Foxon: We were lucky to win it
Mercury captain Joe Foxon has criticised his side's performance against semi-final opponents Senya, despite reaching their second FMF World Cup final in as many years.

Mercury captain Joe Foxon has criticised his side's performance against semi-final opponents Senya, despite reaching their second FMF World Cup final in as many years.
Foxon press conference:
Reporter: Hello Joe, can we have a few words?
Foxon: Yeah sure
Reporter: You've reached your second semi-final, so you must be pretty happy with your performance
Foxon: It's not the performance I'm happy with. Obviously I'm delighted we made the final, but there's a bit of disappointment there that we made it so difficult for ourselves.
Reporter: Is there a particular incident that you feel made it more difficult?
Foxon: Well just the game as a whole, we didn't show them the respect they deserve and they made us pay. They worked us very hard and we were lucky to win it.
Reporter: You got the winning goal, is that a special feeling?
Foxon: It's always nice to get a goal, especially one that means you reach the final, but again, the performance just wasn't at the right standard today, so there's a tinge of disappointment.
Reporter: Stephen Charlton got a yellow card, do you think it was a booking?
Foxon: Well yeah, it was a foul. I wish you guys would stop trying to get us in trouble!
Reporter: *laughs* Ok, thanks Joe! Good luck in the final!
Foxon: Thanks
Re: 2014 FMF World Cup - official reports and broadcasts
Very dissapointed with that. Didn't expect to get to the semi-finals, but to concede so late after playing so well for so long is always a little disappointing. At least, now we can aim for Third Place. Craitland are a top team though, so it'll be difficult, but after putting out Tellia, we can beat anyone. Y'all better start taking us seriously now! :p

I hope you don't host it next year or you might win it before we do!

*Played 22nd August*
Craitland 3-1 Senya
29' - F. Gaärsen
34' - T. Isrdlvarien
40' - A. Danetskë (pen.)
45' - H. Zensen
Senya's first ever World Cup appearance ended in a defeat to four-time champions Craitland in a third-place play-off that tried its best to boost the tournament's goals-per-game average. A quick spell of four goals at the back end of the first half compacted all the important action in the match, but the remainder was not short of highlights either. After both narrowly losing their respective semi-finals 1-0 - Senya's defeat coming agonisingly in the final minute of extra time - the two teams went full strength with the desire of going home off the back of a win for pride. Senya started brightly, with the pace of Barnaby Hands and Ƨinkœ Zvet causing a number of problems to the Craitish back line. Hands himself was unfortunate to be called offside on a break through, from which he converted past Kraig Johansen with a neat flick, while Alesandrœ Danetskë forced the stopper into a low save within the first ten minutes. While Craitland weathered the storm, they took the lead just before half an hour was up, with Freddie Gaärsen grabbing his fourth of the tournament. Tiem P. Jones' run inside wasn't tracked, and his ball in across the face of goal was met by Gaärsen at the far post to blast home from close range. Within five minutes, before the Senyans could regain composure to attack again, Craitland had found a second, with Tim Isrdlvarien's third of the summer. Gaärsen received the ball and risked a shot from distance, but a fingertip save from Sileman Bɏankarlënœ deflected it onto the post, and the rebound created an easy finish for Isrdlvarien as he was following-up on the right. The Craits' two-goal lead lasted just around another five minutes, after which it was halved from the spot. A flowing Senyan move was abruptly halted with an Olivier Dermäna accidental handball from Mena's cross. The midfielder was booked, and Danetskë rolled the ball into the middle of the goal as Johansen dived to his right. However, the half's excitement was still not done, with a fourth strike finding the net in injury time before the break. Jones again recorded an assist with an injection of pace inside before an accurate lay-off to Hänä Zensen was met with a quality shot from his club teammate. From just beside the "D", Zensen launched a powerful effort that curved its way through the air and into the slightest of spaces between the 'keeper and his left-hand post with effectively the last kick of the first 45.
As the second half began and progressed, it became clear that the game's most interesting parts were the few before the break. Senya, off the back of two consecutive extra time appearances in their pair of knock-out matches, were unable to reproduce the fast-paced attacks that graced the first half, while the Craits seemed comfortable with settling on their lead of two goals. The half wasn't devoid of talking points, however, as Gaärsen had a speculative looping header land on the roof of the net, substitute Ĵulian Ólsen broke through but finished poorly the wrong side of the post, and Senyan scorer Danetskë had to be tackled at the last second on more than one occasion thanks to some cutting through balls. In the end, there was nothing either side could produce to affect the scoreline laid down at half time, and Craitland sealed a first third place since 2009, with the Senyans placing a very credible fourth on their World Cup début.

Kasëana: "Couldn't be prouder"
Despite falling 3-1 to Craitland in the Third Place Play-off, Senyan coach Ëker Kasëana said that he couldn't be prouder of a team that before the tournament, many people were tipping to not even escape the group phase.
"You go into the World Cup as a debutant and you're first job is to try and make yourselves look respectable. We've played six world class teams and more than matched all of them. On another day, we could have been at the World Cup final, but that's football. The lads have been working really well together in training, and they've responded to the criticism of the press in the right way."
Senya were heavily criticised by their domestic media and fans for not reaching the Copa Apollonia final. Čerder Vosin was dropped after that tournament, and many felt that without him, Senya would have struggled at the World Cup.
"We made some changes, but it just seemed to spur the boys on. To have knocked out Interland and Zandarijn after just two games was a great feeling. And when you knock-out Tellia, you even start to think, hey, this might even be our year. But of course, to lose like we did to Mercury hurt a lot, and I think that affected us going into the Craitland game. But I think we've learnt from that experience and now we can go home with our heads held high and start planning for next year. I couldn't be prouder of the lads, the team, and most importantly, what we've achieved here at this tournament. No doubt, the fans will be confident of us again, and in the future, we can bring success back to Senya."

I believe Joe has done it two times this year... with his comments had put some pressure over the referees LOL
Congratz Mercury on their first World Cup!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And I want to publicly thank the FMF staff for giving us a wonderful World Cup!
Expect to see major changes in Hamland for next competitions! Altough we leave the WC without losing in the regular time -and even the perfomance was higher than expected- it seems that there are some players that arrived to the end in their National Team career.
OOC: On a side note, two times the same this year: both Argentina and Hamland got to the final and did not bring the cup home

Hamland's Scott Player of the Tournament
Hammish attacking midfielder Jules Scott has been awarded the Golden Ball for the 2014 World Cup, signifying his position as the tournament's official best player.
While Hamland managed to finish as runners-up, their overall performance was criticised, but Scott was a shining light for the side. His goal against Alexandria decided the side's quarter-final, and he opened the scoring in the final; converting his shoot-out penalty to boot. Scott's award may raise a few eyebrows, however, as he is generally a reserved and effective player, and not a stand-out star like some other player who played this summer.
Regardless, that shouldn't take away from his tournament, and the FMF wishes its congratulations to Jules!
