Resource Map
I know we've discussed this before and won't change it, but still ...
I noticed a new symbol not on the key. The Matbaa island just under the old Jasonian ones. Has Bread, apple, cheese, and possibly a lettuce.
Adds to the list of the Planks of Wood (near Alexandria on Tapfer), the Flying Fish of old Lovely (now under Matbaa's Rowena colony), Shireroth's Whale (under Kildare) and the mysterious missing Paper.
Gotta love the MCS resource map ...
Babkha does at least have two salt mines

oh...
I found the old resources map the other day
it turns out Ryan removed a lot of the unrealistic resources and put tonnes of the normal ones on there

Those are awesome pictures, did he make them all himself, or get them from somewhere?

Twas I who made the first research map, not Ryan, and I still strongly believe it's much better than the current version. The current version has crappy pictures in lots of different contrasting styles, but more importantly, it just throws lots of resources everywhere indiscriminately. There's no sense of each country and territory having a couple important, culturally/geographically appropriate resources to exploit - he just sort of vomited them all over the map.
To answer your question, I think I got most of them from various computer game scenarios.

Sorry Andreas I never saw that post there, I said Ryan removed and added, i.e. he didn't make it, he edited it...
@Scott: I like how yours has a lot less resources, making it more of an aim to get resources, but some things like Shipbuilding, Paper, high tech manufacturing, heavy industry, weaponry could really happen anywhere as they are more national things rather than things that can happen on their own...
It makes sort of sense for Ryan to remove them for that reason but the fact that he removed whales and left heavy industry confuses me slightly.
Also scott, what is the flying swordfish thing because even on the original maps it's just denoted by "?????" and it's always on land, often far from the sea or in the icecaps
EDIT: actually Ryan added heavy industry...

Well, the original aim for the resource map was to show where things were, for a purpose like war or something. So "shipbuilding" showed where the major shipbuilding industries of the time were. It's true that anywhere potentially COULD make ships, but only certain areas actually have it as a major industry. Like, you could make cars anywhere, but Detroit's the place where the actual car factories are and where they actually get produced. Whoever controls the shipbuilding areas can logically say that they have large navies. Nowadays you're probably right that this isn't necessary.
That's...a swordfish? I found that in the same place I found some of the other resource icons and couldn't figure out what it was. I stuck it on the map in case someone wanted to have fun with it. A legend grew up that it was some sort of Micron Power Node that granted magic to the owner, but that explanation was never officially endorsed.
...looking at it, I still don't see it as a swordfish. Are you sure?

we call it a flying swordfish because that's what it's been known as for about a year now
so I guess the year before that it was a power node...
the resource map needs really, to be more similar to the first one but with resources that exist without nations kind of thing
and the icons might well be copyrighted by some company...
but changing the resource map has always been "un-editable" to anyone (except Ryan apparently)

Oh, it's too late to change it now, we've built too much of our culture around it. But what I heard was that the swordfish was there for Lovely for some reason ...

Or Lovely linked it to themselves ....
Scott, no offence, but your map would no longer work with the current MCS, merely because nations tend to claim (well, only be approved, that is) much smaller land than they used to get ... so under your map, many nations would be without any resources ...

If Bill and I would ever get our act together, you actually get to visit that place and learn some magic. It's named the Apollo Cavern now. We moved it from the south poll into Tapfer because we didn't want to have create that much of the world map, but the concept is still there, 7-8 years later.Scott Alexander wrote:That's...a swordfish? ... I will neither confirm nor deny the fact I'm hovering around Micronations still.
