Treaty Discussions
Interland has requested a treaty discussion. Antica is willing to listen, but reserves the right to continue hostilities if the discussion is deemed to go against our interests.

Re: Treaty Discussions
My first offer is a condominium. An island with a joint government, and probably with a cooperation on technological and economical fields.

Re: Treaty Discussions
The position of the Antican government hasn't changed. We want the island, so a condominium is out of the question.

Re: Treaty Discussions
The most we are willing to give is the whole control over island, but preserving a part of the culture we (well, I) developed and not using it as a military base for a period of six months.
I would ask for a reconsideration of the condominium first. You don't want to have enemies everywhere, do you?

Re: Treaty Discussions
We would be more than happy to accept full control of the island. The condominium is simply not good enough.

Re: Treaty Discussions
I see no problems with the culture thing or the DMZ thing. So, deal (subject to ratification by the Antican assembly)?

Re: Treaty Discussions
I'm not good at writing the treaties, as what I know tends to be a chaotic mix of formal and informal register... Will you be that nice and prepare one to look through and possibly accept?

Re: Treaty Discussions
In the interests of fairness, and considering Antica's poor record in dealing with Pawel's English, the Judges will look over the Treaty to make sure it does not compromise either side's positions as stated in this thread.

That should perhaps be my poor judgement, but I understand. I'll draft something tomorrow hopefully and post it here so you can check it out and such.

Re: Treaty Discussions
This is a very rough draft. I think I got the gist of it, but the language needs improvement, and some of the articles need clarification.
Treaty of Peace and Recognition between the Antican Republic and the Republic of Interland
ARTICLE 1
In the interest of mutual peace and friendship, there shall exist a perpetual state of peace between the Antican Republic and the Republic of Interland, hereafter referred to as the Parties.
ARTICLE 2
The Republic of Interland agrees to cede complete control over the island of Montauk to the Antican Republic.
ARTICLE 3
The Antican Republic commits to respect the indigenous culture of Montauk, insofar as it is compatible with the general theme and culture of the Antican Republic.
ARTICLE 4
The Parties undertake to settle any international disputes between them by peaceful means in such a manner that their peace and security and justice are not endangered.
ARTICLE 5
The Parties will consult together from time to time regarding the implementation of this Treaty, and, at the request of either Party, whenever the security of either Party or international peace and security on Micras is threatened. If in the case of aggressive action undertaken by either Party, the two Parties shall not have mutually agreed in previous consultation to undertake such action, the other Party shall not be obligated to provide any assistance.
ARTICLE 6
Each Party recognizes that any armed attack against the other Party would constitute an act of war, and commits to refraining from such actions.
ARTICLE 7
In the case of an armed attack commited by the Antican Republic against the Republic of Interland, sovereignty over the island of Montauk shall immediately revert back to Interland. In the case of an armed attack commited by the Republic of Interland against the Antican Republic, this Treaty shall be null and void, and sovereignty over the island of Montauk shall continue to belong to the Antican Republic.
ARTICLE 8
Both Parties recognize each other's territorial claims and sovereignty.
ARTICLE 9
This Treaty shall be ratified by the Antican Republic and the Republic of Interland in accordance with their respective constitutional processes and will enter into force on the date on which both Parties shall have ratified it.
ARTICLE 10
This Treaty shall be in force indefinitely until terminated in accordance with its provisions. At any time after the ratification of this Treaty by both Parties, either Party may give notice to the other Party of its intention to terminate the Treaty, in which case the Treaty shall terminate one month after such notice has been given. Termination by the Antican Republic will automatically retrocede the island of Montauk to the Republic of Interland. Termination by the Republic of Interland will void the duty of the Antican Republic to respect this Treaty, while sovereignty over the island of Montauk will remain with the Antican Republic.
ARTICLE 11
Nothing in this Treaty shall be construed to deny the right of either Party to request renegotiation or amendment of all or part of the Articles herein. Any amendment shall be subject to the agreement and ratification of both Parties.

Re: Treaty Discussions
At least I know about the grammatical structures used, but this seems like an attempt at a Napoleonic-style Treaty - "to write in such a way, that nobody will want to interpret".

Re: Treaty Discussions
So you think we should leave it open to interpretation? Shouldn't it be in your best interest to not do that?

Re: Treaty Discussions
No, but I believe the thoughts of the Treaty can be expressed in less complicated synonyms.
