Proposal: A unified currency for Micras
Proposal: A unified currency for Micras
To facilitate international trade on Micras, I propose that all the nations' currencies be unified into one: the micra.
Exchange rates tbd. (The provisional rate is 1 micra = 1 Hammish obol, subject to change.)

Re: Proposal: A unified currency for Micras
I staunchly oppose a unified currency. What's the real point? Hell it's hard enough to keep people interested in things as it is, you make it so streamlined no one has to think and where's the fun of ForEx?
And even more than that, what's the cost in individual identity? My favorite part of micronationalism is being able to invent my own little cultural aspects. If I had any ability to design things I'd have images and such out the wazoo, currency among them. I don't like the idea of losing authority over aspects of my culture. It's like saying 'to facilitate foreign diplomacy we should have an international government model so that I always know what I'm getting into no matter what country I go to on micras.'

Re: Proposal: A unified currency for Micras
If you're interested in a unified currency for normal economic transactions, I suggest you join the Small Commonwealth and sign up for the Small Commonwealth Unified Currency. Quite a few of the big names in Micras are already members, or have expressed considerable interest.CJ Miller wrote:To facilitate international trade on Micras, I propose that all the nations' currencies be unified into one: the micra.

If you're interested in a unified currency for the purposes of simulating international trade, the MITO system already provides Trade Credits as a currency that can be used for all resource trading.
And Ailin - in the SCUE, you're allowed to name the currency whatever you want

Not that it's too bad an idea but what about new nations joining? Would they be forced into adopting the unified currency? Who would enforce the changes anyway, because MITO doesn't cover all Micrasian nations?

New member where? In the Small Commonwealth? The unified economy treaty is entirely voluntary. Livlandia, for example, is only a member of the Small Commonwealth, nothing more.

If that was in response to my comment; new nations on Micras. I didn't involve the SC in what I said because this is an idea for the whole of Micras...Malliki Tosha wrote:New member where?

I have to admit, I would oppose this as well. Its the same as introducing the Euro to the united Kingdom which I oppose anyway. Individual currencies are the way forward
Re: Proposal: A unified currency for Micras
If you can call the SCUC whatever you want, what's the point of the SCUC? Just deal with your buddies without an exchange rate.

The point of the SCUC is exactly that - to let us deal with our buddies without an exchange rate. Since the Small Commonwealth bank is fully automated, everyone and anyone can transfer their funds to anyone within their own nation or elsewhere in the SCUE.King Ailin of Uantir wrote:If you can call the SCUC whatever you want, what's the point of the SCUC? The fact that any nation can refer to the actual currency by whatever name they choose is so that they can continue to use their previous names for their currency. Non-interference is a big part of the Small Commonwealth, you see; we do not want to give any illusions of strangling cultural development or anything of the like. Thus the concept of the SCUC as a medium currency between all nations that replaces none of them. In practicality, the banking system doesn't care what you call it - it's all just numbers to to the bank. But it makes people happy and comfortable to be able to use their old names for their currencies and pictures of the bills and all those nice things you brought up earlier about liking to design and so we see no reason to impose.
The SCUE is the closest thing I have ever seen to a Micras-unified currency in my entire time in the hobby. If anyone is interested in wanting to join up, it's easy. Take a look around http://shireroth.org/forum/viewforum.php?f=196 . All you need do is join the Small Commonwealth itself (which, and I stress, does not involve you giving up the slightest bit of sovereignty to anyone else at all but merely establishes the framework for being able to discuss treaties and other internal business) and then sign the Small Commonwealth Unified Currency Treaty. If there are any questions or worries about what all this means, I, as Secondus and acting Primate of the Small Commonwealth, am at your disposal.

I hear that you have to pay 10% of your national holdings per year to Shireroth?

Hah hah, no. All the commonwealth members know that it's hosted on Shireroth's forum out of convenience - the only person I've met who seemed to seriously expouse the idea that the commonwealth was controlled by Shireroth was Matt Kovac.Guido Zambelis wrote:I hear that you have to pay 10% of your national holdings per year to Shireroth?
Besides, Gralus is the richest nation at the moment ...
