Mercury v North Antarctica (13/03)
Mercury will use the same starting 13 from their World Cup squad, as they aim to begin their season on winning ways against North Antarctica. The Napians come to this game off the back of defeating Lucerne, and will hope to begin the World Cup on a winning run, having narrowly missed out on the semi-finals last year.

Re: Mercury v North Antarctica (13/03)
World Cup runners-up Mercury kicked off 2013 against North Antarctica, who narrowly missed out on a semi-final meeting with Mercury in last year’s World Cup. Neither side made any changes to their first 13 players named in the World Cup squad. Robert Cooper kicked off the match, giving Scott Lawson the first carry of the game, bringing the ball into play from his own in goal. The first sets were a battle for territory, which neither side wanted to surrender, but North Antarctica drew first blood, as Mercury were caught out with a penalty for a ball steal allowing Ryan Rodriguez put his side into an early lead with the goal. North Antarctica thought they'd extended their lead, but video referee Jamie Crookes disallowed it for an earlier knock on. It was Mercury that touched down first, with Daniel Brown sneaking into the corner, Robert Cooper impressively managing to convert. They extended their lead soon after, Steve Evans beating Eric Drew to a high ball, before going in to the right of the posts, giving Cooper and easy kick to make it 12-2. The visitors were able to break the defence of Mercury, to move back within four points, thanks to Fletcher Smith’s converted try, but both sides managed to hold out until half time, keeping the score at 12-8.
Mercury almost made it 16-8, but a miraculous tackle from Austin Coyle won his side a 20 metre restart as Daniel Brown was forced into touch in-goal. North Antarctica won some good ground, but looked on helpless, as Brown intercepted West Connely’s pass before running 60 metres to touch down for Mercury, with Cooper easily kicking the goal from in front of the posts. A second try in quick succession looked to have left North Antarctica out of reach, but a cunning short kick-off left the Mercurian side scrambling, and the visitors were able to regain possession. Peter Milios went in for the away side, but Rodriguez failed to convert, meaning his team had to score three times. They were once again denied by the video referee, when Climax Wilson was judged to have obstructed Stanley Washington, although Washington’s reaction earned him a 10 minute break in the sin bin. The man advantage allowed North Antarctica space to run, and they managed to force another set, when Thomas Ware batted the ball dead to deny Samuel Krow a try. This time, the Napians managed to score under the posts. Washington returned to the field, shortly after the try, and almost got himself in trouble again with a high tackle on Michael Thompson giving North Antarctica good field position, but they were unable to capitalise, with Krow knocking on 5 metres from the line. Mercury’s set plays managed to get them upfield quickly, and they won a goal line drop-out thanks to a lucky bounce catching out Scott Lawson in his own in-goal. Mercury restored their 12-point advantage with just 5 minutes to go, with Daniel Brown rounding off his hat-trick for the final score of the game.
