Introducing the FMF Elo Micras Rankings!
Introducing the FMF Elo Micras Rankings!
In the past, the FMF has used a variety of ranking systems to determine seedings for various competitions, however none really ever stuck for the last couple of years, we have not had a ranking system and seeding has often been vague. As a result, we need a ranking system that works, is fair and can be relied upon.
Introducing the FMF Elo Micras Rankings!
The FMF Elo Micras Rankings are based on the Elo ranking system that is used in a variety of sports, most notably in chess. Some of you may be familiar with the real life World Football Elo Rankings, and the new Micras rankings will use the exact same methodology, allowing you to compare your nation to real nations in terms of prowess.
I have been cooking these rankings up for the past few weeks with various tests to ensure that the system works, and I have now begun the arduous task of recording all the rankings and results in FMF history, so that we will have a suitable rankings to be released.
How will the new rankings work?
The results take into account margin of victory, status of the match, the expected result and the ability of the opponent. This means that a 1-0 win over Craitland in a World Cup game will likely earn you more points than if you defeat Incontinentia 10-0 in a friendly, which means that you can't just rise up the rankings by playing a load of weak nations in friendlies, thus ensuring the rankings are fair and representative.
The new rankings will be released three times a year. The first will be ahead of the qualifying rounds and will be used to seed the qualification rounds of the FMF World Cup and the various regional competitions. The second release will be after the completion of qualification, and will be possibly used to determine the seeding for the FMF World Cup finals tournament and the finals tournaments of the various regional competitions. The final release will be after the completion of the summer major tournaments.
However, the ratings will be constantly updated throughout the year on the database, and the database will be available for public viewing upon its completion.
It is important to notice that I have only just started on the mission of adding all of the results to the database and this will take me some time to complete, however I hope to do so by two weeks time (25 August) at the very latest. In the meantime, as I go, I will update the wiki sandbox with records as I come across them, including the ranking leaders, the biggest upsets (in terms of points exchanged) and the top 20 ranked after the completion of the World Cups each summer (along with the 2016 continental finals).
Note: It is important to note that when a team plays a match for the first time, they are assigned a provisional rating based on the score and opponent in their opening match, to a round 100. This may mean that some early rankings of a team may be slightly skewed, and as such the ranking of any team that has played less than 20 games should be considered as provisional.

Re: Introducing the FMF Elo Micras Rankings!
Thanks!
We're hoping to release the rankings three times a year, one before qualifying (to use for seeding), one after qualifying, and one after the World Cup/Confederational tournaments
