Re: Lucerne v North Antarctica (09/03)
North Antarctica's preparation for their second World Cup finals began with a trip to neighbours Lucerne, who narrowly missed out on qualification due to Birgeshir's superior points difference. The home side kicked off the first half, with Scott Lawson collecting the spiralling high ball to begin North Antarctica's first possession. The visitors were awarded the first penalty, when Peter Milios was caught high by Martin Fairweather, allowing them to move within 20 metres of Lucerne's line, but a handling error from Samuel Krow got the hosts out of jail early on. Next time North Antarctica got a sniff of the line, Eric Drew was able to convert it into four points, with Ryan Rodriguez hitting the post with the conversion attempt. North Antarctica doubled their lead within five minutes of opening the scoring, Samuel Krow making amends for his earlier mistake, with Rodriguez adding the goal this time. Just as the game looked like it might be getting away from the home team, Hammond Ravens’ Sullivan Rochester darted past three defending players to pull a score back for Lucerne, Paul Hardwick slotting over the conversion. North Antarctica added a penalty goal to increase the lead back to a converted try, but Scott Lawson misread the kickoff and allowed it to bounce dead, giving Lucerne a goal line drop-out. Lucerne still didn’t make it within 20 metres of the Napian line thanks to some strong defence, so Pete Dixon kicked a drop goal to close the deficit to just 5 points. Lucerne were still slow out of the blocks on the attack, but their kicking game almost matched that of the top sides, and a 40/20 gave them a fantastic opportunity to take the lead shortly before half time, but James Kimberley was judged to have been held up on the fourth tackle, and with just seconds remaining, Paul Dixon stepped up to the plate again with another single to put his side just 4 behind at the break.
Lucerne received the kick-off in the second half, and hoped to create a territorial advantage from the outset, but Dominic Stroud’s fumble gifted the Napians possession 30 metres out, a gift they took full advantage of, stretching the lead to 8 points, with Rodriguez missing the kick from the touchline. Lucerne again managed to close the gap, with Hardwick converting his own try to put them just two points behind. North Antarctica conceded a penalty for offside on Lucerne’s next set, and Hardwick put the goal over to level the scores, before kicking his first drop goal of the night to give Lucerne the lead for the first time. North Antarctica were awarded a penalty, and retook the lead through Rodriguez’s boot, but Lucerne’s kicking game again helped them out of a hole, with a second 40/20 of the game gifting them excellent field position, but again North Antarctica’s defence was too strong, and with no penalties forthcoming, the drop goal was again taken by Paul Dixon, claiming an unprecedented hat trick. The game looked to be settled, but a quick break from Azzis Mekklebburg put the Napians into Lucerne’s half of the field, and they were able to continue to turn the screw, scoring in the corner with Mekklebburg finishing the move that he started. Rodriguez added the goal, forcing Lucerne to take a short kick off, which West Connelly headed into touch. His grin soon turned to a look of horror as a penalty was awarded, but with just seconds left, Lucerne’s Hail Mary kick-play was unsuccessful, and North Antarctica got their World Cup preparation off to a winning start.
