-one with Posen before putting a hopeful ball across the face of the goal. Although potentially a shot, Özker was taking no risks and sidefooted high into the net from four yards unchallenged. Tellia made a double swap minutes after going two-up, and Salmoiraghi and Özker were replaced by Armando Uggè and Isaac Mahler. Uggè needed no second invitation to make it three within ten minutes of being introduced, with a smart finish just inside the right post after a swivelled control around Roman Zuzel in defence. Austbard didn't let the onslaught of goals affect them, however, and created a number of chances before the final whistle, being met by some agile keeping from Di Maggio to stop them. While a decent score for the 2012 champions, not the most dominant of performances to match, and Austbard will head into their next game keen to add a finishing touch to what they showed today.
Group standings can be found here...Gerenia 1-1 Hamland
36' - J. Berry
44' - L. Ramos
Holders Hamland opened their defence campaign with a nervy draw that made for an entertaining match. The Hammish side started the stronger of the two teams, with Andrew Miller and Benjamin Craig's lethal partnership continually threatening the Gerenian back quartet, but both sides were well-matched throughout. Prior to the opening goal, Craig had a shot tipped just shy of the post by Jangare, while Gerenia's closest effort came from Copa Apollonia final hero Zelmar Toscano, whose low shot skidded wide. Hamland scored through an unlikely source with ten left before the break, as left-back James Berry broke forward after gaining possession during an attack and squeezed through before slipping the ball between Jangare's legs with a toe-poke as the stopper closed. Gerenia were not to be disheartened and struck back quickly, right before half time. Toscano took charge of a move forward and sprayed the ball out to Edward Toledo, who dinked a cross to the back post where Lisardo Ramos was rushing in to connect with his shin on the stretch. The ball deflected almost directly at Rodney MacLeod but was unable to be saved, being tipped over the line and in instead.
The second half was, on the whole, a very open affair, as both sides took it in turns to formulate attacks and subsequently regroup. Gerenia had a goal chalked-off for offside within the first five minutes, as Mársico broke too soon before finishing around MacLeod. Hamland created the better opportunities to take the lead after that, but Miller's shooting boots weren't on today, with Craig being marked out of the match for the most part, unable to either supply or be supplied often enough. Toscano speculated some longer-range shots which failed to trouble MacLeod's goal, with Mársico having a header palmed over with 15 left. Overall, a fair result for an equal match, but Hamland will have wanted two more points. Gerenia have an opportunity to make their impact bigger against Austbard next.

Re: 2014 FMF World Cup - official reports and broadcasts
*Played 6th August*
North Antarctica 2-2 Indokistan
8' - W. Maynard
21' - Chandra P.R.
38' - I. Kazenaghi
81' - A. Akbar
Indokistan made sure the hosts weren't the first team knocked-out of this year's World Cup with a late goal to snatch an unexpected draw against North Antarctica, as both teams' front duos were on target. The Napians, aiming to get back on their feet after a loss in their opener, started the game with a simple goal which could have been a preview of what was to come if it weren't for the hosts' resilience. William Maynard sliced through the Indokistani defence like butter and put the ball down Iqaba's left side to score within the first ten minutes after his side had dominated from the kick-off. With Andrew Young continuing to be dangerous down his flank immediately after the goal, Indokistan's equaliser came as a shock. After Young was caught-out with a tackle, Tian Abdurahman was unleashed down the right and passed Dreco before delivering a low cross which Chandra Pratama R was able to scruffily deflect in off the front post with a bundled shin past Quentin Markhams. While the scores were level, the run of play wasn't at it seemed only a matter of time before the Napians would have a second, and that's what happened with just over five left. Following Maynard trying to double his account on a few occasions and failing, strike partner Ishmael Kazenaghi was able to use his height to his advantage to rise above marker Rotar Menne and nod the ball into the top-right from Young's accurate corner in.
Little changed in the opening exchanges after half time, with North Antarctica being the primary force in the game and Indokistan looking to hold-on. The hour's passing seemed to kick Indokistan into life, however, and the hosts ended the match strongly, as if they had waiting for the Napians to wear themselves out in frustration. Chandra tested Markhams with a volley - his first shot since the goal, and second all game - and Nabil Ihsan had an effort from distance saved as well. Entering the final ten, the game was poised, and Ali Akbar scored a second leveller after being played through by Chandra, tucking home with an incisive first-time finish with defenders surrounding him. North Antarctica hit back once more, with the desire of three points to be in a positive position with one game to spare, but even Maynard on current form was unable to impact any further and a draw was how it ended. Indokistan will definitely be the happier of the two teams with their first World Cup point earned but the Napians' final match against Elwynn is now a decider, with the hosts still not out of it completely yet.
Group standings can be found here...Craitland 2-1 Elwynn
27' - Y. Miskjalendzki
48' - F. Gaärsen
73' - T. Isrdlvarien
Craitland's second-half comeback saw them seal progression to the quarter-finals after just two matches, overcoming an Elwynn side that is quickly showing their Benacia Cup final run was no fluke. The Elwynnese started reserved but grew into the game with some penetrating counter-attacks, with Peyman Eslamzadeh calling the shots from the centre of the park. Craitland had the first chances of note, as Tim Isrdlvarien struggled to control a cross from Tiem P. Jones and headed over before Hänä Zensen had a shot deflected away at the edge of the area. However, it was Elwynn who sneaked ahead; another counter saw Dånjal ut ur Aldin exploit the gap behind Daniel Hjansen and a chipped cross was well-placed enough for Yngvi Miskjalendzki to jump in ahead of Kraig Johansen and head through the flapping stopper's hands midway through the first half. Going ahead gave Elwynn more confidence and they finished the half with a good period of possession football, culminating with a wild shot over the bar by scorer Miskjalendzki.
Craitland made an impact on the score straight after the game got back underway, negating the Elwynnese score through Freddie Gaärsen's second of the tournament. Hänä Zensen took the ball forward after the kick-off and picked-out his domestic teammate's run with a cutting lob for Gaärsen to stretch-out a volley and direct the ball past Öldrikkari, who seemed caught-out having to deal with an attack so soon. The Craits began to intimidate more after getting on the score sheet, and Elwynn once more sat back waiting for a chance to break, but Craitland kept the ball well. Zensen and Dermäna's combo in midfield set-up a few wing-based offences, but Jan Mikelt and Jones couldn't create anything until there were twenty minutes left. Mikelt was set free by Zensen, rounding Johanns Raun Oðð, and delivered a straight ball into the middle of the danger zone, where Tim Isrdlvarien had the momentum to beat Madani to it and find the bottom corner with his forehead. While Razdjani Emiri was stopped by Johansen with his attempt to drag Elwynn back into it near the end, the Craits equally had a potential third kept out by Öldrikkari's reflexes. The first meeting between these two nations spawned an interesting fixture; Craitland now know they've gone through by need something against Indokistan next to top the group, while Elwynn will join them in advancing with anything other than a loss against the Napians.
